SUNDAY WORSHIP
Sunday, March 29, 2020 – 9:45 a.m.
For the past few years, we have taken advantage of the 5th Sundays of the month and have
worshipped as one body. Typically, we have gathered for a shortened worship service in the
sanctuary and then eaten breakfast together in the fellowship hall. Our 5th Sunday celebrations
were halted during the remodel project because we had no where to eat together. Now that the
fellowship hall is finished, we are planning a twist. March 29th we will hold our worship
service in the fellowship hall. Following the service, we will then share an extended coffee
hour together.
For the past months, we have talked about the many and various ways we can use our new
space for mission. I am going to talk more about that on the 29th. Not only will we talk about mission, but also
experience worship together as mission in this new space.
As more groups have been using this space, positive feedback continues to pour in. People who have attended
The Gathering Place meals, Connexion events, Youth activities, and fellowship time have all been very
pleased with the renovation. It’s an exciting time!
The Season of Lent is fast approaching.
Ash Wednesday will arrive next week, February 26th
, 2020.
We will be exploring a series by Adam Hamilton, entitled, “Simon Peter: Flawed yet Faithful Disciple”.
Peter was not rich or educated, but was familiar with hard work. He was quick-tempered and impetuous, but
possessed a passion that would change the world. He left everything to follow his teacher, yet struggled with
doubt and fear. We will follow and learn from Peter, through the highs and lows. We can identify with much
of Peter’s journey. And we have much to learn and be inspired by this full throttle follower of Jesus Christ.
Come, join the journey! Lenten Connexion (Ash Wednesday) begins with dinner on
Wednesday, February. 26th at 6:00 p.m.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Mark

SERVE – OR BE SERVED!
The Care Team of OSLC is an active ministry of
over forty people. Our prayer is to become more
active stepping in to help those who have a short
term need.
We meet the needs of our Christian family when
someone makes a request for help – whether it be
for prayer (supplication or praise), meals,
transportation, a visit, an errand, a small home
repair, an encouraging phone call, or an
encouraging email. Requests may come from
anyone – individually, a friend seeing a need,
church office, pastor, or YOU watching out for
your Christian brothers and sisters! We wait for a
request to be servant hands! All it takes is a phone
call or email to Lois Stahley (206.972.2266 or
[email protected]) or Linda in the church
office (360.629.3767) to put the wheels in
motion.
The Care Team is always blessed when someone
wants to join our ministry. If you are one of those
people, please let Lois know.
“Whoever wants to become great among you
must first be your servant, and whoever wants to
be first must be your slave – just as the Son of
Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and
to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Thank You!
To our church family,
Thank you for your support, concern and prayers for my son Kent and his wife Marina during her illness. She joined our Lord on Sunday, January 26th. Also, a special thanks to our Sunshine Committee for the loving and beautiful notes to Marina. They meant so much to her.
God’s blessings to all of you. Sue Fosnes
Thank You!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to Pastor Mark, our Care Team, the Christmas carolers (3 generations!), and each and every one of you who thought of and prayed for Gary and I as we traveled the rocky road of illnesses and death, and then healing. Every phone call, visit and card was like a hug from God that I recalled, revisited and re-read over and over.
May our loving and gracious Lord continue to bless you all Real Good!
Thank you, Sandy Schreiner

A Lenten history lesson
Though the date of Easter varies, the majority of
the Lenten season occurs during March. In fact,
the word Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon words
lenctentid (meaning “March”) and lencten
(meaning “spring”).
The first reference to Lent dates back to 325 AD,
in one of the 20 canons decreed at the council of
Nicaea. By the eighth century, Christians started
observing Lent, and a 10th-century monk named
Aelfric connected the use of ashes and “the
Lenten fast” to the pre-Easter period.
Lent lasts 40 days to represent Jesus’ time in the
wilderness, when he was tempted by the devil.
The six Sundays that occur between Ash
Wednesday and Easter Sunday aren’t counted as
part of Lent; instead, as the traditional day of
worship, they’re considered “mini-Easters.”
Stanwood High School presents:
“Godspell”
The musical “Godspell” runs March 6, 7, and 12, 13,
and 14 at Stanwood High School in PAC Auditorium,
at 7:00 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door: $10 for adults, and

Making Ukrainian Pysanky
HISTORY
Well over 2,000 years ago, before the time of
Christ, people were carrying on the custom of
decorating eggs. Folk were of the belief that great
power is embodied in the egg, and they decorated
eggs in the spring to celebrate the warming of the
sun as it brought new joy and vigor to life after the
dark winter months.
Pysanky, Ukrainian for decorated Easter eggs, are
raw multi-colored eggs which are intended as
ornaments to be kept indefinitely. The root word
pysaty means to write. With the introduction of
Christianity to Ukraine in 988 A.D., the “sun”
became “Son” and was absorbed into the Christian
celebration of Christ’s resurrection. The most
important holiday on the church calendar in
Ukraine is Easter. The designs which were used
had significant meanings to both the creator of the
egg and to the person who received it. The eggs
are made and given much as we give greeting
cards, bringing peace, beauty, creativity, harmony,
and good wishes. There are many symbols, many
meanings, but one thing is certain: There is no
life without art, and the Pysanky is a folk art
which has been the pulse of the Ukrainian nation,
with the egg expressing power and love.

I request you to pray for favor for the school in Ethiopia. There is a great need for education, but a few leaders in the town of Haik are against the school. There are other obstacles as well. We hope everything will come together so the school can open in September. Bruce was in Ethiopia October – December to help work on setting up the school.
When I joined Bruce in Ethiopia over Christmas break, we were invited to the home of a former Muslim man named Mohammed. Mohammed continues to wear Muslin clothing and his home is set up the same way other Muslim homes are set up.
Twenty years ago Mohammed was an Islamic scholar and teacher. He studied the Koran as well as the Bible so that he could find fault with the Bible. He was so important in the Muslim world, that he was even sent to Pakistan to study Jihad. He returned to Ethiopia and began buying goods and products in Dubai. He brought the products back into Ethiopia to sell. Mohammed always paid the custom agents with a bribe so he would be allowed to bring the products back into Ethiopia. It was at this time that the Lord spoke to him through Deuteronomy 17:17 and John 17:17. He knew the Bible having had studied it to compare it to the Koran. God used this to reveal Himself to Mohammed. The Lord told him that he would lose all of his products, but said “you are Mine.” The next day he lost all of his products just as the Lord had said. After a few other simple events, Mohammed gave his life to Christ.
Other Muslims in the town wanted to kill him. The Synod (church headquarters of the Lutheran Church in Ethiopia) hid him in their compound for one year. Mohammed lost his family, and after a year moved to Addis Ababa (the capital of Ethiopia) because it was safer for him there. Soon after, he moved to Sudan. Since he was fluent in the Arabic language and knew the Koran, he was successful in sharing about the saving power of Jesus to Sudanese Muslims. People knew he was an expert in the Koran and would come to ask him questions. He would use the Koran to point people to Jesus. In fact, 78% of the Koran has connections to the Bible. The Koran speaks of someone who was crucified and this story (along with other portions of the Koran) gave him opportunities to share the truth of Jesus. After several years, he moved back to Ethiopia and continues to share the Gospel. Bruce told him about the significance of numbers in the Bible and that the number 17 represents victory. Mohammed had tears in his eyes as he shared that he had won 17 people to Jesus during 2019, the first year since his return to Ethiopia. Submitted by Pat Brekhus

Altar Flowers in Lent
Throughout the month of March, altar flowers will be absent. The stands on either side of the altar are left bare
on purpose, as we center our attention on Christ and His final journey to the cross. Flowers will return on
Easter Sunday when we celebrate Christ’s resurrection and the promise of eternal life.
The Flower Chart is newly framed and hung in the narthex above the guest book. You are invited
to sign up to donate flowers in celebration of special occasions or in honor of loved ones. Because
we are completely dependent on contributions from the congregation for altar flowers, a donation
of $30.00 is appreciated and may be put in the offering plate.
Flowers are arranged by Candyce Sylling, Candace Spong and Lina Richert.
When a new baby is welcomed into our congregation, a rose is placed on the altar to honor the
occasion.
If you know of someone who has recently had a birth in their family, please let the office know!

FELLOWSHIP REMODEL CELEBRATION
What a day of celebration‒‒at the January Congregation Meeting, we had an opportunity to celebrate the remodel. Many folks were thanked for their contribution of time and talent (see list below), but the biggest thank you has to go to YOU, the members of the congregation, who stepped up and endorsed the remodel and provided the funds that made it happen. Without that support, we couldn’t have started on the journey…Thank you for the initial gifts and those that are ongoing!!
The following members were recognized as having contributed hours of planning, as well as hours of labor toward the remodel project: Marv Hansen who led the process, Nate Schwartz who oversaw the sound system, and those responsible for plans, finance, design, media/sound, stone wall, electrical finishes, concrete slab, beam touchup, and kitchen coordination: Jon Stoneman, John Holmes, Jim Neher, Carol Curtis, Jaimi McCall, Jerry Crowfoot, Ken Christoferson, Annette Bowden, Sheri Durham, Linda Hammer, Karim Khoury, Dee Jonson, Ramona Snowden, Barb Sickler, Lina Richert, Dewayne Libengood, Steve Dams, Ed Snowden, Duane Holtmann, Bob Hansen, Erik Christoferson, Rose King, Bruce Richert, Linda Haskins, and Barb Christoferson.
There was also a crew that moved everything out and back in again, including the kitchen. That crew included: Jerry Crofoot, Duane Holtmann, Marv Hansen, Ric Williams, Garrett Williams, Rich Huyler, Bob Hansen, Charlie Sylling, Bruce Richert, Barb Christoferson, Linda Haskins, Candyce Sylling, Carol Curtis, Martha Huyler, Barb Tetlow, Dale Tetlow, Donna Cook, and Sheri Durham.
In addition, there were two separate gifts that were above and beyond the budgeted plan. The beautiful back-lit cross was designed and commissioned by Barb Sickler as a memorial gift in memory of Jim Sickler, who was a very active member of our congregation prior to his death. To provide the striking backdrop for the cross, there was an anonymous gift to cover the cost of the stonework.
So many members and friends of the congregation were involved from the beginning to the end—providing prayers, funds, and labor. Thank you all!!
