Penna. Vital Statistics.Pen ns ylv ani a' s d eath ra te f or

1924 was one of the lo wes t in thehistory of the State. Statistics compiled by Dr. Wilmer R. Batt, chiefof the bureau of vital statistics, show that the 1924 death rate was12.5 per 1000 of population. In1923, the rate was 13.3 per 1000.

D ur ing the year, a t ot al o f 116,00 0 persons died in Pennsylvania. That figme is approximately 7 0less than in 1923. The death ratesfrom tuberculosis ancl diseases ofinfancy were the lowest in the history of t he S ta te in the pas t y ea r,Dr. Batt reported.

Seventy-one persons in each 100,00 0 unit of population died from tuberculosis of the lungs in 1924 ascontrasted with 75 in 1923. The1924 infant mortali ty rate was 80per JOOO births. In 1923, the ratewas 88, so that 2000 less babiesdied fro m diseases o f in fan cy inJ924 than in the preceding year.B ot h t he inf an t mor ta li ty and t hetuberculosis rates have been cut inh alf in t he last 18 years, Dr. Battr epor ted. In 1906, the tuberculosisrate was 130, while the i nf an tmortality rate was 167.

Contagious diseases which took alarge tol l of death in former yearsh ave now been rob bed o f much oftheir terror, the death rate statisticsreveal. Typhoid fever which killedoff 4000 persons in 1906 was res ponsib le f or b ut 340 dea th s in19 24.

The principal causes of death in1924 were heart disease, pneumoniaand violence. These three causes ofdeath contr ibuted approximatelyone-quarter of all the deaths inPennsylvania last year. The firsttwo are reg ard ed as more o r les sinevitable because people live longernow than they did two decades ago.

"I f we watch om step a bit morecarefully when traveling and do notgo so fast on high gearall the time,"Dr. B at t s tated , " th e n umb ers o fdeaths fr0111 violence will be materially decreased and we will livelonger."

The deaths from violence includeautomobile accidents , t ra in col lisions. homicides and suicides as wellas the industrial mishaps that yearly t ake a l arge to ll o f human live s.
