Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

Veni, Sancte Spiritus! - Come, Holy Spirit, come!

These words begin the Pentecost Sequence. Not many feasts insert a solemn sequence between the second reading and the gospel. Pentecost Day is one of three most im-portant feasts in our faith beside Easter and Christmas, a day when the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus’ disciples. It happened on the Jewish Feast of Harvest celebrat-ed fifty days after Passover. Name of this Jewish feast – Pentecost – is known to us from Greek translation, and it reflects number of days (Greek: pentecostē - “50th day”).

For us Christians, this is a beginning, this is a day when the Church was born. We are a Church when we give testimony to the Risen Lord – in our words, in actions, in celebration. We are a Church when we are on a mission. What is a mission of the Pentecost 2020? Reopening? – yes. Healing? – yes. Praying? – yes. Vigilance? – yes. Prudence? – yes. Serving? – yes. Courage? – yes. Can we do this and many more without Holy Spirit? Probably not as much as with His Power.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus! - Come, Holy Spirit, come!

As I write this letter on Tuesday, so far 70 parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago (from 340 in total) were certified for the Re-opening Phase 1. At OLMC, we are working on it, and it’s quite possible that by the weekend of this bulletin we will also be certified. Phase 1 seems very limited – celebration of Baptism, Marriage, Funeral, and Confession of up to 10 people at the church not counting those who minister. But, this will be a lesson for us to prepare in the best way for the Phase 2. I’m glad that we formed a Leadership Team – Terri Kaisling, our Parish Nurse, Theresa Flynn, and a pastor, we have captains, and volunteers for greeting, disinfecting, and set-up, but we still are looking for more people. It would be easier to be on a rotation, we all have other duties and things to do. If you feel strong enough, and healthy enough, please join the crew. Veni, Sancte Spiritus! - Come, Holy Spirit, come!

This Monday is the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. When the Church was born, the Mother was there, and Blessed Mary is still with the Mystical Body of Christ, assisting with her intercessions and being the great example of faith. We cancelled all arrangements for the Parish Feast, but as soon as possible in the wisdom of the Holy Spirit we will do it in full splendor. Happy Feast Day to all are gathered under the name of Our La-dy, Mother of the Church!

May God bless you,

Father Andrew

Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement

We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we be-lieve that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, com-forts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist,

the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of

Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace...

♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the per-secuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved…

♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Spiritual Communion Prayer My Jesus,

I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament, I love you above all things,

and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive

you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there

and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits

who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Praying the Rosary

You can pray the Rosary and/or the Living Rosary. Our Rosary intention this week is for all the people of this parish as the Monday after Pentecost

is the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church. Lori G., John I., Evelyn K., Terri K., Gilda M., Mary M., Ted M., Josephine N.,

Emilie P., Stefania P., Jean R., Shirley S., and Milabelle T. pray at least one Rosary for the weekly intention.

Another way of praying the Rosary is to pray one decade of the Rosary daily for the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and in honor of the patron of this Living Rosary, Saint Philomena. Ted M., Barb R., Josephine N., Karen R., and Mary M. each pray one of

the Joyful Mysteries, and Barb R. and Mary M. each pray one of the first two Luminous Mysteries. We have been blessed to be a part of a parish named after Mary, and as this month of Our Lady comes to

an end, please give our Blessed Mother the gift of praying a Rosary and/or a Living Rosary, and email [email protected]

The liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church—previously celebrated in Poland and Argentina—has been extended to the universal Church. Pope Francis inserts the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, into the Roman Calendar on the Monday following Pentecost Sunday. “She became the tender Mother of the Church which Christ begot on the cross, handing on the Spirit,” the decree said. “Christ, in turn, in the beloved disciple, chose all disciples as ministers of his love towards his Mother, entrusting her to them so that they might welcome her with filial affection.” In 1964, at the close of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), Blessed Pope Paul VI formally declared Mary as the “Mother of the Church,” and invited Catholics to invoke Mary’s help under that title. During the jubilee year of 1975, the Vatican produced a special Mass, called a “votive Mass,” for Mary under the title of Beata Maria Ecclesiæ Matre, or “Blessed Mary Mother of the Church,” and also approved inserting the title into various prayers in hon-or of Mary. With the new decree, devotion to Mary as Mother of the Church now becomes an approved feast for the universal Church. “Having attentively considered how greatly the promotion of this devotion might encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety, Pope Francis has decreed that the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, should be inscribed in the Roman Calendar on the Monday after Pentecost and be now celebrated every year,” the document said. “This celebration will help us to remember that growth in the Christian life must be anchored to the Mystery of the Cross, to the oblation of Christ in the Eucharistic Banquet and to the Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the Redeemed, the Virgin who makes her offering to God,” it said. The decree stipulated that the feast should appear in all calendars and liturgical books.
