Our Vision: An Excellent School Where Students Achieve Their Potential
School Opinion Surveys The Department of Education and Training’s annual School Opinion Survey has commenced for 2015. All parents/caregivers, school staff, and a representative sample of students, will be invited to take part. Responses to the survey questions provide useful information to us about how our school is progressing against a range of items. This information is used to help us reflect on our programs and practice.
Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be coming home to all families today with the eldest student in the family. Please note in a change from previous years, the Parent/Caregivers Survey requires a response online using the web address provided (School Opinion Survey – Blue Form). The online survey is open now and closes at midnight Friday, 31 July.
Survey responses are anonymous and are reported back to the school later this year in a way that cannot identify any individual response. These surveys are an important part of our monitoring and reporting processes. I encourage all parents/caregivers to fully participate in the survey and would like to thank you in advance for your participation.
If you have any questions or concerns about the survey, please contact myself (Mr Greg Brand) on 3813 4333 or make a free call to 1800 067 971.

Data Collection about School Students with Disability All Australian governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability.
The collection of this data will assist teachers, principals and education authorities support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability.
In 2015, the full national collection of data on school students with disability will be required in all Australian schools.
This new national data collection will reinforce the actions required of schools under the national Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005.
Only aggregate level information, which will not identify any individual student, is part of the collection this year. The only data being reported nationally are: • the number of students who are provided
with an adjustment to address a disability,
• The level of adjustments that we provide for those students,
• And the board category of disability.
Further information and a fact sheet for parents/carers is available from the Department’s website: http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html.
Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact Mrs Donna Bracker (Head of Special Education Services).
Student Behaviour while travelling on Public Transport Parents and carers play an important role in teaching children about appropriate behaviour when travelling on public transport. While most students are well-behaved when travelling by public transport, a few misbehaving students can make it an unpleasant journey for all commuters.
The Code of Conduct for School Students Travelling on Buses sets out the rights, roles and responsibilities of students, parents and carers and bus drivers to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to and from school.
To keep our students happy and safe, parents and carers are encouraged to discuss expected student behaviour with their children, including:
• showing respect for other passengers and their property;
• waiting for the bus in an orderly manner;
• behaving appropriately at all times while on the bus;
• using only designated bus stops;
• behaving safely and using caution when getting on or off the bus;
• following directions of the driver in case of an emergency or a breakdown.

SWPBS - School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, Be A Learner
Focus lessons for the next fortnight are: Week 2: Be Responsible – Wear the School Uniform. Week 3: Be Responsible – Be in the right place at the right time with the right equipment. Another great semester has begun and with many Pollen Points, Buzz Postcards and great rewards for those students following the 4 Brassall B’s – Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, Be A Learner. Please talk with your children about the 4 Brassall B’s and their personal goals to achieve the rewards that go with each Buzz Postcard milestone. It would be great to see more than the 500 students who enjoyed the party at the end of Semester One, enjoying the reward party planned for the end of the Semester Two.

Interschool Sport This semester students will have the opportunity to trial for Interschool Sport. The trials will take place over the coming weeks and games will commence in Week 8 on Friday 4 September. The cost for all Interschool Sport participants will be $65 per player. Please be aware of this cost if your child is taking part in the trials as there will be a short payment turn-around after teams are selected. NAIDOC Celebration Days During the last week of Term 2 we celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through a range of activities. Over the 2 days the students were entertained with dance performances and engaged in a range of dance, art and game workshops. Students enjoyed the range of activities and produced some beautiful artworks. The hard work of Mr Maher, Miss Graham and their team of staff definitely made for an excellent 2 days. We would like to thank many of the community organisations that continue to support our message of culture: Ipswich State High School, KAMBU and PCYC. Without their support running these activities would be very difficult.
100% Attendance - Awesome
We are very excited to be celebrating 100% Attendance for several of our students next week. On Monday’s Assembly we will be presenting students with 100% Attendance in Term 2 with their certificate.
To follow this on Friday during Assembly we will be celebrating those students with 100% Attendance for all of Semester 1, this includes both Term 1 & 2. These students will receive a certificate and a small token to recognise their outstanding attendance for the start of the year.
All parents are welcome to both of these assemblies to help celebrate these milestones with their children. The following students will be celebrated.

From the Literacy Coach
Premier’s Reading Challenge The 2015 Premier’s Reading Challenge has now commenced! As well as being fun, the challenge aims to boost children’s literacy skills by encouraging students to read widely for pleasure and learning, to develop their imagination, and to cultivate a passion for literature.
Last year, more than 108,000 students and 700 schools registered in the program. More than 77,500 students successfully completed the challenge reading 1.65 million books. This year, the Premier has challenged all state and non-state school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books.
Prep to Year 2 students can experience books through shared reading, listening to stories or reading picture books. The aim for the 2015 challenge is to reach a total of two million books read.
The reading period for the 2015 Premier's Reading Challenge closes on Friday 28 August. This will coincide with Brassall’s Book Week celebrations.
At Brassall State School, we will be using our Home Reading Logs or the PRC Student Reading Record to record books read. Students who complete the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement, while those who don’t manage to complete the Reading requirements will be issued a Certificate of Participation. All students have been registered, so all you need to do is encourage Reading at home, record it, and submit the log by 28 August.
For more information about the Premier’s Reading Challenge, please visit: http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge or contact Colleen Brown on [email protected] .
You too can play a big part in your children’s future by encouraging them to be part of this positive Reading initiative.

Homework Club – Starting Soon! Research tells us that offering learning opportunities outside of school hours is one way to improve the learning success of students and positively influence educational and personal outcomes.
Homework Club provides a safe and supportive out-of-school learning environment where our students can participate in activities that develop their academic and social skills.
Your child can attend Homework Club at no cost, every Monday afternoon at the Reflection Room (Mrs Lovey’s room) from 3pm to 4pm. It will begin Week 2, Term 3 and will be run by The Smith Family volunteers as well as some of our fabulous Brassall State School teachers.
The Smith Family requires you to complete a registration and consent form for each child who attends Homework Club. Could you please contact Mrs Lovey by phone on 3813 4333 or email [email protected] if you require further information or would like to sign up your child.

Woolworths Earn and Learn Woolworths and Modern Teaching Aids have teamed up again to support schools. Every time you shop at Woolworths you will be offered Earn and Learn stickers to collect for our school. The stickers are points towards the purchasing of learning resources for our Brassall students. In previous years this promotion has helped us purchase Home Readers, Science resources, art and craft, and sports equipment. If you shop at Woolworths, please collect the Earn and Learn stickers and send them to school for counting. Kandice Hutson Head of Curriculum

2015 Brassall State School Athletics Results Waiting with angst many students and teachers were excited for the start of our second Whole School Athletics Carnival at Brassall State School.
