Message from the Executive Director

With much delight, we share with you our activity report for the remarkable 2012. This is the best way we can celebrate the outstanding achievements we had and appreciate the people and institutions that energized the vision.

May I start by appreciating the Women Deliver, Theo & Presci Foundation, and Ashoka Changemankers for the quality mentorship support. I also thank the volunteers and staff with whom we dreamt, arose to take action and conquered the stumbling blocks to meet the needs of women, girls and children in Cameroon. Nobody ever did what have done in our time, place and price.

From the very first day, I knew 2012 was going to be a breakthrough year for our organization. Operating three new projects without complete legalization papers was enough indication we were going to achieve beyond human comprehension. We finally got the long awaited Legalization to operate as a National Charity Organization, nurtured 20 under 2 orphans and vulnerable Children (OVCs) at our Bouncing Babies Daycare Centre, gave material support to 100 OVCs in Mezam Division, distributed over 2350 bottles of ‘Golden Mineral Water’ to low-income families in Bamenda, helped women of child bearing age to chose when to have their babies, partnered with the United Nations joint program on HIV (UNAIDS) to crowdsourse information for the UNAIDS Strategic Document for Youth and HIV Beyond 2012; and attended many international consultations on maternal and child health. To say all these happened in 12 months is enough prove of Grace.

I appreciate the State authorities and community leaders for facilitating the process towards these great achievements. Now that our experimental year has proven that social enterprising can deliver the social needs of women, girls and children in Cameroon, lets chose forward, setting our eyes on the goal, in hope and persistence.

Projects

The Bouncing Babies Daycare Centre (BBDC) Project

)

As a contribution towards the welfare of orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), the BBDC project was launched in September 2011. Located at S-Bend Mile III Nkwen, BBDC is the first ever child daycare in Bamenda that enrolls toddlers of 12 weeks old. Within the last 12 months, the centre catered for 20 OVCs.

The mission of Bouncing Babies Child Care Center is to provide safe, affordable, high quality child care for OVCs in the Bamenda community. In doing so, we support families in their efforts to reach their goal and provide cognitively based formation for infants in a home-like environment that encourages convenience. Our staff is committed to the families we serve, providing support and encouragement. Exceptionally, the staff conducts daily health checks on the babies to prevention infant morbidity and mortality.

This project also has as secondary objective to encourage teenage mother to return to school and pursue their dreams.

Water for all Projects

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) call for a reduction of the

proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by

half by 2015. Yet, an estimated 884 million people in the world, 37% of

whom live in Sub-Saharan Africa, still use unimproved sources of drinking

water1.

Lack of access to safe drinking water contributes to the staggering burden of diarrhoea diseases worldwide, particularly affecting the young, the immune-compromised and the poor. Nearly one in five child deaths – about 1.5 million each year – is due to diarrhoea. Diarrhoea kills more young children than AIDS, malaria and measles combined2. Drinking contaminated water also leads to reduced personal productive time, with widespread economic effects. Approximately 43% of the global population, especially the lower-income populace in the remote and rural parts of the developing world (like part of Bamenda), is deprived of household safe piped water. Thus, there is a pressing need for effective and affordable options for obtaining safe

drinking water. In January 2012, CASD introduced the Golden Natural Mineral Water in Bamenda, Cameroon. So far, it’s the most affordable bottled drinking water in Cameroon. 0.5l sells at 100FCFA, same quantity its commercial competitors sell at 250FCFA. Each time you drink Golden Water, you safe

150FCFA. Over 2850 bottles have been distributed to low-income families in Bamenda. Every child deserves safe drinking water! The Family Planning (FP) Project About 70% of adolescents in Cameroon are sexually active at the age of 16. 14 in every 100 girls aged 15-24 have conceived a baby though only 4% of the pregnant adolescents (married or not) desired a pregnancy. (GFMER 2010). Generally, unintended pregnancies in Cameroon stand at 22.7% with only 37% of family planning demands satisfied (Countdown 2012). The FP project executed by CASD puts at the disposal of the women in Bamenda a Family planning counselor to help them make informed choices. Clients of the project also benefit discounted services in five ProFarm Clinics around Bamenda. The first phase of the project is still to be evaluated.

Orphans and Vulnerable Children Outreach (OVCO) Project

Since 2010, CASD in line with the OVCO Project visits an OVC community

each year, identify the OVCs, assess their pressing material and

psychosocial needs and supply them. In 2012, we undertook the project in

Bawok. This community has over 400 OVCs within a population of less than

2000. Most of the OVCs lost their parents and homes to the Bali-Bawork

inter-tribal wars in 2011.

Among the support they received from CASD in 2012 are cloths, food and

counseling.

The Training of Obstetric Nurses (TON) Project

Currently the oldest and largest project of CASD, this project runs the

Institute of Science Technology (IST) Bamenda since 2009. Each year we

graduate a batch of qualified obstetric nurses to meet the high demand of

skilled birth attendance in Cameroon and Africa at large. In 2013, we

graduated 21 skilled birth attendants and enrolled many more for the

current academic year.

Auxiliary Project

CrowdOut AIDS Project

In collaboration with the World AIDS Campaign, CASD mobilized young

people in Cameroon to participate in the crowd sourcing of information for

the designation of the New UNAIDS Strategy on Youth and HIV. Mobilization

was done on two fronts: The online process on social media and the open

forums for those that had a say but lack access to the internet.

The Time is Now Campaign.

In collaboration with Advocates for Youths, CASD conducted grassroots to

National advocacy for the recognition of the Sexual and Reproductive Rights

of young people in the United nations Conference on Sustainable

Development 2012(Rio+20). We designed the petition, mobilized local

signatures for endorsement, and support an Advocate for Youth delegate to

present at the conference in Rio de Jenario, Brazil.

Public Advocacy and Representation

1. CASD participated at the African Regional Consultations on Achieving

Millennium Development Goal 5 held in Kampala, Uganda, 27-28

March 2012. Together with over 200 African development partners

and Parliamentarians, we looked at the challenges facing the MDG5,

the opportunities and lessons learnt. CASD was the only participant

from Cameroon.

2. CASD participated at the Entrepreneurs Summit that held in

Bamenda on 28th November 2012 organized by the National

Employment Fund. There we were recognized as a national

development organization with high prospects of growth.

Vision, Mission and Objectives

VISION

Significantly contribute to the Cameroon Government’s plan of sustainable

development by 2035 and beyond by promoting innovations in health promotion,

social welfare, economic empowerment and environmental sustainance via

programming activities centered on women, youths and children.

MISSION

We work with communities and institutions in Cameroon to address the health,

economic and social issues affecting the development of women, girls and children.

OBJECTIVES

Boost interventions and strategies for improving reproductive, maternal, newborn and

child health in Cameroon

Research and provide facts which can help the government, development

organizations International Agencies and other institutions in designing and

implementing more applicable projects for the development of Cameroon.

Coordinate efforts by organizations, agencies, institutions and individuals

towards the development of strategic plans, policies, and goals for sustainable

development in Cameroon

Brace effort towards climate change mitigation and adaptation in Cameroon.

Enhance consumer sovereignty and access to basic needs like water, light,

shelter, and food in Cameroon.

Build the socio-economic capacities of young people through training programs

that empower them to be more independent and participative in the growth of

Cameroon.
