Parent Reading Session I would like to thank Mrs Rosconi and Mrs O’Reilly for their very informative session on reading last Tuesday. Although I was in Bathurst with Year 5 when the session took place the school has received a number of very positive emails from parents.

Thank you for your kind emails and we will be holding additional information sessions for parents later on in the year.

2017 Kinder information eveningTomorrow we will be holding our first information session for parents who are looking to enrol their child in Kindergarten at Elanora Heights in 2017. The session will take place at 7pm in the school library.

More information about the disco can be found in the P&C section of the newsletter.

Orange Fruito/VegoDoes your child have a favourite orange coloured fruit or vegetable? Place it in their lunch box so they can be part of our Orange Fruito/Vego this Wednesday.

Public Speaking competitionI would like to wish the best of luck to those students competing in our Public Speaking this Thursday and give a special thank you to Miss Powell who has organised the Public Speaking in the school.

Is your child making friends at school?Kids who get on at school tend to be more engaged in learning. Here are some ideas on how to help your child with social skills: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/development/how-friendships-boost-your-childs-learning

Did you know? There are new arrangements for parents or carers who engage the services of a private tutor or coach and have an important role to play in helping to keep their children safe.

From 1st April 2016 adults who provide private tuition or coaching services to children need to obtain a new Working With Children Check (WWCC).

... Zone Cross Country.....|.....Ms WidmanCongratulations to all our amazing Zone Cross country competitors!

Last Friday our zone students travelled to Rat Park to participate in the annual Zone Cross Country event. Nine schools in our zone competed on the day with 54 students in each race.

Elanora Heights had a very successful day with every participant striving to do their best and achieving results they should be proud of. Overall our school finished in 5th place for the event with a handicap position of 2nd place. Twelve of our students finished in the top twenty places in their race with five students qualifying for the Regional Cross Country in June.

It was a pleasure taking all these students to the zone carnival, their responsible and respectful behaviour, positive attitude and level of sportsmanship is to be commended. They were all fantastic representatives for our school!

I would like to extend a very special thanks to the parents who marshalled a station at the event - the day could not go ahead without all the fantastic parent volunteers. Also a big thank you to other parents and family members who were able to attend and cheer on the runners. Finally, thank you to Mr Rosconi for also attending and assisting with the organisation on the day and to Mr Brooks for setting up all the equipment.

A special mention to these students who finished in the top 10:12/13 Years: Sofia R (4th) Sienna H (5th)11 Years: Keeley H (1st) Xavier B (4th)10 years: Sophie C (7th) Billy H (1st)

Good luck at the regional carnival Sofia, Sienna, Keeley, Xavier and Billy.

... Year Six Visits Canberra, Our Nation’s Capital...|...Ms PittYear Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital.

Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist all families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards these costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Elanora Heights Public School appreciates this support.

VOLUNTEERS WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKNew Working With Children/Declaration Updates From The DEC (As of April 26th 2016)

This new update is relevant for new/potential volunteers who have not already completed a declaration and provided 100 points of ID at our school.

If you currently volunteer at our school and have not provided 100 points of ID or completed a NEW declaration you need to complete the new declaration checks.

This volunteer declaration does not need to be redone annually.

For any new volunteers, we have the new Appendix 5 declaration forms available at the school office. Please be sure to bring in your 100 points of ID (originals please).

The easiest way to provide 100 points is a current passport or birth cert = 70 points and a drivers licence = 40 points. Volunteers who do not need to hold a Working with Children Check (WWCC) ClearanceThe majority of parents and close relatives* who volunteer with their child(ren)’s school are exempt under the WWCC regulations and do not have to obtain a WWCC clearance. HOWEVER, the Department requires these volunteers to complete Appendix 5 (2016) declaration and provide 100 points of proof of identity. Volunteers who are required to hold a WWCC clearanceAny adult who is not a parent or close relative of a student at the school where the volunteer is working, but will have direct contact with children, is required to obtain WWCC AND provide the office with 100 points of proof of identity.

To apply for a WWCC volunteer number please click on the link below:http://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/working-with-children/working-with-children-check

*The term “close relative” of a child is broadly defined in the legislation as including parents, step-parents (including a de facto partner), grandparents, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, siblings and step-siblings. In the case of an Aboriginal person, a close relative may also be a member of the extended family or kin.

READING INFORMATION SESSIONWe had a fantastic turnout for our reading information session and morning tea last Tuesday. Mrs Rosconi and Mrs O’Reilly provided parents with practical information on how to help your child read at home.

The overall impression that parents felt were..... we are on the right track, but I picked up a few new tips.... the videos in the presentation gave me a

real visual understanding on how to assist my child..... I now understand the theory behind the way a child learns to read, this will assist me when I’m helping at home. There was a great supportive feel amongst the parents, who all share a common goal. Big thanks to Mrs Rosconi and Mrs O’Reilly for taking the time to prepare and present this informative session.

LIVE LIFE WELL @ SCHOOL

ORANGE FRUITO/VEGO –Wednesday 25th May.....|.....Jenny CullenPlease send orange fruits or vegetables on May 25th for our next Rainbow Fruito-Vego.

Each term we highlight the nutritional value of one or two particular colours, and the importance of eating a wide range of fresh foods. With Year 5 just back from their Gold excursion and new season oranges and mandarins arriving, orange seemed the colour of the month. Beyond the obvious juicy citrus favourites, how about paw-paw, rock melon, persimmon or fuji fruit? This is your chance to plug vegies as well - carrot sticks are generally a favourite. While Fruito-Vego is usually meant to be only RAW fresh food, cooked sweet potato or pumpkin is welcome on Wednesday to increase the range of foods the children taste and see. Nutritional information below was provided by Martha Leonard, ex-Elanora parent and nutritionist.

FRUITO-VEGOORANGE FOODSThe orange colour of fruits and vegetables is derived from a pigment called carotenoid. Some carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin) are

provitamin A because they can be converted to retinol (a form of vitamin A) in the body. Here some good reasons for including orange fruits/vegetables in your diet: • Vitamin A is essential for growth and development, immune system function and vision. • Dietary carotenoids intake has been associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease. • Carotenoids are found in all layers of the skin and contribute to normal skin colour. They also enhance the perception of healthy skin.

Did you know that carotenoids are best absorbed with fat in a meal? (e.g. add a dash of olive oil on your steamed carrots). In season now: pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots, mandarins, oranges.

This winter, try baked sweet potato with your Sunday roast. Put the entire sweet potato (including the skin) on a baking tray in the oven, bake until cooked (i.e. until flesh is tender). Serve slices of your sweet potato with your roast (the skin will come off easily after baking).

Thank you for your support! It has been a busy time at the canteen, but our menu changes have begun to take shape and grow in popularity. Thank you to all our staff and volunteers for working even harder than usual to make these changes happen. And thank you to you, our customers. You have been patient during this time, swapped to munch monitor and tried our new menu items.

Highlighted in today’s newsletter are our snack boxes that can be pre-ordered for recess. They are made up of bite-sized pieces of fruit, vegetables, dairy and a ‘treat’. They are a ‘green light’ menu item and feature a colour theme based on each of Elanora’s sport houses.

We have also brought in fun and free stickers of smiling fruits and vegetables. Children will be able to pick a sticker when they buy a piece of fruit. We hope

that this encourages ‘green light’ purchases and increases the kid’s interest in the healthy changes we are making.

Also new to our menu as winter approaches - Butter Chicken on Wednesdays and Penne Bolognaise on Thursdays. I don’t know about you, but we will be moving our canteen day of the week around so we can try all of these new, in-store made menu items!

The ‘Name the Canteen’ competition closed last week. The canteen committee will be meeting to decide on a winner. Stay tuned! We should have a winner announced in the next week or two. The winner will see their canteen name hand painted and mounted above our counter. Their class will also be rewarded with a rainbow fruito-vego platter.

Please consider volunteering at the canteen so we can continue the push to sell healthy, in-store made food to our kids. Drop by the canteen to chat to Erku or Karen. There you can fill out a form with your availability – even an hour can help! Alternatively contact the canteen on 9913 2721 or Erku at [email protected].

Watch this space each week during the School Sport season. Here you will see the subject matter from the Games and Sports strand of the Physical Education Syllabus. School Sport teachers select a continuing variety from this subject matter over the season. Students are able to apply these movement skills in games and sports. Of course, this requires communication, cooperation, decision making and observation of rules. Let’s get moving....

SCHOOL SPORT.....|.....Ms SherwoodApologies: Last week we inadvertently ommitted including that two sessions of school sport will be taken by an EHPS teacher as well as a coach from the Manly Warringah Basketball Association.

Years Three-Six School Sport students will participate in two sessions this term which will be team taught alongside the EHPS teacher with Development Officers from the Australian Rugby Union.

…. all scripture classes are taught by volunteers? At Elanora, our scripture students can pick Protestant or Catholic religious studies. Dedicated volunteers teach the classes. Most of the volunteers do not have students at the school.

Students are taught in classroom sizes with children from their own grade. During first term, Protestant and Catholic classes went back to basics and set the foundations of their Christian beliefs. Who Jesus is and what is his relationship to God. Easter then moved into focus, with the retelling of Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection. Discussion topics in the coming terms include acts of kindness, obedience and creation. Religious classes are taught from a church approved curriculum. Protestant classes use God Space – please see their website godspace.org.au for further details. Catholic classes follow a teaching manual and also provide students with a workbook that comes home at the end of the year.

…. RFF stands for Relief from Face to Face teaching?Every full time teacher employed by the Department of Education is entitled to 2 hours relief from classroom duties each week. Teachers can use this time for parent interviews, marking student work, preparing lessons and liaising with other teachers. Students meanwhile will be with an RFF teacher and will participate in science, computers, physical education and library lessons.
