Leave a lasting gift in your Will “It feels good to know I will help Rossendale Hospice to be there for people living with a life limiting illness” How do I make a Will? It is important that you use the services of a solicitor. If you don’t already know a solicitor you may choose to contact Woodcocks, Haworth & Nuttall Solicitors, who are Patrons and long-term supporters of the Hospice: Stephen Parr, Haslingden Office 01706 213356 Catherine Hamilton, Rawtenstall Office 01706 225621 Wendy Scott, Bacup Office 01706 874487 What if I already have a Will? Your solicitor can append a codicil to your Will. A codicil is a short, simple legal document which can easily amend an existing Will to add a fixed sum, effectively a donation, to be given to the charity. Do I have enough assets? Most people are surprised by how much their assets add up to. You don’t need to be wealthy to make a Will or leave a gift. After taking care of loved ones you can choose to leave a Residuary Gift (a proportion of what is left after all other commitments have been met) – or a Pecuniary Gift (a gift of a specific amount) to the Hospice. Can a gift to charity help me pay less tax? The money and assets left in your estate may be subject to inheritance tax and it may be an advantage if your family and friends are left gifts below the tax threshold so they do not have to pay inheritance tax. The remainder of your estate can then be left as a gift to one or more charities like Rossendale Hospice as gifts to charities are free of Inheritance Tax. In addition, if your estate is over the Inheritance Tax threshold, and you leave 10% of your estate to charity, the tax due on the assets you do not leave to charity may be paid at the reduced rate of 36% (instead of 40%). If I have left you a gift should I tell you? It would be really helpful if you tell us that you have included a gift to Rossendale Hospice in your Will. We will then know that we don’t need to approach you again and we can keep you updated on how your intended gift can help support the Hospice. “My wife was a big supporter of the Hospice before she died 4 years ago. When my only son died earlier this year I had no-one to inherit my estate. The Hospice has been a great help tome in trying to cope with my grief. By remembering the Hospice in my Will I feel that I am also fulfilling my wife’s wishes.”

Harry, aged 87, Rawtenstall

“When the Hospice held a Make a Will Fortnight earlier this year I realised that our Will needed updating. I have been volunteering for the Hospice for the past 3 years and seen at first hand the fantastic service patients and their families receive. It is reassuring to know that such a wonderful charity is there if I or my husband should ever need it. We were both keen to leave the Hospice something in our Will.

Hilary, aged 59, Haslingden
