2 + 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

Maryland Art Place (MAP) inspires, supports, and encourages artistic expression through innovative programming, exhibitions, and educational opportunities while recognizing the powerful impact art can have on our community. MAP creates a dynamic environment for artists of our time to engage the public by nurturing and promoting new ideas. MAP has served as a critical resource for contemporary art in the Mid-Atlantic since 1981.

MAP IN 2013

In 2013 MAP offered seven exhibition experiences: In January, we produced Thousand Little Brothers, a solo

exhibition by Hasan Elahi exploring privacy and surveillance; We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Curators’ Incubator exhibition program with Jeremy Stern and his exhibit, Oasis Places; We continued the annual exhibition, Young Blood, our recent Masters of Fine Arts graduate show; and in the Fall, we teamed up with Kristen Hileman, Curator of Contemporary Art and Department Head at the Baltimore Museum of Art, on our Regional Juried Exhibition surveying artists from Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania.

FOR 33 YEARS MARYLAND ART PLACE (MAP) HAS CONTINUED TO BE A CRITICAL RESOURCE FOR THE CONTEMPORARY ART COMMUNITY, SERVING ARTIST AND PATRON ALIKE. WE ARE PROUD OF OUR RICH HISTORY; WHICH IN 2013 COMBINED A DIVERSE RANGE OF EXHIBITION AND PROGRAMMING EXPERIENCES.

In April MAP continued its annual free-hung spring benefit exhibition, Out of Order. In November MAP produced a Starlight Dinner, which was taken off-site to the Thames Street Wharf building. The dinner highlighted 16 Art Stars whose work centered on innovation and technology in contemporary art. Lastly, in December MAP launched a new affordable art sale, UNDER $500. This two-day sale featured both invited and juried artists, with works sold at a price-point of $500 or less. All three events directly benefited MAP’s programs, exhibitions and ongoing initiatives which are offered ‘free and open to the public’.

New Program Advisory Committee Members – Amy Boone-McCreesh, Jan Razauskas, Stewart Watson, and Ada Pinkston who served as our student seat.

Paul Shortt - MAP’s new Registry Coordinator and Program Assistant. Paul recently moved to Baltimore from the Midwest and is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an MFA in New Media Art.

New Board Trustees include Todd Harvey (Mission Media), Morgan Gilligan (Stewart Title,) Peter Kilpe (CyberPoint International), and Whit MacCuaig, MAP’s new Board Treasurer, (Chesapeake Real Estate Group)

MAP IN 2014

In 2014 we will embark on our 33rd year in a new, but familiar space - 218 West Saratoga Street. This beautiful 20,000 square foot building, located on the west side of Baltimore city, will once again act as home base for all MAP operations moving forward. The Saratoga Street building is also within the newly established Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District, which plays host to some wonderful cultural venues.

In our new space, in a new year, and in a new neighborhood, we remain committed to: supporting emerging/mid-career artists in the most professional and dynamic way possible; creating opportunities for Baltimore/Maryland regional artists; promoting the sale of original works of art; and bringing contemporary art experiences into the public realm. We are pleased to share some of our 2014 program highlights with you.

IMPRINT

YOUNG BLOOD

Light Touch will open on the International Pier of the BWI Airport from February 12 – June 22, 2014 and will include artwork by five artists who use photography to explore aspects of the physical world. The presenting artists are Chrystal Lebas (France/UK), Heidi Morstang (Norway/UK), Marja Pirila (Finland), Lynn Silverman (Baltimore, MD), and Frank Hallam Day (Washington, DC). Light Touch is curated by Liz Wells, Professor of Photographic Culture at Plymouth University in the UK, and is produced in partnership with The Society of Photographic Education Conference 2014 in Baltimore City, The Cultural Service of the Embassy of France and Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI).

In its third year, MAP’s IMPRINT Program will again highlight one singular, specific contemporary artist that is excelling in their selected media. IMPRINT is an annual print reproduction program that was initiated by the MAP staff in 2012.

The next installment of MAP’s Speakers’ Series, Young Blood Revisited, will bring back past participants of the annual summer Masters of Fine Art (MFA) exhibition, Young Blood. This exhibition has continually served as a launching pad for many of its participants over the past six years. Through Young Blood Revisited MAP will ask a handful of artists from each year to speak about their life and practice post MFA. Young Blood, the exhibition, will continue during the summer of 2014, surveying notable MFA work.

OUT OF ORDER

In its second year, MAP will bring temporary public art projects to the community. This year MAP is partnering with the Downtown Partnership (Hopkins Plaza) and Art Blocks (Baltimore Zoo)

MAP’s annual free-hung benefit exhibition, Out of Order will be held in April of 2014 in our new location on the west side of Baltimore city!

IMPACT+

Out of Order+

As we embark on 2014, we would like to thank all of the artists, contributors, volunteers and patrons who made 2013 a successful year. We are especially grateful to Suzi and David Cordish for their on-going support over the past two decades. We look forward to another productive year and are energized by our move to the west side. In 2014 we intend to present progressive programs, dynamic exhibitions and offer compelling opportunities for artists in our state and region.

See you at MAP!
