Conformers are people whose minds are controlled by the world. The world changes their minds by exerting pressure from outside. But transformers are people who are controlled by the Holy Spirit. Dearly Beloved in Christ,

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of

your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is

good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)

Paul reminds us that we are called to be ‘transformers’ and not

‘conformers’. Conformers are people whose minds are controlled by the

world. The world changes their minds by exerting pressure from outside. But

transformers are people who are controlled by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit

changes their minds by releasing power from within. If God controls your

thinking, you are a transformer. Many people think that they can control their

minds by ‘willpower’. But it fails many times. Paul from his experience says

that when we yield our will to God, His power will take over and give us the

will power that we need to live a victorious Christian life. In the book of

Daniel, we see four faithful Jewish men who became ‘transformers’ by

resisting the Babylonian customs. They had every chance of submitting to

the new customs and practices. Instead of being changed, they became

channels of change. God used them to transform the minds of the powerful

kings and thus bringing glory to God in the pagan land.

When we think of Daniel, we see he was a young man endowed with a bright

future in Jerusalem. But he was caught as a slave along with his friends by

King Nebuchadnezzar and was brought to Babylon. Far away from the home

land, these young men were forced to learn Babylonian languages and skills.

They were even changed their names. They were assigned to eat the food

the king ate and the wine he drinks. ’’But Daniel resolved that he would not

defile himself with the king’s food or with the wine that he drank.’’ (Daniel

1:8). Daniel knew that he belonged to the Lord. He loved the Lord with all

his heart. So, he trusted and obeyed God. Hence, he was able to take right

decisions. Daniel never compromised his faith and practices. God was his

priority in everything. Obeying God was more important to him than obeying

the king. His decision was to please the Lord thereby bringing glory to Him.

As the church, we are celebrating Family Sunday in this month. The changes

that are taking place in the society have adversely affected our families very

much. It needs a serious attention to make our families secure. God

designed families to be the ‘paradise on earth’. But today they are changing

to ‘miniature hell’. To prevent this, our families are to be based on Christian

character and values. Faith begins at home. ’’Train up a child in the way he

should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22; 6).

In the midst of our busy schedules we neglect basic Christian disciplines

such as family prayer, studying the Word of God and worship at the church.

As parents, let us be models to our children.

May the Holy Spirit help all our families to set priorities right and lead

a meaningful life.

May God bless us all, With Prayers, Rev. Sajit Thomas John, Vicar.

Dearly Beloved, The second Sunday of October has been set aside by our church as “The Day for People with Special Skills.” This is a special day where we remember that people that are differently abled are also children of God and are to be accepted as equals. Leviticus 19:14 states: “You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.” Even though a deaf person cannot hear, and a blind person cannot see, God can hear and see. The Old Testament teaches us that all people are children of God and are loved by God. Further in this same chapter we have that familiar command to “love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). The justification for these commands is also given “I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:14 and 18). These commands are to be followed because they are given to us by God. It is that simple. Job when trying to show that he is a righteous person states “I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame (Job 29:15.)” In our community and in society there are people who are differently abled. We not only need to uphold them in prayers, but we also need to love them and make them feel welcomed. We need to make them feel like God’s children. Yours in Christ’s Service, Rev. Shibi Abraham, Youth Chaplain.
