Nedlands Community Care

About Nedlands Community CareThe City provides a range of services for eligible seniors in the community and younger people with a disability and their carers, who live at home.

Nedlands Community Care (NCC) provides social support within a wellness framework, assisting individuals to maintain and explore social links and community activities. Being part of the social community plays an important part in maintaining a sense of individual wellbeing.

The primary role of Nedlands Community Care is to support residents to live

independently for as long as possible, preserving quality of life and preventing inappropriate admission to long-term care.

A supportive group of volunteers provides assistance with transport, visits to the shops and library and one-to-one social visits.

Home-based care includes assistance with personal care, social support, light domestic assistance, meal preparation, light gardening maintenance, shopping and bill paying and Waratah Club activities.

OUT ‘N’ ABOUT January - March 2017

Social support activities include Out’ n’ About tours, Dinner Club, Friday social evenings, Saturday social outings, Take off Tuesdays, book clubs and computer classes.

If you or someone you know would like more information about these services, contact the friendly staff at Nedlands Community Care.

Alternatively you can contact the WA Regional Assessment Service on 1300 785 415.

Information is also available online at myagedcare.gov.au.

To discuss your needs further or to make an appointment with an NCC staff member call 9386 6170 or drop into the centre at 97 Waratah Avenue, Dalkeith.

You must be a resident of the City of Nedlands and a client of NCC in order to attend the Out ‘n’ About tours and activities. If you know someone who would like to join the social support program and they are not a client of NCC, please ask them to contact us for further information. They will need to be assessed for eligibility.

Please note that outings are designed for more physically active clients.

Is transport included? The bus will collect you from your home for all outings except book clubs, dinner club and computer classes.

Times of the events are approximate and vary according to the distance the driver has to go to pick up the clients. We will call you before the event to confirm your attendance and again a day before with your pick up time.

How do I book? Please call the NCC office on 9386 6170 to book your place as soon as possible. We often have a waiting list for these events so if you need to cancel, please provide us with as much notice as possible so that we can arrange for someone else to attend. In some instances, last minute cancellations may incur a cancellation fee. If this fee is applicable, it will be outlined specifically for each outing.

What about payment?Payment can generally be made on the day of the event. Please try to have the exact money as we may not have change available. Please note that transport fees are $8.00 per trip.

Should I bring anything? You may wish to bring a bottle of water and a cushion for your comfort, especially on a long drive. Please let us know if you have any special needs so as we can make suitable arrangements. Special needs could be dietary requirements, walking frame etc.

Who can attend?

What about the weather? In summer we suggest that you bring a bottle of water and wear light clothing. Sun screen is also advisable. In winter it is a good precaution to carry a small umbrella and a jacket or warm jumper.

CancellationsWe may have to cancel outings for various reasons, however we do endeavour to reschedule these outings whenever possible.

Where clients cancel bookings with short notice, a cancellation fee may be charged.

OUT ‘N’ ABOUT January - March 2017

Movies at the Old Village - a bit of local historyLocal residents will remember the Village Cinema at 95 Waratah Ave (it was later renamed ‘The Revue’).The building at 95 Waratah Ave held 300-400 people, and was operated in conjunction with the Gardens at 81 Waratah from 1954. In 1968 the cinema at number 95 was completely refurbished and r e - o p e n e d a s t h e V i l l a g e Continental Cinema, one of the Ace circuit.

Now able to hold 688 people, it was described in the Film Weekly in 1968 as the first of Perth’s new and intimate suburban houses with plush carpeting, air-conditioning, staggered seating to allow for more leg room and plush curtaining. It was still an Ace Theatre in the 80s but following the post-television depression in the industry, was sub-let to various independent operators. By the 90s, it was closed intermittently before being sold to a local supermarket in 1994, but films were still presented for some time. The cinema was closed while plans were drawn up, first to turn it into a triple cinema, including putting a new cinema on the roof, then to turn it into a twin cinema. This finally opened on 21 November 1996, as a twin cinema but at first with only one screen in operation. It was known as the Revue, and by 1999 both screens were in operation. In 2001 it was reported that the Revue Twin would longer function as a cinema, but would re-open as a warehouse selling furniture and bric-a-brac. Cinema 1 had all the seats removed, but the screens and projectors were to remain. The building is now used by the C3 Church who kindly allows Nedlands Community Care the exclusive use once a month. So join us on the first Wednesday of each month for one of cinema’s ‘Golden Greats’. Morning tea is provided before the movie and a light lunch after for just $15.00. Call NCC to book.

Thank you to the AMMPT (Australian Museum of Motion Picture & Television Inc.) for the information and photographs we have used here and over the page.
