On October 16 our class and Mrs. Stock’s kindergarten class all drove to

Lynd’s Fruit Farm. The farm is about 10 miles from our school. The farm specializes in growing many different kinds of apples in the

apple orchards. They also grow several kinds of pumpkins, many types of gourds

and colorful Indian corn. We went to the farm to learn about pumpkins, gourds and corn.

Just after we arrived at the farm we met our guide, Sue! We then boarded a hay wagon so that we could ride to the field

where the Indian corn was growing. The wagon was pulled by a tractor. A very nice man named Ron drove the tractor.

There were bales of hay in the wagon!

Indian corn got its name from Central and South American

Indians who first grew corn 5,000 years

ago!

After picking our Indian corn we got back on the hay wagon and rode to the gourd patch. Gourds are very closely

related to pumpkins. They grow on vines.

Our last stop on the wagon ride was at the outdoor classroom and the pumpkin patch! The outdoor classroom was built from apple crates.

We sat in the classroom and listened to Sue as she taught us all about corn, gourds and pumpkins. When she finished, she gave each

of us a glass of apple cider.

Sue then directed us to the pumpkin patch. We each picked a pumpkin to take home along with our three gourds and two ears of

corn!

When we returned to school the day after the trip we began making things about our trip. We wrote stories. We made collages and we

drew pictures. We wrote about everything that we made!
