DOUGLAS COUNTYDOUGLAS COUNTYPopulation: 105,395(July 2009 estimates,
Population Research Center at Portland State University)
What is now Douglas Countywas originally part of UmpquaCounty, established by theOregon territorial governmentin 1851 — just eight yearsafter the start of the majorwestward migration over theOregon Trail.
Gold was discovered in theUmpqua Valley, bringing aninstant increase in settlers.
The first meeting of theUmpqua County governmentwas held in Elkton. Subsequentmeetings took place in GreenValley and in Yoncalla.
In 1852, Douglas Countywas carved out of a portion ofUmpqua County lying east ofthe Coast Range. It was namedafter U.S. Sen. Stephen A.Douglas of Illinois, a staunchsupporter of Oregon statehood.
Later, the gold boom inUmpqua County petered out, thepopulation dwindled and in 1862 therest of that county was absorbed intoDouglas County.
That followed the 1856 annexationof Camas Valley from Coos County.Further boundary adjustments weremade with Jackson and Lane countiesin 1915.
Today, Douglas County covers 5,071square miles. It’s bordered by sixcounties — Lane County to the north,Jackson, Josephine and Curry counties
to the south, Coos County to the westand Klamath County to the east.
Winchester was the original countyseat of Douglas County, but only heldthat distinction for two years.
Residents later voted to move theseat in 1854 to Deer Creek, which, ayear later, was renamed Roseburg afterearly settler Aaron Rose.
Douglas County originally operatedunder a county court, featuring a coun-ty judge and two commissioners.
The current system of three commis-sioners with equal authority was adopt-ed in 1965. In 2008, commissionerswere elected on a nonpartisan basis.Previously, they were elected by partyor candidates could run as nonaffiliat-ed.
Besides the three commissioners, who are elected by voters throughoutthe county, Douglas County also hasan elected sheriff, district attorney, clerk, assessor, treasurer and surveyor.

State University)
Nestled in the heart of Douglas County, Roseburg hasdubbed itself “The Timber Capital of the Nation,” and
serves as thegateway to theDouglas fir-lined NorthUmpqua Riverand Crater LakeNational Parkvia Highway138, whichheads east fromtown.
The regionalhub as well asDouglas Countyseat attractslocals andtourists alike toits culturalevents andriverside parks,as well as theDouglas CountyFair and sum-mer concertseries Music onthe Half Shellthat lure big-name perform-ers.
The SouthUmpqua River
winds through the heart of Roseburg, meeting up withthe North Umpqua just northwest of town.
The city of 21,355 is the area’s retail and homeimprovement destination and boasts restaurants with
international cuisine from Chinese and Italian to Greek,Mexican and Japanese.
Located just off of Interstate 5, Roseburg is 72 milessouth of Eugene, and 124 miles north of the Californiaborder. It rests amid some of the world’s richest timberland, and became a major lumber producer during thepost-World War II housing boom. At the timber indus-try’s height, 278 mills operated in Douglas County.
First visited by white settlers and gold seekers in the1840s, the town was platted as Deer Creek by New York-er Aaron Rose in 1851. Three years later, the town wasofficially mapped, renamed Roseburg — after Aaron —and became the county seat.
Roseburg’s Main Street follows the Applegate Trail, mapped in 1846 by pioneers led by Jesse Applegate andLevi Scott. A historical marker on the west side of theDouglas County Courthouse commemorates and describesthis wagon trail, also called the Old South Road.

Mount Nebo, named afterthe mountain that Mosesstood atop to view the prom-ised land, overlooks the cityand Garden Valley. Pioneersbelieved this aptly describedthe high ground in the bendof the South Umpqua Riverthat proves a spectacularviewpoint.
Roseburg abounds with his-toric homes and landmarks, but many spots were irrepara-bly damaged or destroyedduring a 1959 explosiondowntown that leveled busi-nesses, killed 14 people, injured more than 100 othersand caused $10 million indamage. The Blast, as it’sknown, was the third-mostdeadly disaster in Oregonhistory, and today is the sub-ject of seasonal walkingtours.
In spite of adversity, the city hasmanaged to maintain many historicbuildings, including the neo-classicalDouglas County Courthouse at 1036S.E. Douglas Ave. The structure wasbuilt in a space city founder AaronRose donated in the 1850s for use as apublic square. In 1955, rectangularadditions were made to each end ofthe original 1929 structure.
The Mill-Pine neighborhood wasRoseburg’s first nationally registered
historic district, commemorating thecommunity’s railroad workers of thelate 19th century. The housing devel-opment grew after the first steamlocomotives arrived in Roseburg in1872.
The railroad established a round-house, repair yard, warehouses and anoffice until the division headquartersand shops were moved to Eugene.
The former Southern Pacific Rail-road Depot at 705 S.E. Sheridan St.
was the third to serve Roseburg. It isnow a microbrewery operated by theMcMenamin’s Bros. of Portland. Thecoming of the railroad was vital tocommunities along the north-southtransportation route and Roseburg wasa major railroad center until 1927.Passenger service was terminated in1951.

district are echoes of a not-so-distant past when timberbarons and respected doctors, lawyers and politicians builtopulent monuments to their success.
The elaborately decorated three-story Queen Anne-styleMoses Parrott house at 1772 S.E. Jackson St. is a vividreminder of this. Parrott, a shoemaker, came to this areawith his wife, Tennessee, in the early 1850s.
Today, the home is privately owned. No tours are given, but it can be viewed easily from Stephens Street.
The Floed-Lane house at 544 S.E. Douglas Ave. is morecommonlyknown as theJoseph LaneHouse and is theonly survivingstructure associ-ated with thispioneer soldierand statesman.Lane was a com-missionedbrigadier generalduring the Mexi-can War. He wasthe Oregon Terri-
tory’s delegate to Congress from 1851 to 1859 and was thestate’s first U.S. senator from 1859 to 1861. In 1860 hewas the Southern Democratic candidate for vice president.
The home was owned by Lane’s daughter and son-in-law, John and Emily Floed, and built between 1866-76.Lane lived nearby during his final years and spent much ofhis time with his daughter. The Floed-Lane House ismaintained by the Douglas County Historical Society.Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays or byappointment.
Admission is free but donations are accepted.
Today, Roseburg also boasts two cinemas, theaters, bookstores, coffee houses and numerous restaurants.

We’re proud of our community.Being a strong community leader AmeriTitle is proud to commit our resources and support to many worthy Douglas County projects that help make Douglas County such an outstanding place to live and work. As a real estate settlement company; providing real estate title and escrow services, we believe giving back to our community is just an extension of our AmeriTitle service ethic. Through fi nancial contributions plus the many hours of employee volunteerism we hope to help make our community a little better by partnering with numerous Douglas County non-profi ts. These wonderful partners such as Guide Dog Puppies for the Blind, Sunrise Enterprises, Umpqua Homes for the Handicapped, Family Development Center, Community Cancer Center, Boys and Girls Club, Saving Grace, United Way, The Patu Foundation, Music on the Half Shell, Riverbend Live, and many other community groups are making a real difference in Douglas County.
Through the years AmeriTitle has made a strong commitment to Douglas County. Not only our support of like minded, service oriented community leaders and organizations, but through building and owning our Landmark building at 1495 NW Garden Valley. Being in the real estate servicing industry, it is important to us to own meaningful real property in Douglas County. So join with us and be proud of our community—it is truly a special place.
Remember, you have the choice of which real estate title and escrow company to trust with your next real estate transaction. Real estate, as community involvement, is a serious endeavor; trust companies like AmeriTitle who have the best interest in our community.
Community involvement is a serious endeavor.

HUNTING
CRAIG REEDThe News-Review
Douglas County outdoor enthusiastsdon’t have to go far to find birds andwildlife.
The area’s hills, rivers and deep woodsoffer an excellent opportunity for sports-men during hunting season.
From deer to turkeys, the call of thewild is strong in Douglas County. The areahas some of the best, most diverse habitatin the state. Virtually every corner of thecounty provides habitat for some wildlifespecies.”
People interested in the hunting andfishing available in Douglas County areencouraged to obtain Oregon Departmentof Fish and Wildlife fishing synopses andthe big game and game bird regulations tocheck dates, boundaries and regulations.
These are available at the ODFW officeat 4192 North Umpqua Highway, Rose-burg, or at counters in stores where sport-ing goods are sold.
BIG GAMEDouglas County is one of the best coun-
ties in Oregon for hunting black-tailedbucks. The deer are found almost every-where in the county. Numbers are higheron agricultural land and on 5- to 20-year-old harvested units in the forests.
There is also now a hunting season forwhitetail bucks after that species in Dou-glas County came off the endangeredspecies list a few years ago. Those deer
can be found at lower elevations in thevalleys of the Umpqua or the nearby oaksavannah hills.
Roosevelt elk live throughout the coun-ty. They feed in new clearcut areas and usemore mature timber for cover and shelter. The first day or two of elk hunting seasonsis traditionally most successful. After this
time, the animals usually move to thethickest cover they can find.
The best population of black bears inDouglas County is in the Coast Rangearound berry patches and old orchards. The next best place to find bears is in the

lower Cascades. Douglas County has some of the highest
densities of cougars recorded in the UnitedStates. These big cats are primarily foundin good elk and deer habitat since theseanimals are their favorite foods. A portionof the Umpqua Valley and surroundingfoothills is open for cougar hunting allyear with the appropriate tag.
Douglas County also is home to manyother species including coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, silver gray squirrels, beaver, otter and muskrats. Very few of these ani-
mals are hunted by the general public butthey are pursued by trappers. Silver graysquirrels are not legal to trap, but are legalto hunt.
Trapping regulations are available at theregional ODFW office in Roseburg or areavailable on the Internet athttp://www.dfw.state.or.us/
FOWLTurkeys were introduced to this area
several years ago. The county’s turkeypopulation has expanded into the largest inthe state. There are now two turkey hunt-ing seasons in Douglas County — in thefall and spring.
Turkeys are scattered throughout thecounty. Much of their habitat is on privateland so it is always a good idea to obtainpermission from landowners before hunt-ing season begins.
Other game birds in the county aremountain quail, valley quail, blue grouse, ruffed grouse, band-tailed pigeons, mourn-ing doves, ducks and geese.
Brushy hillsides, creek bottoms, springsand clearcut areas provide homes for themountain quail. Douglas County has goodpopulations of the bird. Valley quail arefound in agricultural areas on the valley

floor. Most of their habitat is private property so permission isneeded to hunt.
Blue grouse are found primarily in higher-elevation forestswhere they spend a lot of time near berry patches and on theedges of clearcuts. They also spend some time in old-growthtimber stands.
Creek and river bottoms, springs and other moist areas arepopular home sites for ruffed grouse.
Weather and migration dictatewhether band-tailed pigeons will befound in Douglas County during thehunting season. The birds frequentforests around mineral springs throughsummer and early autumn. After thefirst warm rains fall, the birds move toberry patches and when cooler rainshit, the pigeons begin their migration toCalifornia where they will winter.
If there’s a long, warm fall, bandtailswill be found in good numbers. Duringa cool fall, the birds will migrate quick-ly and hunting opportunities will becurtailed.
Like bandtails, mourning doves canbe found in good numbers in DouglasCounty whenever there’s a long, warmfall.
Douglas County is not a major popu-lation center for ducks, but there aresmall populations of wood ducks, mal-lards and a growing winter population
of wigeons. Those birds are found primarily along rivers and atponds on the valley floor.
Canada geese were brought into Douglas County several yearsago and the population has expanded dramatically. They arefound primarily along rivers and livestock pastures and mosthunting is done with decoys. Geese are usually found on privateproperty so hunters are reminded to check with landowners forpermission to hunt.

In the early 1850s settlers began to spill intothe Cow Creek watershed, but it wasn’t untilthe 1880s that the Glendale townsite was plot-ted after the railroad was extended from Rose-burg. The town was originally called Julia forsettler Julia Abraham. A dispute over owner-ship resulted in the name change. The origin ofthe name Glendale is unclear, but lore suggestsa resident from the Scottish glens may havehad a hand in it. The town’s first sawmill wasconstructed in 1882 by Sol Abraham, who sup-plied timber for railroad construction.
Today the rural community boasts restau-rants, a bakery, gas station, a grocery store andthe Village Inn Tavern, which celebrates thecommunity’s milling past with a giant sawblade protruding from its side.
