Our Manufacturing Training ProgramGeneral Cable offers an exciting and rewarding Manufacturing Training Program (MTP) for engineering, operations management or business management graduates who desire an intellectually stimulating career in manufacturing management with a progressive Fortune 500 company and global leader in its field.

The objective of our Manufacturing Training Program is to assist graduates in becoming successful General Cable Plant Managers within 10 years.

This two-year program begins in mid-June of each year. Each participant will be assigned to two of General Cable’s manufacturing plants in the following U.S. locations for his or her assignments:

• Malvern, Arkansas; DuQuoin, Illinois; or Marshall, Texas (Energy Cables Plants)

• Marion, Indiana; Willimantic, Connecticut; Franklin, Massachusetts; Manchester, New Hampshire; or Lincoln, Rhode Island (Industrial & Specialty Cables Plants)

• Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; Jackson, Tennessee; or Altoona, Pennsylvania (Communications Cables & Assemblies Plants)

While General Cable will only utilize its U.S. locations for the training program, the company does have international manufacturing plants located in Mexico, Canada, Europe, Africa, Central and South America, Asia and New Zealand.

During the two-year program, MTP participants will report to local plant management, be given hands-on, day-to-day manufacturing responsibilities and will successfully complete a variety of meaningful projects in cost reductions, process improvements, capital expenditures and other areas. Assignments of increasing levels of responsibility will be as follows:

• The first 12 months at one location, where each participant will spend: four months in scheduling, production control and materials management positions; four months in a manufacturing engineering position; and four months in a maintenance or quality position

• The remaining 12 months at a second location in production supervision with direct line supervision

In addition to these assignments, several multi-day classroom sessions will be conducted during the two years for added training in our Lean Six Sigma methodology, supervisory skills, team-building, presentation skills, conflict resolution and other business-related topics. Participants will attend these classroom sessions with associates from our Engineering Technology Program (ETP) and our Sales Training Program (STP), as well as other high-potential General Cable associates. Here, they will have the opportunity to socialize and share their program experiences with one another as well as with General Cable leaders and plant management. Some of the programs will be conducted at the Company’s corporate headquarters, while others will be held at a General Cable manufacturing facility.

Participants who successfully complete the program at the end of the second year, which also includes becoming a certified General Cable Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt, will be offered a full-time manufacturing assignment at a General Cable U.S.-based plant. Each MTP graduate will also be asked to serve as a mentor for the next two years for one of the new incoming manufacturing trainees.

Why Choose Our Manufacturing Training Program? The General Cable Manufacturing Training Program is an ideal opportunity for engineering graduates in search of a rewarding career in manufacturing with a leading Fortune 500 company. General Cable differentiates itself from other leading companies in the following ways:

• As a market leader, we have global reach, scalability and a diverse market base with robust fundamentals. Our financial footing is firm, our operating systems allow us to function as One Company regionally, and our culture is performance-driven.

• Our sound balance sheet, excellent financial performance and experienced management team give us the fiscal strength and management know-how to continue with strategic investments in acquisitions, product development, capital expenditures and all other necessary tools to ensure a continued strong leadership position in our industry.

• Our regional structure is nimble and assures that each participant in our Manufacturing Training Program will have first-hand personal exposure to our management team. Our assignments provide participants with opportunities to truly make a difference in our Company while enjoying an exciting, intellectually stimulating career.

Applying Your Skills and Understanding Wire & Cable ManufacturingAs a General Cable manufacturing specialist, you will spend considerable time working with associates at our various plants to improve our product designs and processes. It is essential that you have a thorough understanding of the General Cable manufacturing environment and how you may apply your engineering or operations skills.

Our Manufacturing ProcessEach General Cable manufacturing plant is different, but they also have many things in common. The majority of our North American plants manufacture wire and cable with sizes ranging from 0.01 inch to one inch in diameter for insulated wire, all the way up to six inches in diameter for three or more insulated conductors that are cabled together and jacketed. Generally, the smaller cable is produced at a communications plant, medium-sized cable at an industrial & specialty plant, and the larger cable at an energy plant. All of the cable-producing plants are very material-intensive, with an average of 70% of production cost in raw materials.

Some General Cable plants draw their own wire from copper and aluminum rod to smaller gauge sizes, while others buy wire and fiber optic glass to exact specifications. Next, the copper, aluminum or fiber optic conductors are processed through high-capacity extrusion equipment, which first applies the insulation to the wire. For multi-stranded cable, the wire is then processed through a series of pairing and cabling operations, with the final assembly of wires being encased within exterior jacketing via a secondary extrusion process.

Following the manufacture of a cable, the finished product is subjected to a series of extensive and demanding quality checks to ensure its safety and integrity. For larger applications, the finished product is shipped on large reels containing as much as 40,000 feet of cable and weighing up to 20,000 pounds. For smaller applications, such as retail sales and industrial distribution, the smaller gauge cable is cut to lengths as short as 50 feet, packaged and provided to major national retailers or distributors such as The Home Depot or Graybar for resale purposes.

General Cable also operates one U.S.-based and two Mexico-based plants dedicated to assemblies operations. These locations receive cable from other General Cable plants for conversion into automotive ignition wire sets or other wire harnesses and assemblies. The cable is cut to length, terminated, put into the appropriate packaging and shipped direct to major automotive aftermarket retailers such as AutoZone or to major OEMs such as GE Medical Systems and Delphi.

The typical General Cable plant is between 100,000 and 400,000 square feet, but one of our international plants is over one million square feet, and three U.S. plants are over 600,000 square feet. Most plants operate 24 hours a day, five to seven days per week, depending on demand. Our plants are a mixture of union and non-union, but labor-management relations are very good at all locations.

Each plant is run by a Plant Manager, who has full operating responsibility for the plant. The Plant Manager reports to one of three Manufacturing Vice Presidents, all of whom report to the Senior Vice President of North American Operations. The SVP of Operations reports directly to the President and CEO of General Cable North America. Staff support at the plants varies, but typically there are 25 to 40 salaried staff members. Typical direct reports to a Plant Manager include managers for: Manufacturing, Engineering, Maintenance, Materials, Quality, Human Resources and Environmental Health & Safety. The Plant Finance Manager is a “dotted-line” report to the Plant Manager.

Our Manufacturing CultureManufacturing excellence is the bedrock of General Cable’s industry leadership and performance. Through our continuous, comprehensive and coordinated efforts toward safety, quality, productivity and service, we have identified three critical traits that are characteristics in our manufacturing plants:

• A common focus throughout General Cable on associate safety: Our Zero & Beyond vision guides a comprehen-sive view of work conditions, policies and practices with one constant goal – zero accidents – because nothing else is acceptable.

• An Operator-Led Process Control (OLPC) environment: General Cable leadership strongly believes that the correct way to operate a plant is to empower associates with responsibility and authority at the operator level. By providing substantial and ongoing training to our associates, we ensure that our operators produce the very best wire and cable products with minimal supervision and direction. The OLPC philosophy ensures an efficient manufacturing process that places emphasis on the value of our dedicated, trustworthy, well-trained production associates.

• Lean Six Sigma manufacturing techniques: General Cable has combined Lean thinking with proven Six Sigma tools under a common umbrella called Lean Six Sigma. We believe our integration of these progressive Lean Six Sigma tools is key to our competitiveness. We apply a variety of these manufacturing techniques throughout all of our plants in an ongoing effort to produce more with less and have no degradation of quality. Company-wide, we have certified Master Blackbelts, Blackbelts, Greenbelts and Lean Technicians who put Lean Six Sigma to work every day. The Company is dedicated to the Lean Six Sigma process, offering numerous internal and external training programs to our associates. Ongoing training is also provided to all our associates who wish to obtain Blackbelt, Greenbelt or Lean Technician certification status.

“General Cable’s structure is a model that requires strong plant leaders. Each Plant Manager must be a self-starter with a constant agenda for continuous improvement; an in-depth understanding of the business such that the right structure and the right people are deployed; an energy level and attention to detail that routinely delivers the forecasted outcomes; the mental discipline, persistence and confidence to effectively function within our organizational matrix; the vision and leadership to revolutionize the shop floor using Lean and Six Sigma tools; the passion to create an Operator-Led Process Control (OLPC) environment; and the commitment to achieve all of this in the safest possible work environment for our associates.”

• A common focus throughout General Cable on associate safety: Our Zero & Beyond vision guides a comprehensive view of work conditions, policies and practices with one constant goal – zero accidents – because nothing else is acceptable.
