Christopher K. Breuer, MD Christopher K. Breuer, MD, is co-director of the new Tissue Engineering Program at Nationwide Children’s, and director for Tissue Engineering in e Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s new Center for Regenerative Medicine and Cell Based erapies. Dr. Breuer graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and trained in Surgery and Pediatric Surgery at Brown University. He then served as the Chief of Pediatric Surgery for the United States Air Force. He currently holds three major National Institutes of Health grants, a grant from the American Heart Association, and extensive industry funding. He has received numerous honors recognizing his contributions, including the Jacobsen Promising Investigator Award from the American College of Surgeons which is given to the most innovative young surgical investigator in the country. Toshiharu Shinoka, MD, PhD Toshiharu Shinoka, MD, PhD, is co-director of the new Tissue Engineering Program at Nationwide Children’s. Dr. Shinoka received his medical degree from Hiroshima University and his PhD in biomedical engineering from Tokyo Women’s Medical University. He then served as a leading clinical congenital heart surgeon at the Heart Institute of Japan before joining Yale University. He has been conducting increasingly sophisticated tissue engineering research for nearly two decades. As an accomplished and successful surgeon-scientist, Dr. Shinoka will also be involved in the Heart Center’s Research initiatives that resonate well with his foundation in congenital heart disease translational research. He has received many honors and recognition for his work, including the Blue Ribbon 1 st Place Poster from the Society of oracic Surgeons Meeting. Karen A. Diefenbach, MDKaren A. Diefenbach, MD, is the new director for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Nationwide Children’s, and assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Diefenbach comes to Nationwide Children’s from Yale University School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital where she was an attending surgeon, and an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Diefenbach completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Illinois, OSF St. Francis Medical Center. She completed her training in Pediatric Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. Her clinical interests include minimally invasive surgical approaches to the correction of neonatal congenital anomalies such as tracheoesophageal fistulas and esophageal atresias, diaphragmatic hernias, intestinal atresias, and congenital lung lesions. She has a strong commitment to surgical education and has developed the first neonatal training devices for neonatal laparoscopy and thoracoscopy which are used in minimally invasive surgery courses here in the United States, as well as internationally. She is also the associate director of Surgical Education at Nationwide Children’s.

Tammi Young-Saleme, PhD Tammi Young-Saleme, PhD, has accepted a new role as director for Psychosocial Services and Program Development for the Section of Hematology/Oncology/BMT at Nationwide Children’s. She is also associate professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Young-Saleme will coordinate all aspects of psychosocial services provided for hematology/oncology/BMT, including pediatric psychology, social work, child life, pastoral care, massage therapy, therapeutic recreation, education services, and event coordination.

Nationwide Children’s will have the opportunity to pay greater attention to psychosocial programmatic growth in research, integration of clinical services, and expanded educational initiatives. Collaborating with the existing leadership of these services, Dr. Young-Saleme will continue to develop and grow a strong psychosocial component of the programs and further build relationships with community partners. This new organizational structure will serve as a model for other hematology/oncology/BMT programs around the country.

Gail E. Besner, MDGail E. Besner, MD, has been appointed chief of Pediatric Surgery at Nationwide Children’s. She is program director of the Residency in Pediatric Surgery; principal investigator in the Center for Perinatal Research in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s and associate director of the Burn Program. In addition, Dr. Besner is a professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

During the last 21 years, Dr. Besner has achieved a level of academic excellence that places her among the most acclaimed pediatric surgeons in the world. In the process, she has authored more than 130 original scientific articles, delivered over 200 presentations, mentored dozens of fellows and has been awarded seven patents. She is a member of every significant surgical organization in her field and has served as visiting professor around the United States and on several continents.

Garey Noritz, MD Garey Noritz, MD, is the medical director of the Complex Health Care Program (CCHS) which includes the cerebral palsy program at Nationwide Children’s. CCHS provides a medical home for children and adults with complex medical care needs and neurodevelopmental disabilities. This “wrap-around” service provides a family-centered approach to the care of the child and family. Dr. Noritz will also be medical director for the cerebral palsy program – which is an interdisciplinary comprehensive program designed to coordinate and manage the medical and social needs of patients with cerebral palsy and their families.

Dr. Noritz is an internist and pediatrician and has been at Nationwide Children’s since 2011. He is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and is a graduate of Brown University School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Physicians. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and is a Diplomate in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities. He is active at the national level in advocating for the care of children and adults with disabilities, and is on several committees with the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. He is chair-elect of the Lifespan Committee of the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. Dr. Noritz’s research interests include bone health in patients with disabilities, transition of children with disabilities to adult models of care, palliative medicine, and the respiratory care of patients with neuromuscular diseases.

Jonathon Groner, MD Jonathon Groner, MD, has been appointed surgical operations officer for Nationwide Children’s Surgical Services. This newly created position is an expanded version of the leadership role ably occupied by Dr. Stephen Koff prior to his retirement. In this position, Dr. Groner will co-chair the Perioperative Council, the primary governing body for the operating room and perioperative services. He will have oversight of and responsibility for quality of patient care and service, perioperative operations, and physician effectiveness. He will lead the block time committee and collaborate with the Chief of Anesthesia, Joe Tobias, MD, and VP of Perioperative Services, Janet Berry, to insure that

all facets of the perioperative environment achieve their full potential.

Hiren Patel, MDHiren Patel, MD, is the new chief of the Section of Nephrology and Medical Director of the Renal Dialysis Unit at Nationwide Children’s. He has been at Nationwide Children’s and The Ohio State University since 2004. He is also a clinical assistant professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. His clinical interests include glomerular and tubular disorders, hypertension and end-stage renal disease. His research interests include improving clinical outcomes in chronic kidney

disease, particularly in the dialysis and renal transplant populations. Dr. Patel is the local principal and co-investigator for eight active multi-center studies.
