Leaving a LegacyAugust is What Will Be Your
Legacy Month. Have you everthought about what kind of legacyyou will leave? You probably havealready made a bigger impact inthe lives of your loved ones thanyou realize. Here are some waysyou can continue to build a legacythat future generations willappreciate and cherish.
Knowledge, skills and hobbies.Consider teaching a familymember or friend somethingyou’re passionate about, whetherit’s sewing, gardening, woodworking or bird-watching.Whenever they participate in thatsame activity, they will rememberyou introducing them to it andthe time spent together.
Recipes. Food brings peopletogether, and every family hastraditional favorites. Write downthe recipes you’re known for soyour loved ones will have themfor years to come and think of youwhen enjoying them.
A positive attitude. Everybodyfaces challenges in life, but you
can set a good example byembracing change and alwayslooking for a silver lining. Treatevery day as a gift, and let otherssee you enjoy both big and smallblessings.
Love and kindness. Perhaps thebiggest legacy you can leavebehind is showing others howmuch you care. Volunteering at acharity, giving comforting hugs orsimply being a good friend are allways to leave a legacy of love.

I am continuing my writingabout the meaning of thebehaviors of the disoriented olderadult from last month.
I want you to think of the timewhen you started a job in a newcompany. One first has to learnthe physical layout: where thebathrooms are, your work area, the coffee pot, and so forth. Thenone explores the people and theirrelationships: who your colleaguesare, the boss; who is friendly, whois not. As you gather information, you begin to feel morecomfortable. Disoriented olderadults also experience this need tomake sense of their environmentand the people around them. When a disoriented elderly is at
home, then it is easy to think,“Oh, my mother is in a familiarplace; she won’t have thisproblem,” but, actually, if theperson is reliving experience fromanother time or retreating to atime and place where she feltuseful, or is relieving pain of beingold and useless or resolving anunfinished issue from long ago, then the here and now does not fitwith what is going on in hermind’s eye. The differencebetween the environments, strangers being people who do notfit into the personal reality. Olderadults strive to make sense ofstrange and sometimesunbearable reality and to find aplace that feels comfortable, where relationships and peopleare familiar. Older adults also seekharmony and balance, butfulfilling these needs becomesmore complicated becauseeyesight, hearing, mobility andmemory fail. How does one findharmony amidst the cacophony ofan institutional life?
How does one find balance ifone cannot stand up? How doesone incorporate beauty into lifethat is concerned primarily withdeficit? One does not. DisorientedOlder adults retreat from theugliness or dissonance and insteadrelieve moments of harmony fromthe past.

Nurse’s Notes
Hello All,I found this needed a lot of
editing and revising. It wasn’t abadly written article, but it popsup way, way over in mynewsletter. So to save you time, Ipasted and copied my editedversion below from Illustratus.Hopefully it’s not too late forsome of you.
August Nurse Article:What is influenza (flu)? The
flu is a contagious respiratoryillness caused by viruses thatinfect the nose, throat, and lungs. The best way to prevent the flu isby getting a flu vaccine each yearand washing your hands.
Signs and symptoms of flu.People who have the flu often feelsome or all of these symptoms:fever, cough, sore throat, runny orstuffy nose, body aches, headaches, fatigue, and sometimesvomiting and diarrhea, thoughthis is more common in children.
How flu spreads. Expertsbelieve that flu viruses spreadmainly by droplets made whenpeople with flu cough, sneezeor talk.
These droplets land in mouths
or noses of other people. Lessoften, a person might also get fluby touching a surface.
You may be able to pass on theflu to someone else before youknow you are sick or while youare sick. Most healthy adults maybe able to infect others beginning1 day before symptoms developand up to 5 to 7 days after. Somepeople, especially young childrenand people with weakenedimmune systems, might be able toinfect others for an even longertime.
How serious is the flu? It isunpredictable, varying widelyfrom one season. Factors ofinfluence: what flu viruses arespreading, how much flu vaccineis available and the number whotake advantage of it, when vaccineis available, and how well the fluvaccine is matched to flu viruses.
Certain people are at greaterrisk for serious complications ifthey get the flu.
This includes older people, young children, pregnant womenand people with certain healthconditions.
