Ethiopia – Mega Birding Tour

Simply put, Ethiopia is hands-down one of Africa’s most productive and rewarding birding destinations! Our brand new 24-day Ethiopia Mega birding tour comprehensively covers this unique country, targeting every single endemic bird (Ethiopia has the second highest count of endemics on the continent). Over five-hundred species of birds and many rare mammals can be expected, and the ease of the birding is quite remarkable. Ethiopia is also one of Africa’s most rewarding photographic destinations.

In central Ethiopia, we explore massive Rift Valley lakes teeming with birds, moss-draped montane forests supporting a wide selection of endemics, the high Bale Mountains – home to the critically endangered Ethiopian Wolf, the impressive Jemma Valley and Awash National Park – a Mecca for game and bird watching in Ethiopia (home to an incredible six species of bustard!). Key Ethiopian bird species we will seek include Spot-breasted Lapwing, Blue-winged Goose, Rouget’s Rail, Wattled Ibis, Ankober Serin, Yellow-fronted Parrot, White-backed Black Tit and Abyssinian Woodpecker.

To find some of Ethiopia’s most sought after endemics, such as the fabled Ruspoli’s Turaco and enigmatic Stresemann’s Bush Crow, we will venture to remote corners of this ancient land (close to the Somali frontier at

Bogol Manyo and the Kenyan border at Yabello). In these significantly drier habitats of southern Ethiopia, we will be searching for birds unique to this region, including White-tailed Swallow, Archer’s (Sidamo) Lark, White-winged Collared Dove, Red-naped Bushshrike and Juba Weaver.

Aside from the many Ethiopian endemics, we also visit two off-the-beaten-track sites: Mega in the far south and Kafka-Shiraro National Park in the very north of the country. Highlights from these two locations include Masked Lark, Heuglin’s Bustard, the recently described Black-fronted Francolin, Donaldson-Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver, Star-spotted and Sombre Nightjar, Demoiselle Crane, White-headed Babbler, Egyptian Plover, Sahel Paradise Whydah and Sudan Golden Sparrow.

Gabon - Rainforest Birds & Mammals

Our Gabon – Rainforest Birds & Mammals birding tour takes in the bird-rich Leconi area of south-eastern Gabon, near the border with the Congo, as well as the fabulous Lope and Ivindo National Parks, where we will seek a plethora of monkeys, sounders of strikingly patterned Red River Hog, herds of Forest Elephant and Forest Buffalo and troops of Chimpanzee. We even have a chance of seeing Lowland Gorillas and Mandrill!

The birding is equally exceptional; we have a good chance of seeing Africa’s toughest and arguably most attractive bee-eaters – Black-headed and Rosy. Other star species we may see include the rare Black Guineafowl, Fiery-breasted Bushshrike, Shining-blue, Chocolate-backed and African Dwarf Kingfisher, little known Ja River Scrub Warbler, Black-casqued Hornbill, Finsch’s Francolin, Black-collared Bulbul, Congo Moor Chat, Black-chinned Weaver, Gosling’s Apalis, Violet-tailed Sunbird and Woodhouse’s Antpecker– to name just a few!

Gabon - Loango Extension The Loango Extension to our Gabon – Rainforest Birds & Mammals tour covers the very best birding and wildlife localities within the extensive Loango National Park. Birding highlights are plentiful and include some of Africa’s most seldom-seen and exotic species, such as White-crested Tiger Heron, African River Martin, Congo Serpent Eagle, Long-tailed Hawk, Forbes’s Plover, White-bellied Kingfisher, Loango Weaver, Bare-cheeked Trogon, both Vermiculated and Pel’s Fishing Owl, Bates’s Nightjar, Hartlaub’s Duck, African Finfoot and Black-headed Bee-eater. This fabulous reserve is also extremely scenic, with large areas of pristine lowland forest, tranquil, forest-lined rivers, pans and open grasslands. Within these beautiful habitats, our mammal possibilities include Lowland Gorilla, Forest Elephant, Forest Buffalo, Red-River Hog, Hippopotamus and a range of tropical monkeys.

Morocco - Atlas to Sahara in depth Morocco, with its breath-taking scenery, delicious food, rich history and fabulous birding, is an essential destination for all birders and travellers. As an independent country after French rule, few Muslim countries can offer such a friendly atmosphere, complimented by strong cultural beliefs and few restrictions on visitors, like Morocco. Interesting habitats are found in the various geo-physical regions, and vary from the high, snow-covered Atlas Mountains to low-lying woodlands and the red sand dunes of the great Sahara desert.

Cities and towns bustle with activity, where mud-walled buildings line souks (long narrow alleyways) that are filled with bazaars selling carpets and crafts, and laden with exotic spices. What’s more, Morocco is also home to numerous special birds and several North African endemics, including the beautiful Moussier’s Redstart, Tristram’s Warbler, Barbary Partridge, Levaillant’s Woodpecker, Fulvous Babbler, African Blue Tit and African Crimson-winged Finch. Our main target, however, is one of the world’s most endangered birds, the Northern Bald Ibis or Waldrapp – now restricted in the wild to only two colonies in Morocco. We take a pelagic trip off Agadir to see the Critically Endangered Balearic Shearwater and other oceanic species before heading into central and eastern Morocco.

Our time on the stony gravel plains and sandy deserts are liable to be rewarded with Pharaoh Eagle-Owl, dainty Cream-colored Courser, up to four species of sandgrouse, Desert Sparrow, African Desert Warbler and numerous larks, including Temminck’s, Maghreb, Thick-billed and the Western Palearctic’s most difficult species: Dupont’s Lark. Heading further north, we stop in the pine and oak woodlands near Ifrane for Atlas Pied Flycatcher before continuing to wetlands near Casablanca for the rare White-headed Duck, Moustached Warbler and recently split Western Swamphen. We complete our tour with an early morning trip to a known stakeout for Double-spurred Francolin.

Somaliland - Horn of Africa EndemicsIf the words ‘exploratory,’ ‘intrepid,’ ‘adventure’ and ‘discovery’ get your blood flowing when it comes to birding, then Somaliland surely ranks high on your list of target destinations. For years this region has been marred by internal conflict; however, Somaliland has recently become safe for travel, allowing access to a remarkable number of specialities that were, until recently, impossible to see.

Our tour will visit all of the very best sites in Somaliland and we can expect to come away with an impressive list of endemics and specials. One of the highlights will be birding the Daallo Forest area which still holds a fair amount of beautiful juniper forest. It is here that smart endemics such as Somali Golden-winged Grosbeak, Somali Thrush, Archer’s Buzzard and Warsangli Linnet occur while also being an excellent place to find the localised Somali Starling. The Ban Cade Plains are also on the agenda and give us an excellent opportunity of finding Somali Lark, Lesser Hoopoe-Lark, Somali Wheatear, Little Brown and Heuglin’s Bustards, Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark, Somali Courser and Spotted Sandgrouse. Another key location will be the thorn scrub and bush in the Burco area. Here range-restricted species such as Yellow-vented Eremomela, Red-naped Bushshrike, Scaly Chatterer, Somali Crombec, Arabian Warbler and the sought-after Collared Lark can all be found while time will

also be spent at a site near Berbera for Somali Pigeon and the extremely localised Sombre Rock Chat that favours lava-covered areas. Additional quality species include White-cheeked Tern, Blanford’s, Somali Short-toed and Short-tailed Larks, Greater Hoopoe-Lark, Yellow-breasted Barbet, Nile Valley Sunbird, White-crowned, Shelley’s and Magpie Starlings, Somali Bee-eater, Somali Sparrow and Northern Grosbeak-Canary.

This tour takes us to places where very few birders have ever been. We will enjoy some superb birding while witnessing spectacular scenery, fascinating history, diverse cultures and rare wildlife, making our Somaliland tour an essential expedition for the intrepid birder.

Finland & Norway - Forests and FjordsThis cracking tour will take us from the Siberian taiga forests of central Finland through to the Arctic fjords of Norway. We begin our birding near the Russian border at Kuusamo, searching for Black Grouse and Western Capercaillie with definite highlights sure to include several breeding owls such as Great Grey, Ural, Northern Hawk, Boreal, Eurasian Pygmy and Short-eared Owl. We can also expect a number of encounters with a veritable feast of eastern specialities, including Siberian Jay, Grey-headed Chickadee, Parrot Crossbill, breeding Red-flanked Bluetail, Little and Rustic Bunting, Bohemian Waxwing, Black and Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker, Hazel Grouse, Willow Ptarmigan, Red-necked Grebe and Little Gull.

Moving northwards, we cross Arctic Lapland before entering Norway, spending the remainder of our tour birding the scenically superb, bird-rich Varanger Peninsula. At such a northerly latitude, this really is the ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’! Amongst the numerous specialities, we can expect to see such sought after species as Steller’s and King Eider, Common, Black-throated and Yellow-billed Loon, Common Merganser, Glaucous Gull, Common and Thick-billed Murre, Razorbill, Atlantic Puffin, Rock Ptarmigan and Lapland Longspur. Comfortable accommodation and long summer days, surrounded by spectacular landscapes and birds ensures that Finland and the Arctic Circle are some of Europe’s classic birding destinations.

Georgia & Armenia - Birding the CaucasusLocated deep in the Caucasus, our birding tour to Georgia and Armenia is one of the most recent additions to our birding calendar. The end of the line as Europe is concerned, Georgia and Armenia stand at the crossroads of eastern Europe and western Asia. For centuries, both countries stood as Christian bulwarks against the Muslim tide sweeping across Asia Minor, before being dominated by the Mongols, Ottoman Empire, Iran and ultimately the Soviet Union.

The fall of the latter led to a rocky independence, with military skirmishes and near economic collapse. Fortunately, both Georgia and Armenia are well on the road to economic stability and prosperity.

Beginning in Tblisi, we make our way along the Georgian Military Highway. Originally built to facilitate troop movements, it provides an excellent thoroughfare to some of the most spectacular scenery and birding sites on earth, never mind Europe. Our first days around Kazbegi offer us the opportunity for some high-altitude birding and some of Europe’s most sought-after species, including the splendid Caucasian Snowcock (endemic to this single mountain range), Güldenstädt’s Redstart, Caucasian (Black) Grouse, the Caucasian sub-species of Great Rosefinch, Common Chiffchaff and Wallcreeper.

To the south, Jandari Lake holds an isolated population of Pygmy Cormorant and we should also find our first Armenian Gulls, before visiting the 6th-century rock-hewn Georgian Orthodox monastery of David Gareja.

After a week in Georgia, we move south into Armenia where we will explore the sacred Mount Aragats. Here we shall be on the look-out for Semi-collared Flycatcher, Radde’s Accentor and Eurasian Crimson-winged Finch, before taking in the scenic Amberd Fortress built in the 11th-century. The Armash fish ponds hold three rare and elusive species: Marbled and White-headed Duck alongside White-tailed Lapwing while time will also be spent at the Vedi Hills targeting Grey-necked Bunting, Finsch’s Wheatear, Eastern Rock Nuthatch and Trumpeter Finch. Here, we should also have time to enjoy another

cultural highlight: the Noravank Monastry – located within a narrow gorge cut by the Amaghu River. Our last site on tour is Meghri, in the deep-south of Armenia near the Iranian border. Of prime interest here are the few pairs of Red-tailed Wheatear, a species mostly restricted to Iran. Using 4×4 vehicles, we shall also ascend a high pass to search for what may end up being the bird of the tour: Caspian Snowcock. The high altitude also supports Bearded Vulture, Ring Ouzel, Red-fronted Serin and White-winged Snowfinch.

Russia - Birding the Ural Mountains

The Ural mountain-range, or simply ‘the Urals’, is the longest mountain-range in Russia, at over 2,000 kilometres long. Spanning north to south through western Russia, the Urals are geographically significant as they form part of the conventional boundary between Asian and European Russia.

At approximately 500 million years old, the Urals are some of the oldest mountains in the world and are remarkably high in elevation for a mountain range of such vintage. With the discovery of mineral resources, extraction began as early as the beginning of the 17th-century, and the Urals have been treasured by the Russians ever since.

A highly diverse terrain has led to a remarkably rich biodiversity, with habitats changing rapidly as we move from the central to northern Urals. Aside from searching for many species that are difficult on any world birder’s list, this tour has the added significance of falling within the boundaries of the Western Palearctic region. We will dedicate our time to finding a host of localised or otherwise difficult Western Palearctic species that include Black-throated Accentor, Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker, Siberian Rubythroat, Red-flanked Bluetail, Long-tailed Rosefinch, Azure Tit, Grey-headed Chickadee, Lanceolated Warbler, Ural Owl, Western Capercaillie and White’s Thrush.

China - Reeves’s Pheasant & Crested Ibis Extension

Our short extension to the southern-most country of Henan Province is dedicated to finding a handful of incredibly range-restricted and endangered species. Departing Shanghai, we fly to Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province in central China, before taking a bullet train north to Xinyang and transferring to our guesthouse near Dongzhai Nature Reserve. Our time here will be spent at specially constructed blinds, the core forest zone, Ling Shan Mountain and the marshes surrounding

Xinyang searching for the impressive Reeves’s Pheasant, endangered Crested Ibis and gorgeous Fairy Pitta. A fine supporting cast that includes Narcissus and Yellow-rumped Flycatcher, Chinese Bamboo Partridge, Masked Laughingthrush, Tristram’s Bunting, Rufous-faced Warbler, Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler and a host of migrant warblers shall keep us royally entertained during our search for the priority targets.

India - Western Tragopan QuestOver a billion people call India home; one of the world’s richest cultural settings and a landscape that boasts a staggering geographical diversity. Situated in the far north-western corner of the country, we visit India’s most recently proclaimed national park – the Great Himalayan National Park. This unexplored terrain of vast wilderness is one of the strongholds for a species that will be the main focus of our quest – the Western Tragopan! Arguably one of the most attractive and sought-after of all the pheasants, it has an estimated global population of only 2,500 to 3,000 individuals. This tour has been set up to specifically target this most desirable and little-known species. The local population refer to it as ‘Jujurana’, which translates roughly as “king of the birds.” According to local legend, the Western Tragopan was created by using the most beautiful and colourful feather of each bird in the universe.

We will explore the mountainous terrain on foot, traversing exquisite, unspoiled trails and fantastic

scenery to boot. While we search for our main quarry, we shall also

enjoy a supporting cast of many range-restricted species confined to the

Himalayas, such as the iconic Himalayan Monal, the reclusive, long-tailed Cheer Pheasant, Snow Pigeon, Long-billed Thrush, Altai Accentor and

White-cheeked Nuthatch, amongst other targets such as Bearded Vulture and Wallcreeper. Set in an unspoilt, beautiful series of valleys and ridges, this tour is a set to reward even the most travelled birder.

Iran - Persian Birding Adventure

Situated on the eastern edge of the Western Palearctic, Iran is not only a geographically diverse country but also host to one the world’s oldest civilisations. This ancient country, formerly known as Persia possesses over 20 UNESCO world Heritage sites, the only Asian population of Cheetah and a host of endemic and highly range restricted species. Part of the once famous ‘Hippie Trail’, Iran’s poor western public image has hamstrung tourism to the country until recently. The Persian people are without doubt some of the world’s friendliest and most hospitable!

Our fourteen day tour starts in the capital, Tehran with a short flight south to Bandar Abbas on the Persian Gulf. Here we will spend time investigating the mangrove forest around Jask and the almond and pistachio woodlands and orchards around Minab for Sind Woodpecker, Graceful Prinia, Red-tailed (Turkestan) and Bay-backed Shrike, Afghan Babbler, Dalmatian Pelican and Crab-plover.

We depart Minab and head to Ahvaz for a few days to search the Dez and Karkhe River area for Iraq Babbler,

Grey Hypocolius, Hooded Crow (of the distinct Mesopotamian sub-species), Dead Sea Sparrow, Egyptian Nightjar and Menetries’s Warbler. Returning to Tehran, we shall spend the rest of our tour traversing the Alburz Mountain Range, the Caspian Sea and Touran National Park. Amongst the many species we can expect to see over the next few days, the highlights are sure to include Caspian Tit, Caspian Snowcock, Red-fronted Serin, Red-tailed (Persian) Wheatear, Black-headed Penduline Tit, Pleske’s Ground Jay, Asian Desert Warbler, Macqueen’s Bustard and Seesee Partridge.

Israel - Ultimate MigrationNestled on the shores of the Mediterranean and Red Seas, the tiny country of Israel is not only one of the best birding destinations in the Western Palearctic, it is also host to an incredibly rich history. Ruled at various times by the Romans, Crusaders, Ottomans, Egyptians and British, it is also the spiritual epicentre of three of the world’s major religions. From Eilat and the Arava Valley in the south, to the Hula Valley and Mount Hermon in the north; we explore the length and breadth of the country’s wealth of habitats such as deserts, wadis, mountains and wetlands taking in the rich biodiversity, riveting history and fascinating culture.

Our tour is timed to coincide with the world famous raptor migration through Eilat. With the correct wind and positioning, we hope to witness this incredible spectacle. Bursts of raptors moving through in full migration will mainly be comprised of thousands of European Honey Buzzard, Black Kite, lesser numbers of Short-toed Snake Eagle, Common Buzzard, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Egyptian Vulture, Western Osprey, Pallid, Montagu’s and Western Marsh Harrier and Booted, Lesser Spotted, Greater Spotted, Eastern Imperial and Steppe Eagle. Aside from the migration spectacle, we will also go in search of species that have a limited distribution or simply difficult to see elsewhere in the world.

Specialties that will form the focus of this tour include Syrian Serin, Arabian and Cyprus Warbler, Sinai Rosefinch, Thick-billed, Temminck’s and Dunn’s Lark, Asian Crimson-winged, Trumpeter and Desert Finch, Hooded, Finsch’s and Cyprus Wheatear, Cream-colored Courser, Sand Partridge, Macqueen’s Bustard, Streaked Scrub Warbler (now placed in its own monotypic bird family), Lichtenstein’s, Pin-tailed, Black-bellied, Crowned and Spotted Sandgrouse, Dead Sea Sparrow, Barbary Falcon, Sombre Tit, Tristram’s Starling, Cretzschmar’s Bunting and Nubian Nightjar. Great infrastructure, relatively small size, a vast array of habitats and timed to coincide with the northward migration along this flyway will ensure that this tour will be remembered for years to come.

Borneo - Sarawak & Kalimantan EndemicsThis exciting tour takes us deep into the vast and remote ocean of forest that cloaks the Sarawak province of Borneo. Using recently-made logging tracks to gain access to these forests, we will endeavour to find several of the island’s seldom-seen endemics, including two of the most poorly-known species on earth, namely Black Oriole and Dulit Frogmouth. Fortunately, many of the species we will search for live in healthy numbers in the area, and we have a very high chance of finding a fabulous array of Bornean endemics that include Red-breasted and Crimson-headed Partridge, Bornean and Mountain Barbet, Bornean

Bulbul, Bornean Treepie, Blue-banded and Bornean Banded Pitta, Hose’s Broadbill, Bornean Frogmouth, Bare-headed Laughingthrush, Whitehead’s Spiderhunter, Pygmy White-eye, Mountain Serpent Eagle, Bornean Leafbird and even rare specials like Bornean Peacock-Pheasant and Bornean Ground Cuckoo! And while by no means guaranteed, we also have an excellent chance of finding both the oriole and the frogmouth – despite the fact that the former was only known from specimens until its recent discovery, while the latter has remained almost as poorly-known since 1891! In fact, our previous departures have enjoyed a 100% success rate with these two species.

On its own, this tour offers a chance at seeing around half of the island’s endemics; while as an add-on to our Malaysia & Borneo – Rainforest Birds & Mammals tour, the combination could add over 90% (all but three) of the island’s endemics to your list!Li

Nepal - Birding the Himalayas

Great seas once rolled across what is now Nepal, the land of rugged mountains, rhododendrons, Mt Everest, sub-tropical jungle and grasslands! Fifteen million years later, parts of that gigantic sea bed have become the Himalayas – the highest region in the world. Located beneath their southern slopes is the Kingdom of Nepal, sharing borders in the east, west and south with India and in the north with the Tibeten region of the People’s Republic of China.

At times, Nepal has played the role of intermediary between these two great powers and at other times, it has faced the threat of invasion. Nepal is a beautiful and diverse land with an amazing variety of wildlife and landscapes. Its cultural and religious mix and intriguing history have conquered the hearts and minds of visitors throughout time.

Our birding tour explores all the key areas of this fascinating, beautiful and changing country. Our tour begins in Kathmandu-Shivapuri National Park, where we find Nepal’s only endemic bird, Spiny Babbler, and Hoary-throated Barwing – a near endemic shared only with Bhutan. We also spend a few days in the Phulchowki Hills, a popular birding site and excellent introduction to Himalayan birding.

A visit to Nepal would not be complete without enjoying an unbroken vista of some of the world’s highest mountains: the snowy Annapurna Range, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu. We will also keep our birding list ticking over, with Red-

headed Bullfinch, a number of pheasants and even a chance for Scaly Thrush. A visit to the famous Chitwan National Park gives us ample opportunities of finding Tiger and Indian Rhinoceros; while Bengal Florican, Grey-crowned Prinia, Slender-billed Babbler, Rufous-rumped Grassbird and Lesser Adjutant will also be sought.

As the tour draws to a close, we head to Hetauda, where various rivers and gorges en route may offer up the sought-after Ibisbill, Wallcreeper, Brown Dipper, and a quartet of forktails. Our final birding stop will be at Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, which protects riverine grassland on the banks of the Sapta Koshi River. Here we will search for the threatened Swamp Francolin amongst other habitat specialists, such as White-tailed Stonechat, Striated Grassbird, Yellow-breasted and Black-faced Bunting and Black-breasted Weaver.

Sri Lanka - Budget Birding TourOur budget Sri Lanka birding and wildlife tour takes us to, without a doubt, one of the world’s most pleasurable birdwatching and game viewing destinations. This friendly island nation boasts verdant scenery, characterised by terraced tea plantations and forest patches, and is blessed with many surprisingly large national parks brimming with game and birds. These attractions, coupled with a fascinating history and vibrant culture, make this a

truly exotic destination and a pleasure to explore. From the central highlands to the rich lowland rainforests, Sri Lanka is one of only a handful of magical destinations where it is possible to see every single country endemic in a short space time. Highlights on the lowland leg of the tour include Serendib Scops Owl, Chestnut-backed Owlet, Red-faced Malkoha, splendid Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Sri Lanka Thrush, White-faced Starling, Green-billed Coucal and Sri Lanka Frogmouth while the highlands serve up the striking Yellow-eared Bulbul, Pied and the endangered Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush, Kashmir Flycatcher and Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon to name but a few! Our brand new budget offering delivers a low cost, well-planned, itinerary making this tour a ‘must’ for the keen birder!

Taiwan - Winter Birding

Taiwan not only harbours some of Asia’s most wonderful avifauna, but also a host of other highlights, which make it the perfect destination for a comfortable and relaxing birding tour. With 27 currently recognised endemics and over 50 endemic subspecies, several of which will almost certainly be elevated to full species status in the next few years, Taiwan has much to offer both the serious and casual birder alike. Located 100 km east of China, just south of Japan and Korea, and slightly north of the Philippines, this small island is less than 400 km long and 150 km wide, with rugged central mountains interspersed with deep valleys, and boasts a high biodiversity in a very manageable package.

Our Taiwan in Winter tour is a comprehensive tour of Taiwan that focuses on the endemics and other East Asian specialities in the nation’s largely pristine and well-protected forests. Highlights will include legendary species like the magnificent Swinhoe’s and Mikado Pheasants, Taiwan Partridge, the spectacular Taiwan Blue Magpie, Chestnut-bellied and Yellow Tits, Black-necklaced Scimitar Babbler, Flamecrest, Collared Bush Robin, Taiwan Whistling Thrush, Malayan Night Heron and Black-faced Spoonbill, to mention just a few! Most of our time will be spent in the mountains, but we will allow some time in the lowlands and along the coast in order to search for wetland and coastal species, including various endemic sub-species and other specialities that are otherwise very difficult to see anywhere else.

When circumstances allow, we will also make time for exploring and enjoying the numerous other aspects of Taiwan’s natural biodiversity, the fascinating human culture and, of course, for chasing any reported notable vagrants! In addition, the Taiwanese are a super-friendly and welcoming people who have blended the best parts of unspoiled, traditional Chinese culture with the influence of colonial Japan and the native Austronesian culture. Taiwan is free and democratic, has good infrastructure and is extremely safe for tourists, all of which should ensure a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding birding adventure.

Vietnam - Mega Birding TourAfter being isolated from the birding and travelling world for so long, Vietnam has become one of the key destinations on the world birding map. This mega tour takes in all the essential sites, giving us an excellent chance of locating all of Vietnam’s endemic and near-endemic species.

Starting in Hanoi, we take in the best of Tam Dao, Ba Be, Cuc Phuong and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Parks, targeting the little known and endangered White-eared Night Heron, Coral-billed and Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler, Rufous-headed and Short-tailed Parrotbill, Collared Babbler, Limestone Leaf Warbler, White-tailed

Flycatcher, Fujian Niltava, Red-collared Woodpecker, Austen’s Brown Hornbill and Limestone Wren-Babbler

To the south, we cover another large variety of unique habitats, from the dry woodlands of Yok Don and the lush montane forests of Mang Den and Nha-Ke Bang National Park to the scrubby, secondary forest of Lo Xo Pass and the limestone woodland and forest of Bach Ma National Park. These birding hotspots afford us the chance of seeing some of Vietnam’s most seldom-encountered avian specialities, which include near-mythical species such as Chestnut-eared Laughingthrush, Black-crowned Barwing and Annam Partridge, as well as localised endemics and global rarities, such as Yellow-billed Nuthatch, Short-tailed Scimitar Babbler, Red-tailed Laughingthrush, Pale-capped Pigeon, White-winged Magpie, Mekong Wagtail and Sooty Babbler.

A scenic drive from Yok Don will take us to Dalat, a former French hill station at the southern extreme of the Central Highlands. En route we will visit the famous Ta Nung Valley, home to Grey-crowned Crocias, a species thought to have been extinct for over 50 years! From Dalat, we will make day trips to the nearby Mount Lang Bian and Ho Tuyen Lam for the striking but skulky Collared Laughingthrush, Dalat Shrike-babbler, Vietnamese Cutia, Vietnamese Greenfinch and Black-crowned Fulvetta.

Di Linh offers up some mouth-watering specialities, including Black-hooded, White-cheeked and Orange-breasted Laughingthrush, as well as the near-endemic Black-crowned Parrotbill.

We finish our tour in the magnificent lowland tropical forests of Cat Tien National Park. Numerous specialities, both avian and mammalian, occur here, and we could find Blue-rumped and Bar-bellied Pitta, Germain’s Peacock-Pheasant, Green Peafowl, the elusive Orange-necked Partridge, Great Slaty Woodpecker and Grey-faced Tit-Babbler. Significant mammals could include Leopard Cat, Lesser Oriental Chevrotain, Gaur and three beautiful primates: Black-shanked Douc Langur, Silvered Lutung and Red-cheeked Gibbon.

Brazil - Manaus & Rio Negro Few countries in the Americas hold more mystique and intrigue than the massive nation of Brazil. No feature on the continent of South America is more recognisable, more written about, or more wistfully contemplated than the Amazon River.

Despite this mighty river’s nearly 4,000 miles of length, remarkably few ports of access exist. In fact, the entirety of the Amazon Basin, some 2,800,000 sq. miles (!), represents the largest contiguous area of intact rain forest, and the least-populated area, in the entire Western Hemisphere. No wonder the draw of the Amazon is irresistible to the nature-loving explorer in all of us!

This tour is centred in the heart of the basin, in the states of Amazonas and Para, where we will access the entire suite of micro-habitats in the region. From the white water river islands and flooded varzea forests of the Amazonas and Negro river systems, and across hilly terra firme, we will spend time in boats and afoot, searching out the Amazon Basin’s most spectacular and iconic bird species.

Specials and endemics are almost too many to mention and include the magnificent Harpy Eagle, two species of trumpeter, White-winged and Rufous Potoo, Golden Parakeet, Vulturine, Caica, Dusky and Red-fan Parrot, Brown-chested Barbet, Varzea Piculet, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Crimson Fruitcrow, Purple-breasted and

Guianan Red Cotinga, Capuchinbird, Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, Castelnau’s Antshrike, Klages’s Antwren, Ash-

breasted and Harlequin Antbird, Pale-faced Bare-eye, Fiery-tailed Awlbill, endangered Scaled Spinetail and Spotted Tanager. Wildlife possibilities range from Brazilian Tapir and Pink River Dolphin to the

elusive Jaguar. This tour offers an in-depth exploration featuring the very best birding

that the Amazon has to offer.

Brazil - Amazonia NP ExtensionOur tour of Amazonia National Park

takes us south of the Amazon, amidst a host of special birds. Situated on the Rio Tapajos, we will

have access to many of the Madeira-Tapajos interfluvium species. Many of these birds have evolved within the forest between these two major river tributaries, and

are found nowhere else. Some of the many highlights we can look forward to include White-crested Guan, Dark-winged Trumpeter, Cryptic Forest Falcon, Crimson-bellied and Santarem Parakeet, White-eyed, Sclater’s and Ihering’s Antwren, Wing-banded, Banded, Rufous-faced and Xingu Scale-backed Antbird, Alta Floresta Antpitta, Black-bellied Gnateater, Rusty-belted Tapaculo, Elegant, Ocellated, Uniform and Hoffman’s Woodcreeper, Zimmer’s Tody-Tyrant, White-tailed Cotinga, Snow-capped and Flame-crowned Manakin and Rose-breasted Chat. These are truly spectacular, heart-of-the-jungle species that few birders have ever laid eyes on.

Ecuador - Pacific Coast Extension

Our new pre-tour extension to southern Ecuador takes us along the country’s Pacific shores, visiting Isla de la Plata for spectacular encounters with both Blue-footed and Naz-ca Booby, many Magnificent Frigatebirds, the odd Hump-back Whale and Red-billed Tropicbird. We complete our journey by birding the coastal forests back to Guayaquil searching for the endangered endemic Esmeralda’s Wood-star, Grey-and-white Tyrannulet, Grey-capped Cuckoo, Necklaced Spinetail, Parrot-billed Seedeater, Collared Warbling and Sulphur-throated Finch, Red-lored Amazon, Chilean Flamingo and the smallest bird in South America, the Short-tailed Woodstar.

Ecuador – WesternOur reworked Western Ecuador birding tour completes our tour coverage of this incredibly diverse country. Long-ignored and historically tricky to reach, the lowland Chocó forests of north-west Ecuador and the coastal littoral now make for a very appealing tour. The Chocó is an eco-region and biodiversity hotspot that holds the largest number of range-restricted birds of any Endemic Bird Area in the Americas, with 62 exciting endemics. Habitats are typically characterised by tropical humid lowland forests and wet cloud-forests. Unfortunately, the Chocó region is also one of the most threatened areas in South America. Deforestation rates are accelerating and habitat destruction has been most severe in the lowlands, especially the coastal plains and foothills.

Departing Quito, we are introduced to the Andean region of the Chocó, with a bevy of normally difficult species, including Moss-backed Tanager, Indigo Flowerpiercer, Beautiful Jay, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Chocó Vireo, Pacific Tuftedcheek, Black Solitaire, Star-chested Treerunner, and Purplish-mantled and Glistening-green Tanager. We also have a chance to see a few enigmatic antpitta species, like Giant, Yellow-breasted, Ochre-breasted and Moustached. As we move into the Chocó

lowlands, we target Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Brown Wood Rail, endangered and little known Banded Ground Cuckoo, Ocellated and Stub-tailed Antbird, Scarlet-breasted Dacnis and Scarlet-and-white, Blue-whiskered and Lemon-spectacled Tanager. Five-colored Barbet, Lita and Chocó Woodpecker, Black-tipped Cotinga and Yellow-green Bush and Golden-chested Tanager provide the supporting cast to the drab but monotypic Sapayoa and the exceedingly tricky Rufous-crowned Antpitta.

Ecuador - Southern EndemicsOur newly modelled South Ecuador Endemics birding tour takes us to one of the most diverse range of habitats in

the world to look for a whole host of special and endemic birds. Within 200 miles of the Pacific Coast, one can travel from the

arid xerophytic habitat, through semi-deciduous tropical forest, over the continental divide’s treeless paramos and down to the lush, wet, foothill forests of the eastern Andes and Amazon basin.

Within these varied, pristine habitats, the evolution of

many fine endemic species has occurred; and on our new South Ecuador Endemics tour, we will sample seven distinct habitats in search of these endemics and other Ecuador bird specialities. Targets include El Oro and White-breasted Parakeet, El Oro (Ecuadorian) Tapaculo,

Watkins’s and the fantastic Jocotoco Antpitta, White-headed

Brush Finch, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, the fabulous Long-wattled

Umbrellabird, Rainbow Starfrontlet and the vociferous, colourful and extremely localised Orange-throated Tanager.

Guyana - Birds & Wildlife

Our Comprehensive Guyana birding tour explores some of the last relatively unexplored wildernesses on Earth. The variety of pristine habitats, from lowland rainforests and the cool savannas of Surama Mountain to the waterways of the famed Rupununi and Kaieteur, one of the world’s highest waterfalls, ensures that this magical destination has something to offer every birder. We have been operating trips through Guyana for the past nine years but have revamped our offering for 2018 to include spectacular and endangered species like Sun Parakeet and Red Siskin in our regular Guyana tour. All of the major locations will be visited including Iwokrama, Atta and Surama Lodges, searching for Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, Crimson Fruitcrow, Capuchinbird, Rio Branco Antbird,

Scarlet Ibis, Guianan Red Cotinga, Rufous-winged Ground Cuckoo and Harpy and Crested Eagle, among many birding highlights that can be anticipated. Mammals form a major emphasis of this tour, and we can expect species ranging from the amazing Giant Anteater to Giant River Otter and a good chance for Jaguar.

Peru - Mega Birding TourPeru is one of the most diverse and exciting birding destinations on the planet, offering an abundance of highly sought-after endemic avifauna. This, combined with spectacular scenery and thriving local culture, makes for a very popular birding destination. This specially crafted tour covers a number of hot spots, targeting a large variety of Peru’s endemics and near endemics.

The Tumbes area, on the northern border with Ecuador, will be the perfect starting point for this exciting tour. Here, we search for Guayaquil Woodpecker, Tumbes Hummingbird, Elegant Crescentchest and Watkin’s Antpitta before heading south to Quebrada Limon and Olmos, site of the critically endangered White-winged Guan, Red-masked Parakeet, Tumbes Swallow, Necklaced Spinetail, Tumbes Pewee, White-tailed Jay and Tumbes Sparrow. As we start moving eastwards, climbing over the Abra Porculla pass to Jaen we search for Piura Chat-Tyrant, Bay-headed Brushfinch and Little Inca Finch. We then deliver one of the great highlights of any trip to Peru, the incredible Marvelous Spatuletail and Pale-billed Antpitta on the same day! Time spent in the brilliant and little known forests of Abra Patricia should produce some wonderful birds such as Royal Sunangel, White-capped Tanager, the ‘mythical’ Long-whiskered Owlet, Lulu’s Tody-Flycatcher and Yellow-scarfed Tanager. The lowlands around Tarapoto, the Cordillera Escalara and sites en route such as Arenas Blancas Preserve will give us chances for the rarely seen Rufous-breasted Wood Quail, both Little and Cinereous Tinamou, endemic Ash-throated Antwren, Grey-tailed Piha, Dotted Tanager, rare Koepke’s Hermit and endemic Huallaga Tanager before heading off to the isolated city of Iquitos.

ICA Our time in Iquitos will be divided between Allpahuayo

Mishana, Explornapo and Muyuna Lodge. With an area list of over 600 species, we shall certainly have our hands full with an amazing volume of new birds. While quite impossible to mention all the possible highlights, some of the major targets encompass Ancient Antwren, Allpahuayo Antbird, Iquitos Gnatcatcher, Rufous and White-winged Potoo, Pompadour and Black-necked Red Cotinga, Zimmer’s Tody-Tyrant and Wattled Curassow.

Next up is the High Andes where we will traverse the famed Manu Road, dropping in at Lago Huacarpay for Rusty-fronted Canastero, Streak-fronted Thornbird and the prime target of the area; the gorgeous endemic Bearded Mountaineer. We climb to the highest parts of the Manu Road before descending the eastern Andean slopes, birding through temperate zones and montane cloud forest, offering chances for an incredible variety of exceptional and endemic birds. These include Cerulean-capped and Yungas Manakins, Rufous-capped Thornbill, Crested and Golden-headed Quetzal, the outrageous Amazonian Umbrellabird, Inca Flycatcher, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Golden-eyed Flowerpiercer and Peruvian Piedtail. With persistence, night birding in this area might yield the uncommon Napo and Rufescent Screech Owl, Rufous-banded Owl, Lyre-tailed Nightjar and possibly even Andean Potoo.

As the tour reaches its conclusion, we head down the Rio Madre de Dios to the overwhelming Manu Wildlife Centre, one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the world. The number of star birds here is again mind-boggling, with over 560 species having been recorded! Stellar potentials include Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Manu Antbird, Elusive Antpitta, Razor-billed Curassow, Pale-winged Trumpeter, Pavonine Quetzal, Purus Jacamar, Sunbittern, Sungrebe and Agami Heron, to name but a few!

Our final day in Peru will be spent in the Urubamba Valley and the Abra Malaga pass, some 4,230m above sea level. We will spend our time targeting the polylepis forest specialties of the area including Andean Hillstar, endemic White-breasted Tit-Spinetail, exhibitionist Stripe-headed Antpitta, endemic Junin Canastero, Puna Tapaculo, Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant and Giant Conebill.

In 2013 we released the Colombia: 1,000 Bird Mega tour, where we attempted to deliver over 1,000 species in a matter of 30 days. Many wondered if this was even possible, but 30 days later and a trip list of 1,017 proved it was very much possible! Can we find 1,000 species in Peru on a single tour? Come along and help us find out.

Costa Rica - Caribbean CoastCosta Rica is split by the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera de Talamanca, providing incredibly scenic and diverse habitats. Our tour encompasses the bird-rich cloud-forests, as well as the Caribbean highlands and the humid coastal plain, offering many striking species of trogons, toucans, motmots, hummingbirds and migrant warblers, amongst numerous other spectacular birds.

Departing San Jose, we dive straight into pristine cloud forests, home to such exotic species as the unbelievable Snowcap, Resplendent Quetzal, Cabanis’s Ground Sparrow, Buff-fronted and Chiriqui Quail-Dove, Great Green Macaw, Snowy Cotinga, Black-crested Coquette, Black Guan and Golden-browed Chlorophonia. Moving into the Caribbean lowlands opens up a completely new array of species, including such highlights as Keel-

billed Toucan, Black-chested Jay, Gartered, Slaty-tailed and Black-throated Trogon, White-collared and Red-capped Manakin, Green Shrike-Vireo, Rufous-winged Woodpecker, Black-throated and Canebrake Wren, range-restricted Sulphur-rumped Tanager, and tiny Black-capped Pygmy Tyrant.

Our tour is perfectly timed to coincide with the amazing Kekoldi migration, considered as one of the best raptor migration observing points on Earth. With daily totals ranging as high as 100,000 Swainson’s Hawks, 80,000 Broad-winged Hawks, 20,000 Mississippi Kites and tens of thousands of other species mixed in – our time here will surely be one of the tour highlights! Thrilling birding, quality lodges and a relaxed pace make this destination perfect for anyone who has yet to experience the exciting avifauna of Central America!
