Matthew 5:1-12 5 Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up into the mountain and when he sat down his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and he began teaching them saying, 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the land. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for to them shall mercy be shown. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when you are reviled and persecuted and all kinds of evil is spoken against you falsely because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven; for so people persecuted the prophets before you.” (Translation by Keith Hamilton)

Reflection Last week, 405 people gathered at the Parramatta Town Hall to work for social justice and social inclusion. The people came from all walks of life, faith, race, gender, work, with one common desire to make Western Sydney a place of inclusion. They form the Sydney Alliance. The issues that the Alliance is working on include transport, housing and employment. Transport includes public transport to get to the Westmead hospital, and adequate parking. Employment includes employment for youth. Housing includes affordable housing for young people. Similar numbers of people met at Sutherland, North Sydney and Nepean Valley. Politicians and candidates for the next election were present and promised to take up the matters raised in election policy and take to the relevant minister/shadow minister and to the Premier/leader, including the request the next Premier attend an Assembly at the Sydney Opera House 100 days after the election. The politicians were also able to bring an update of transport and redevelopment work at Westmead Hospital. Parramatta Mission is part of the Sydney Alliance through being proudly part of the Uniting Church, through the Synod of NSW.ACT, and through our local Presbytery, Parramatta-Nepean. We hosted people in our hall for dinner. Northmead Uniting Church is a member in their own right. Their minister, Geoff Stevenson was a co-chair of the Parramatta Assembly. For more check out, http://www.sydneyalliance.org.au/. Sydney Alliance is bringing people together to work for a better Sydney.

Westmead Congregation

This has been a week of lovely Spring weather, with sunny days and cooler nights. May we spare a thought for the people living in the northwest of the state who are still suffering a devastating drought. Two little brothers from a property near Lightning Ridge have said all they want for Christmas is some rain, and the children on their school bus compare notes on weather reports. We take so much for granted in the city, maybe we can add these folk to our prayer list. Folk from Westmead are travelling again. Faith has gone to Canada to spend time with her family, and Naomi is travelling to South Africa to spend time with her family and join in their celebrations There is to be a wedding, a 21st birthday and Christmas celebrations, not to mention the excitement of being with them all again. Soo Ling is still away in Malaysia. Today our worship service will be led by Danielle and the message brought by Keith. Danielle is at present studying at UTC and is connected with Leigh Memorial Church, and we appreciate her sharing this time at Westmead too. Also, Westmead Congregation really enjoy sharing Danielle’s family too, and it is a treat to have the children present.

Reflections

Attitudes and behaviour mark the difference between people whose lives are a blessing to others and people who are difficult to live or work with.

The words from Matthew are the start of the Sermon on the Mount, often called the beatitudes or blessings. Two chapters later the sermon finishes with these words:

Now, everyone who hears these words of mine and does them shall be likened to a prudent person who built their house on the rock. And the rain came down and the rivers came and the winds blew and fell against that house, and it did not fall; for it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them shall be likened to a foolish person who built their house on the sand. And the rain came down, and the rivers came and the winds blew and beat against that house and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” So when Jesus finished this sermon, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, unlike their scribes.

These words are about prudence and foolishness, life and disaster.

More than one person has observed that the Ten Commandments with their clear does and don’ts are easier. Developing humility, gentleness, meekness, hungering and thirsting to do the right thing, are hard to do, being criticised, and even persecuted, for doing the right thing is hard to take. As any leader in any position will know, there are always critics ever ready to offer a verbal flogging. Yet, cutting through all of that, the knowledge that one has done the right thing in a difficult situation, exuded grace, treated people with dignity, worked for social inclusion, expressed faith and hope, brings its own rewards in a sense of satisfaction, even of being blessed.

On the first Sunday of November, the church celebrates All Saints Day. Originally it was a celebration of people of faith who had been put to death – martyred – for the faith, then extended to include all of faith who had died. A careful read of the Bible speaks of the saints as the gathered community of faith, alive in those days and in this day. Then as now the saints are not perfect. They are very human people endeavouring to live out their faith according to the teaching that includes the teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. They are saints because it is believed that the Spirit of God is at work in their/our lives. Indeed, to live a life characterised by the beatitudes requires not only our hard work on attitudes and behaviour, it requires the work of God - the Spirit of God – at work in our life as well. And the point is, when our lives are characterised by these attitudes and behaviours, not only are we blessed, but we become a blessing to others.

Blessings, Keith Hamilton
