Hello Shelley Families Week 6 already! Term Three is such a busy term and both students and staff continue to put in 100% throughout each day. We have so many staff and students unwell with the dreaded flu at the moment and even I have not been immune to getting sick. I will be having surgery soon followed by a period of recovery. This means that I will unfortunately be away for the rest of this term but I will return to work at the start of Term four. In my absence Mrs Chandler has been appointed Principal. Please remember if your child is too unwell to come to school it is important that you notify the office either by phone or email to make them aware of your childs absence. If you are unable to do this on the day then a note to the classroom teacher on the day they return to school is acceptable. Please do not send your children to school sick. Be sure to put aside the evening of Wednesday 2 September, 6.30pm - 7.30pm when we will be opening our classrooms to families and friends to give your child the opportunity to share his/her learning experiences. The emphasis is on your child sharing with you their learning over the year and so there will not be the opportunity for parent and teacher interviews on the night. If you would like an interview please make an appointment with the class teacher at another time. Strong literacy and numeracy skills lay the foundation for all students to succeed at school and in life. We are currently developing our whole school operational plan in English that links to the Australian Curriculum and that articulates a consistent and rigorous K-6 focus. We encourage you to read our newest addition to our newsletter, Curriculum Capersto find out more about what is happening in our school. For staffing and planning purposes for 2016, if your child is not returning to Shelley Primary School next year please notify the school office at your earliest convenience. Please do not include Year 6 students going into Year 7. Parents who are aware of new families coming into the area are requested to assist us by asking them to contact the school with regards to enrolment. Parents we need your HELP!! It has become a real chore each week sorting out the overflowing lost property bins of school clothing. PLEASE PLEASE use a permanent laundry marker and put your childs name and room number on each piece of clothing to enable us to return it (and save you the cost of replacement). Kind regards Gillian Murgia (Principal) BOOK WEEK DRESS UP - THURSDAY 27 AUGUST By popular request from the students we will be hosting a dress up parade on Thursday, 27 August at 8:45am. Students are invited to bring their favourite book and dress up as a character from a book. We hope that parents will be able to join us on this morning to celebrate and clap as the characters parade across the stage. Following our book parade students (from PP-year 6) will be participating in multi aged group activities with a staff member. Together they will read books and participate in activities lighting up our world with books!

Please do not send your children to school sick. Be sure to put aside the evening of Wednesday 2 September, 6.30pm - 7.30pm when we will be opening our classrooms to families and friends to give your child the opportunity to share his/her learning experiences. WHY NOT EMAIL YOUR ABSENCE?? CHANGE TO WEBSITE - ABSENCES You can now go to the website www.shelleyps.wa.edu.au on the left hand side and if you click on the email addresses as shown here it should automatically open up your email with the address inserted. This is such an easy way to send absences to the school. Don‟t forget to add your child‟s room number (if you don‟t know it then put in your child‟s teacher‟s name). This email address is not for general enquiries. Thank you.

ENROLMENTS FOR 2016 Planning for 2016 student enrolments has begun. It is important that we are informed as soon as possible if your child is not returning to Shelley Primary School in 2016. Please notify the office in writing of any children leaving from Kindergarten to Year 5 to assist with planning for next year.

FROM THE LIBRARY - SHELLEY PRIMARY BOOK EXCHANGE As part of our Book Week celebrations, we are pleased to announce a new initiative in encouraging children to read, and are launching the Shelley Primary Book Exchange. The rules are very simple. Each child may choose one book per week from the special Exchange Bookcase to take home to read. They can then bring it back to swap for another. If they love the book they may keep it, but it would be great if they could instead bring in something else from home they no longer want or need, (with their parents‟ permission). This is a great way to declutter books from home, knowing they will go to someone else to enjoy. The book exchange will operate Wednesday to Friday in the Library - Mrs Wynn will have a book exchange for Pre-Primary and Kindy (and some for adults too!) outside Room 14. All donations of suitable books will be gratefully received. Please direct any queries to Mrs Susan Sadler in the Library, Wednesday to Friday.

HAPPY READING!

CURRICULUM CAPERS

CURRICULUM CAPER iSTAR – TRY / TRANSFER „Try and Transfer‟ is the natural progression from „Show and Share‟ in the iSTAR process. The learning goals have been articulated during „Inform and Inspire‟, the learning has been demonstrated and shared during „Show and Share‟ and now it time for the students to have a go practising the learning and sharing together. This is the time where students try the new learning with support from teachers and peers. They need to have a go, make mistakes and learn from the feedback that is given. This stage may provide students with multiple ways of trying and transferring their learning. During this time students often work with peers gathering additional knowledge, problem solving, clarifying their learning as they transfer their knowledge within the tasks set. Through this section of learning where students are trying new skills, acquiring knowledge and understanding with support, their confidence and capacity to transfer their learning increases ready for the next stage of iSTAR – „Apply and Action‟. Reference: WAPPA (2013. iSTAR) – A Model for Connected Practice Within Classrooms.

COMMONWEALTH BANK SCHOOL BANKING UPDATE – PLEASE READ Concerns have been raised regarding the „Cosmic Light Beam Torch‟ reward item due to the inclusion of four button batteries that can be accessed by unscrewing the back of the torch. Whilst this reward has been independently tested and deemed to meet relevant product standards the Commonwealth Bank have made the decision to proactively withdraw this item from the School Banking Rewards Program. Parents/Guardians are requested to dispose of any „Cosmic Light Beam Torches‟ their child may have already received as part of the Rewards Program. CANTEEN CORNER The canteen committee are continuing our preparations for Faction Carnival day on the 11 September and would ask you all to watch out for the volunteer roster posters which will be put up about the school. It would be great if you could volunteer just half an hour or so of your time. This way, everyone will get to watch their children race and also be able to enjoy some warm or cold food and a coffee, cool drink or ice cream. Please continue to support your School P and C canteen. We also ask that you donate some small cakes or a slice on the day (if at all possible, please), so we can sell it at our coffee and cake stall. Please include an ingredients list so we can be allergy aware. If you are unable to donate cake, perhaps you would be able to buy some instead. HELLO SHELLEY FAMILIES, Our billy karts are taking form! The children are having a great time constructing their

karts. Last week they put on the back and sides, and this week they will be painting them before the wheels go on. They cannot wait to race them and one of the children are already ahead of the game This week on Science day, we are making lava lamps, so if you have a spare plastic bottle you do not want, please feel free to drop them into us, or even better, come and join in the fun!

We are also lending a helping hand in sticking the Earn and Learn stickers into the books. The children absolutely love helping out, so parents, keep bringing in those stickers!
