TRANSCRIPT
FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents,
I feel like I often talk about how busy our school community is as we
facilitate learning opportunities for the children and experiences for our
community that build a wonderful sense of belonging and achievement, but I
don’t think we have ever been as busy as we have been in the past 2 weeks!!
Our Year 3 and 5 children navigated their way through the NAPLAN tests
a couple of weeks ago, we came together with a very special celebration of
the 100th
Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, which
coincided with our Mother’s Day celebrations. These celebrations continued
into the evening of Saturday 13th
May at the St Patrick’s Basilica, we
celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation last weekend and also had our
School Photo day last Thursday.
The Year 3 and 5 children worked their way through the NAPLAN
assessments in a diligent and fairly stress free manner. The children were
familiarised with the types of questions they would experience and then just
encouraged to do their best and demonstrate their level of skill development
in each of the 4 areas. We would expect to get the results back to us by the
middle of Term 3.
Friday 12th
May will go down as a beautiful day of celebration in our
community as we reflected on the 100th
Anniversary of the Apparitions of
Our Lady of Fatima. We set out to ensure that it was going to be a day the
children will remember for many years to come, and from the reactions of
the children at different stages throughout the day, I think we achieved that.
The outdoor Mass was beautiful, enormous thanks to Lorraine Szefczyk,
Pauline Burwood and Natasha Shepherd for the work they did in
contributing to the different parts of preparing for the celebration, we have
had lots of positive feedback about the Mass.
Thanks to all those mothers and grandmothers who attended our special
Mother’s Day Morning Tea, there was a wonderful, community
atmosphere in the hall. Huge thanks to: Peter Brigg, Ryan Bacich, Clory
Carello and Wade Spackman for assisting me in serving our guests. Also
thanks Mrs Fic for keeping all the male hosts focused and organised!!
Our Year 6’s, under the guidance of Stephanie Correia, coordinated a
whole school activity where the children were each given a “jig-saw puzzle
piece” to depict themselves and some fond memories of their time here in
our community. The 237 piece jig-saw puzzle has been put together,
laminated and displayed in the gallery for the people in our community to
see. Thank you to Stephanie and the leaders in our school for organising the
activity.

The children really enjoyed their whole school sausage sizzle and ice-cream for lunch. Thank you to the
hardworking group of ladies from our P&F who provided this for the children. Again, it is an example of an
experience we could not have provided for the children without the support of our P&F. Thank you ladies! And
finally we concluded the day with a range of fun activities that the children rotated through including: a bouncy
castle, tug-o-war, face painting, marshmallow throwing and catching and Rob the Nest. The children seemed to
really enjoy themselves. Denise Plain compiled a 12 minute video which depicts the day and has uploaded it
onto our school website and portal. Please take the time and have a look as it is a beautiful reflection of the
day. Thanks Denise! The celebrations continued onto Saturday evening with a 7:30pm Mass, followed by a
procession through the streets of Fremantle. It was great to have our school so well represented with children,
their parents and staff, sitting together during the Mass at St Patrick’s Basilica and then walking behind our
school banner in the procession.
As far as Bookclub is concerned, Alison Forzatti has now passed the baton (after 7 years) over to Clare
Gendron, Rachel’s mum from our Kindy class. Alison has done an amazing job over that period of time which
has been appreciated by everyone. Huge thanks to Clare for volunteering to take this role on to ensure this
opportunity for the children can continue.
Something that has come up in the last month at our P&F and School Board meetings is that our parish is
looking for volunteers to assist with the children’s liturgy at the 9:45am Mass on Sundays. Each volunteer
would only need to complete this role a couple of times a year, just to spread the load. If you are able to assist,
please let us know at the front office.
A reminder to everyone that our 10 week focus on Mindfulness will be starting next Thursday, the last 5 weeks
of term 2 and the first 5 weeks of term 3. The mindfulness times will be the same times as the Japanese lessons
each Thursday
We also have a focus on Protective Behaviours throughout the school in Term 2. There is some new
legislation now that indicates that the children in all schools need to have access to this programme each year.
This term, all classes from Kindergarten to Year 6 have or will be implementing a “Protective Behaviours”
programme. We are using a 10 lesson programme, which will be taught over the course of the term. The
essence of the programme is based on the premise that all children have a right to feel safe physically and
psychologically. The programme is simply called, Protective Behaviours WA and information about it can be
found on the PBWA website at www.protectivebehaviourswa.org.au. The programme is designed to explicitly teach
the children about safe behaviours for themselves and others. If you have any queries regarding the programme,
please don’t hesitate to speak to your child’s classroom teacher or myself.

MINISTRY- Congratulations on a great job to all of the winners in the drawing competition last term from years PP-Y6. If you did not win then
don’t worry because I can guarantee you that there will be lots more competitions coming up throughout this year. Last fortnight we celebrated
Fatima Day, as it was the 100th Anniversary of Mary appearing to the three children. The Year 6 Class and the staff organised some cool
competitions and activities to do on that day and the school had lots of fun.
Ruby Martinovich - Ministry Leader
LEARNING/IT- In our Math Program, we have started problem solving strategies from Year One to Year Six. Every two weeks there will be a new
problem solving strategy for all years. Thank you to everyone who signed up for the Tellagami competition. There will be a few more competitions
this term that will be heaps of fun.
It has been a busy Term 1 and start to Term 2 for all OLOF students and everyone is buzzing with excitement for the activities throughout the rest of
the year.
Jack Sullivan - Learning & IT Leader
THE ARTS- In the Arts, ukulele has been a big hit for the year six students and they are all sounding very professional with the help of Mia B,
Ruby D and Lily T. Nine Year Six students have been turning up to ukulele every Tuesday morning showing that they are all very committed to the
Ukulele Ensemble Group. Mr Hansen has even picked up a few musical tips!
Every Monday afternoon students from Pre Primary to Year Six have been going into the hall to practice Liturgical Singing, this is run by the
talented guitarist, Mrs Burwood. Every student is sounding magnificent! These songs will be sung during our School Masses, Feast Days and
upcoming Sacraments.
Term 2 is going to be an awesome term in The Arts and everyone should be looking forward to many more fun competitions and numerous
interesting events as the term goes by!!
Jasmine Bacich- 2017 - Arts Leader.
SUSTAINABILITY- Last term, the Our Lady of Fatima School had a good amount of sustainability related activities considering it was only the
start of the year. For example, the Year Six Class started to use the worm farm by using the green waste from student’s lunch boxes. The Pre
Primary, Year 1s and Year 2s, with the help of Mrs Burwood, have been gardening in the Pre Primary recycle garden and the Aboriginal garden on
the oval. The Year 5s have also started to do Waste Free Wednesday again, where they go around to each class, from PP to the Year Six, counting
each student’s amount of disposable plastic wrappers, cling wrap, alfoil and packets in people’s lunch boxes. The class with the least amount of
rubbish, wins a prize for the week.
I hope to see more sustainability activities in the upcoming terms.
Isaac Rodeghiero - Sustainability Leader
SPORT- Last term was a big start to the Year of Sport with the cricket carnival. Year 5 and 6 students participated in the carnival and we all did
really well with the girls coming 2nd and the boys coming 3rd. We also had the swimming carnival and ASCS interschool swimming carnival with
OLOF taking out first place! La Salle was the winner of the OLOF school swimming carnival. Everyone who participated swam very well and made
some big achievements. It was a very competitive day with lots of events ending with the noodle race. On the last Wednesday of Term, we had our
interschool swimming carnival at Fremantle Leisure Centre. We had a few champions and runner ups from our school, which was fantastic! The
events were freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, medley relay and the freestyle relay. We won so many races and everyone did very well.
We are very thankful to Mr. Celenza, Ray and all the parents and teachers who came along. It was a great Term and we’re looking forward to Cross
Country and the events of Term 2.
