The McLennan Community College Foundation promotes quality higher education that
enriches the academic, economic and cultural life of our
diverse community.
To further this mission, the Foundation acquires financial
resources and strengthens support to fund scholarships,
professional development and capital improvements for the
students, faculty and staff of the College and the broader communities it serves.
In so doing, the Foundation hopes to enhance quality of life, encourage success and
positively change the futures of students and their families.
A Year for Lending a HandAs we know all too well, 2020 brought extraordinary challenges to each of
us individually and to our society as a whole. Students seeking a better life through higher education faced crippling economic obstacles as their jobs evaporated and their futures became uncertain. Basic needs like rent, utilities, and food were left in limbo, while college courses pivoted to online, bringing the problem of technology access front and center.
In this report, we are proud to recap how the MCC Foundation faced the uncertainty and continued to provide opportunity to students who persevered. Rather than give up in the face of the pandemic, we redoubled our efforts to stay in touch with our supporters, raised additional money to assist our students, and continued to build scholarship endowments to

encourage the long-term sustainability of the Foundation. Despite the social and economic wreckage caused by the coronavirus pandemic, we are proud to report
that we had a strong year at the MCC Foundation. Thanks to generous gifts totaling $1.6 million and strong investment returns, MCC Foundation assets topped $24.7 million, ranking us among the top community college foundations in Texas!
Those gifts and assets are more than just numbers; they represent a foundation that is strong both fiscally and programmatically: we are proud to report that the MCC Foundation was able to fund 496 scholarships totaling $445,471 for the 2020-2021 academic year! Those awards would not be possible without the generosity of our donors who believe in the life-changing work performed each day at McLennan Community College.
The year 2020 began on a high note with the news that the Foundation again earned the GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency. Of the more than 2 million IRS-registered charities listed by GuideStar, only 0.6 percent earn the platinum designation. We know that trust lies at the heart of any relationship, so transparency remains our most important core value at the MCC Foundation.
In February, the Foundation brought three-time Grammy-winning artist and MCC alumnus Larry Griffin, Jr. to campus through the support of Hearts in the Arts. Griffin, known worldwide as Symbolyc One or S1, credits his time in the MCC Music Industry Careers program for giving him his professional start. Fittingly, a week later, we hosted the Hearts in the Arts Gala, which raises funds to support our visual and performing arts (and future Grammy winners!) The “Chicago”-themed event, chaired by Cynthia and Ray Perry, smashed all records with a 41 percent increase in revenue from the year before!
Shortly after the pandemic hit our community in March, the Foundation launched the “Lend a Hand” campaign for student support. To date, this fund has raised almost $111,000 in much needed-relief for struggling students through Paulanne’s Pantry and the McKown Emergency Fund. This work continues, because the need continues. The Foundation also worked closely with Financial Aid to help students who did not qualify for federal CARES Act relief dollars.
Summer at the MCC Foundation usually means festive gatherings, including the alumni picnic and Hearts in the Arts membership dinner. As social events skidded to a halt, we instead ramped up our outreach by mail, video, and social media. Also in the summer, the Foundation was honored to receive a unique and very generous gift: a beautiful home and three acres on the Lake Waco Golf Course. Once sold, this gift funded 17 transformational new scholarship funds for Presidential, Honors College,

Engineering, and numerous Workforce programs. In fact, during the 2019-2020 year, the Foundation received three estate gifts and two gifts of property, all of which now will help students in perpetuity through endowed scholarships.
The “happiest day of the year” for the MCC Foundation is our annual Scholar, Donor, & Alumni Appreciation Luncheon in September. Again, due to gathering restrictions, we chose a virtual option, launching ThankView video messaging to unite our donors with the scholars they help. We were proud to hear from highly successful alumnus Russ Johnson, who credits MCC with giving him a chance to attend college and achieve success in the tech industry. The Highlander Alumni & Friends Association recognized MCC Nursing Student Nallely
Gonzales with the 2020 Distinguished Leader Award, and Dr. Solomon Cross with the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award.
In keeping with a 34-year tradition, the Foundation Golf Classic continued but in a new location at Bear Ridge Golf Course. Even though we capped attendance for social distanc-ing, tournament revenue was in line with our top three most successful years! The year was dotted with other exceptional and humbling events, including receipt of 35 major gifts, the establishment of 19 new scholarship funds, and the donation of 21,600 bottles of
hand sanitizer to stem the spread of Covid-19 on campus and in the community!
We began this report discussing the uncertainty that this year brought. One thing certain, however, is that none of the success we celebrate would be possible without the MCC Foundation Board of Directors, the MCC Board of Trustees, McLennan administrators, faculty and staff, as well as countless alumni and community friends who support the work of the college through the MCC Foundation. Thank you all for being part of our journey this year.
Fundraising is not about gathering up money, it is about solving problems … helping make things better for our students and our college, and being the link that gives people a way to be part of these solutions. As the new year begins at the MCC Foundation, we remain vigilant in being part of the solution that keeps affordable excellence within reach for all who seek it.
