All ATP-XX seminars can be given in German or English except for those of David Giltner and
Karin Bodewits; these are always conducted in English.
Most of our seminars include a book with the seminar content for each of the seminar par-
ticipants.
Some seminars can be booked as either a personal in-house seminar or as stand-alone
online course. Some other seminars offer the possibility to be enriched by a blended
learning format, in which the participants get some theoretical input up front in the form of
online modules. In this way, we can use more of the workshop time for exercises and
questions.

NaturalScience.Careers team
Dr. Karin Bodewits comes from the Netherlands where
she studied Biology. After spending some time at Puleva
Biotech in Spain and Unilever in China, she completed a
PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Edinburgh. In
2012, she founded the successful company Natu-
ralScience.Careers, a seminar and talk provider for natural-
and life scientists. In this function, she became book au-
thor, short story writer, speaker and seminar leader. She
published a wide range of career- and soft-skill relates arti-
cles in magazines like Science Careers, Chemistry World
and Naturejobs. With her partner and two sons she lives in
Munich, where she spends much time wondering what to
do next.
Dr. Philipp Gramlich has studied and researched chemistry
(>1800 citations, Researchgate 2019) at five universities in
Germany, Australia and Scotland. He gained experience in in-
dustry, first at baseclick, a biotechnology start-up and later at
Eurofins Genomics as Teamleader R&D, QC and Analytics, be-
ing responsible for up to 22 staff. Since 2016, he is fully focus-
ing on his work as co-founder of NaturalScience.Careers. He
specialises in seminars and talks about career development,
leadership and gender in science. Since 2016, he regularly
writes career columns for Nachrichten aus der Chemie.

Peter Kronenberg is currently coordinating a research project at
NaturalScience.Careers with which he seeks to better understand
communication design processes at science conferences. He´s got
a background in Cultural Studies, Gender Studies and Business
Management. Besides growing up as a ‘digital native’, Peter’s flu-ency in digital media platforms, online marketing and web-promo-
tion has been shaped by his engagement as a freelancer in various
management and marketing projects, such as promotion of Karin
Bodewits’ novel "You Must Be Very Intelligent: The PhD Delusion",
or PR/social media work for Tranzit, a theatre/performance of
zusammen leben e.V. (winner of the German integration price
2018). His highly interactive workshops are inspired by the meth-
ods of Thiagi among others.
Dr. Lisa Steinhauser brings along rich experiences from four differ-
ent companies. She worked in the areas of pharma research, food
analytics and analytical instruments for multinationals as well as
SMEs. She took a variety of roles, from product manager and sales
manager to a position as team leader for nine co-workers in a
pharma company. All of these experiences enrich her seminars
and coaching work about leadership and self-organisation.
Lisa studied chemistry at the University of Tübingen. During her
PhD, she worked on the analytics of natural products and spent
three months as guest researcher at the National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST).

Dr. David Giltner has commercialized photonics technolo-
gies for optical communications, remote sensing, scientific
instrumentation, and industrial combustion monitoring ap-
plications. He is from the United States and has a PhD in
Physics. In 2010 he published "Turning Science into Things
People Need," which explored the careers of 10 scientists
who have built successful careers in the private sector. In
2017 he founded the company TurningScience to help sci-
entists learn the non-technical skills they need to transition
effectively into industry careers.
Prof. Dr. Max von Delius (PhD) is a W3 Professor for
Organic Chemistry at the University of Ulm. He´s a
highly successful group leader since 2013. He received
funding from the Emmy-Noether programme of the
DFG as well as an ERC starting grant. His research in-
terests encompass the synthesis of functional organic
materials and the investigation of complex chemical
networks. As young professor (born 1982), he´s aware
of all the challenges that young group leaders in natural sciences face and addresses these in
an interactive setting.
Prof. Dr. Sven Hendrix worked in Berlin, Hamburg, London, Hama-
matsu (Japan) and Boston (USA) as medical doctor and researcher.
After his habilitation at the Charité in Berlin in 2007, he became full
professor for anatomy and cell biology at Hasselt University in Bel-
gium in 2008. As Director of the Doctoral School for Health & Life Sci-
ences he supports more than 100 PhD students and postdocs. As
Vice Director of the BIOMED Institute, he supervises the career de-
velopment of tenure track professors among other tasks.

Susanne Dranaz is German and Turkish. Born and raised in
Munich, Germany, she studied German and English Language,
History, Mathematics and Computer Science. During her stud-
ies she lead several development projects in Central America
carried out by volunteer university students. After writing her
diploma thesis in Oviedo, Spain, she joined an IT company,
where she led software development projects for several in-
dustries in Germany and the UK.
Her experiences with differences in both company and na-
tional cultures increased her interest in peopleware. She be-
came a softskills trainer, moderator, mediator, and coach. For
the last 20 years she has been helping companies and teams, university students and leaders
to refine their communication and conflict resolution skills, to reflect on their own cultural
imprints and attitudes and to work successfully across differences and distance.
Dr. habil. Alexander Schiller was a junior professor for inor-
ganic chemistry at the University of Jena (Germany). As inor-
ganic chemistry professor he broadened his portfolio in 2012
with the project Schiller & Mertens: teaching advanced re-
search skills, such as communication in science, team building
and leading competences and didactics and methodology in
university teaching. As former researcher and group leader Al-
exander knows the challenges of natural scientists and ad-
dresses them in an interactive setting.

Hello academia! Off to a great start
...best before 01. 07. 18
You recently started your PhD full of enthusiasm. However, an uneasy feeling creeps up
whenever you walk past one of the senior PhD students, who are in the process of writing
up. Do you hear them say, “If I knew that before” or “I wish I would have thought of” and think for yourself, “I hope this doesn´t happen to me, I hope I can get around their mistakes myself.” A PhD is too complex to ever be without complications. However, in this course we´ll try to work on our 'starter package' to survive in this new environment and to get a
broad set of experiences and networks from your PhD.
Your PhD: more than just lab

How to row the boat? - Leadership skills
Leadership has undergone changes- in parallel with our work environments. Flatter hierar-
chies, project work in a matrix structure and more rapid changes of assignments, locations
and colleagues are but some of the new challenges we all face. Interpersonal skills become
ever more important when leading a team or a project: for motivation, conflict resolution or
work delegation.
Duration: 2-3 days

Staff selection, biases and stereotypes
Most hiring processes are hotbeds of biases. Very often, we try to hire clones of ourselves,
either deliberately or subconsciously. This in turn destroys any notion of wanting to hire ‘the best’. In this workshop, we´ll identify steps in the hiring process, where these biases arise and how we could possibly eliminate them in order to really hire 'the best'. It´s a relevant ex-
ercise for everyone interested in how biases influence our work, not just hiring managers.
We won´t go into endless debates about nurture vs. nature, we won´t try to dig out what is
really down to biological differences. Instead, we´ll have a clear focus on practical aspects,
which can be used to improve our work environments. We´ll look at stereotypes and biases
and how these influence our behaviour and how we´re perceived by our environment. The
end result will be actionable steps to change our hiring practices. Much of the knowledge we
gain about biases and stereotypes can be used in other work contexts as well.

How to get research funding from industry
Adding research funding from the
private sector is a lucrative option
that is not pursued by many re-
searchers. One of the biggest rea-
sons this option is overlooked is a
lack of understanding about how
companies function and how an ac-
ademic researcher might bridge the
culture differences to make useful
connections. This workshop pro-
vides practical advice on how to
identify and build valuable private
sector research collaborations.
Private sector funding overview
- What makes a successful collaboration?
- Balancing basic and applied research
Academia vs industry
- How does one navigate the culture differ-
ences?
- Where can you bring unique value to the
private sector?

Negotiation
Negotiation does not only happen
on the flea market. It is one of the
most important professional skills
for virtually every type of profes-
sion. And it gets more important
the further you move up the lad-
der. Negotiations happen every-
where. If you happen to wear a
three-piece suit at work it´s even
more likely than if you have to slip
into a chicken dress before work.
And salary is by far not the only
thing you´ll negotiate about
throughout your (professional) life:
how to distribute the work in your
lab, how to handle noise in your of-
fice and how to get your kid to eat
his veggies. All these more or less fierce conversations constitute negotiations.
But is there anything you can do about your negotiation skills? Yes! Negotiating is a matter
of practice alike many others skills and can be learned. Many of the characteristics of a good
negotiator are actually quite sympathetic ones and have nothing to do with ripping people
off in shabby deals. The skills you need are building relationships, good communication and
a solid preparation.

- Is it only the salary we´re talking about?
- In which situations and when is negotiat-
ing appropriate?
Negotiations for conflict resolution
- Getting the buy-in from the other side to
form lasting agreements
- Tactics vs. open cards: when to choose
which route?
Hard vs. soft
- Do you need to be 'tough' to 'win' or is
there a better way?
- Does the relationship to the other side
have to suffer?
- Can I be assertive to my interests without
being 'bossy'?
Gender- and institutional perspective
- Why are women earning less?
- Can women ask for more without paying a
social price?
- "Why should I pay women more if they
don´t ask for it?" The institutional perspec-
tive on the gender wage gap: overcoming
the zero-sum game
This seminar can be combined with the conflict management part of "How to row the boat?
- Leadership skills" (p. 19).
This course can be combined with the courses “Convincing and debating” (p. 34) and “Oral presentation” (p. 36) to give the integrated 4-day programme "Argumentation and presen-
tation" (p. 7-8).
This course can be used in the context of gender: why are women still earning less than men?
We can give a special focus to biases and stereotypes. For PhD students and postdocs: how
can we play this playing field more successfully? For PIs: How can we change the playing field
towards fairer negotiations and do we want this at all?

Time- life- and career management (for part-timers)
Every week has 7 days, 168 hours or 10080 minutes…. a lot of time to do a lot of things! Still, many of us suffer from the feeling of always having too little of it. You might not give it
enough thought on how you actually want to spend it and how to distribute it between your
career, family, friends and hobbies. These are also no easy questions with answers to be
found in a text book- the 'ideal time schedule' is simply too different from one person to the
other.
During this seminar we will analyse the individual schedules of the week and provide tools
and ideas to make best use of your time investment. Furthermore, we will discuss how to
balance science and life in different contexts and how to plan your days in a flexible work en-
vironment.
The aim is not only to work more efficiently and to reduce personal stress, but also to be
more satisfied and successful in your career and your personal life.

Storytelling and science communication
We all enjoy a good
story, whether it's dur-
ing a presentation, a
job interview, a con-
ference coffee break,
or simply during a pub
night. Why? It acti-
vates the same areas
of our brain that
would be activated during the actual event. Consequently, audiences feel so much more en-
gaged when they hear a narrative about your real-life experiences as researcher, how you
finally chased that superbug down, or when you explain your research through story. Much
more than if you monotonously talk them through a list of bullet points on a power point
slide. But to be understood when talking about one's own research work, let alone to speak
about yourself, is not easy for many researchers. During this seminar, you learn to enchant a
wide range of audiences with science stories and to captivate a lay audience with complex
research results. Because… speaking science can be magical!
The power of storytelling
- Why do we need story?
- When to use story?
- What we can learn from TED talks
- Explain science through story

- Using the ABT model
- Why stories need conflict

33
Convincing & debating
Scientists are often in the situation that they need to discuss their findings or their need for
extra funding or resources with other members of the scientific community or with the gen-
eral public. The ability to express yourself in a concise and clear manner, using strong argu-
ments, is therefore of utmost importance.
This interactive seminar with real life scenarios, public speaking exercises, argumentation ex-
amples and debates, will help participants to successfully engage in various interactions with
other scientists and non-scientists. Your Q&A sessions will never be the same again. You will
convince your boss to buy this fantastic Mass Spec. You will disarm other people´s argu-
ments against you now that you can look behind their facade. And last but not least, you will
win on paper (e.g. research- and grant- proposals)!

Oral presentation
There are many ways in which
scientists communicate their
work: publications, poster or
oral presentations or via indi-
vidual conversations. In terms
of leaving a deep impression
about your work and yourself,
oral presentations are a very
powerful way. However, many
scientists are scared of the
prospect to stand in front of a
large and potentially critical
audience to present their
work. They rush through the
presentations, clinging onto
overloaded slides and miss a
crucial chance to show them-
selves in a positive light.

Navigating social media as a scientist
Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, by now, are no longer a new thing. Also for scientists, social
media platforms have become an integral networking tool to connect globally, exchange re-
search ideas and results and advance careers. But, what’s a proper way for scientists to
make use of these platforms?
In this workshop part, you will gain a better understanding on the current state of digital sci-
ence communication. In detail, you will learn how scientists may integrate social media into
their activities — in a helpful and productive way. We advocate a reflected media usage that
keeps a close eye on how and when it is recommended for you to ‘go digital’.

Culture at work
A more global economy, international work environments and the increase of women hold-
ing leadership positions, all have an impact on our work environment as well as our society
as a whole. This diversification of teams brings a lot of advantages, but also challenges.
Hence, a good understanding of each other’s communication styles and behaviours is one of the keys to professional success.
The objective of this seminar is to help dealing with the differences in thinking, feeling and
acting of people around the globe. You will experience that though the variety of people’s mind is enormous, we can recognise structure in this variety that can serve as a basis for bet-
ter understanding.
