The city council finally approved a new ward map for the City of Chicago. This year the map was completed in an effort to accommodate the overall population shift found in our City’s 2010 census report. The report showed

an increase of 25,000 for the Latino population. Although this meant many changes for the City, for the 10th Ward the remap resulted in a few minor changes.

4 New ward map for theCity of Chicago

Our ward still includes Hegewisch, East Side, Vet’s Park, South Deering, as well as the majority of the South Chicago neighborhood. Jeffrey Manor was an addition to the ward. As a whole, the map displays 17 white majority wards, 18 African-American and 13 Hispanic wards, an increase from a previous 10. The process, which takes place every ten years, needed at least 41 out of the 50 aldermen to approve the revisions; the final vote count was 41 to 8. If the group were unable to come to an agreement and at least 10 alderman proposed an alternate map, the decision would have been placed on Chicago voters next March. Six out of the 7 Latino Aldermen including, Mayor Rahm Emanuel as well as our 10th Ward Alderman, John A. Pope, were amongst those in favor of the new map. “As a result of the 2012 census Chicago’s 50 ward boundaries need to be redrawn to legally represent the new population,” said Alderman Pope. “In addition to the population, federal law also requires minority classes to be protected. I am proud of the actions that

my colleagues and I took, to draw a map that is legally sound and protects tax payers from potentials lawsuits.” Mixed feelings regarding the event were evident not long after the January 12th announcement of the remap plans. Emanuel’s response to the almost inevitable uproar: “It’s not time for the city to stop worrying about “boundaries” and focus on important matters.” The map claims to increase the number of Hispanic majority wards to 13. Federal law mandates special efforts to protect minority-voting rights. “I am very pleased to maintain the integrity of the 10th Ward. The new map looks almost identical to the previous,” said Alderman Pope. “While this process was an expression of change, I believe the result protects our community and allows for the greatest opportunity to continue moving our ward forward.”

Chicago Ward re-mapping?

What’s in it for me? Am I the only one in this city that feels I would rather vote for someone that could better do the job then someone solely based on race? I’m sure I am going to hear groans, but I am proud to live in a ward that the Alderman wasn’t elected solely based on his race. We live in a growing Hispanic community, but I will be honest with you, I am glad that it isn’t a predominately Spanish speaking one. We currently are one of the only wards in Chicago that has an Alderman that isn’t the same ethnicity as the majority of its residents and in my opinion I think that makes us unique. I couldn’t believe how racially driven the re-mapping process was. Do the various racial groups in this city really believe that they won’t be properly represented if not for someone of their race in city hall? If this is true it leads to a much larger problem in this city. In 1959 the u.S. Civil Rights Commission declared Chicago the most segregated city in the country. Over 50 years later, not much has changed. I challenge you to find a city that has more precise dividing lines based on race. Why must our city continue to be this way? Do we actually live in a city that we need to be surrounded by those that look like us and think like us? When I went away to college in my youth, the first thing they tried to do was immerse me in groups that were “like me”. Wouldn’t you like to join the Hispanic group this, the Mexican social that? Even then I said, “No thank you”. College, or at least for me, was about meeting new people. My goal was to make

new relationships while immersing myself around new groups of people. It wasn’t about clinging to certain faces or languages. The university I attended even went so far as to choose a roommate for me that grew up in Jeffery Manor, assuming that it would make my transition easier to live with someone from close to where I grew up. The odd thing about that experience was that although the school thought they were making it easier for me, the truth is, I didn’t have many black friends in high school, if I had any at all. My high school was very segregated. Those that were bused in from the Southeast Side mostly kept to themselves. Those that were bused in from the predominantly Spanish speaking West Side mostly kept to themselves as well. The school, thinking they were helping me transition, actually opened me up to whole groups of people and experiences that I may not have chosen on my own. This was 20 years ago, and I wouldn’t be surprised if these policies are still in place today. Protecting the voting interests of minority groups is a federal requirement for redistricting, but the new map shows population numbers alone did not determine the outcome. In the end, the new map gives the Latino Caucus the 13 majority-Hispanic wards it wanted, a gain of three. The Black Caucus has the 18 majority-African American wards it sought, a loss of one. But so what? Despite many of these areas already having long standing elected officials that mirror the predominant race of their ward, research continues to show that heavily segregated minority neighborhoods have less access to health care, quality education and employment opportunities

than other areas. So,

what are we doing here? If doing everything to ensure we have elected officials in office that are the same race as the voters in the ward means so much, why is so little progress being made? Ald. Pat Dowell of the 3rd Ward said, “Our position was to maintain African-American political power.” Ald. Howard Brookins of the 21st Ward and the Black Caucus chairman said, “If we are the plurality in the city, why shouldn’t there then be more black aldermen than white aldermen?” What?!? The current city council members were voted into office were they not? If the Black voting community or the Hispanic voting community wanted to elect more of the same wouldn’t they have? “The 33rd Ward and the 14th Ward have been super-majority Latino wards for 10 years and they’ve elected and re-elected Dick Mell

and Ed Burke,” said Ald. Ricardo Munoz of the 22nd ward. So why all the arguing and fighting for more Hispanic majority wards Alderman Munoz? Over the last decade, Chicago’s black population plummeted by more than 181,000, the white population fell by nearly 53,000 and the Latino population grew by about 25,000.Chicago continues to be one of the most segregated cities in the uS and this remapping is a guarantee that it shall remain so for at least another decade.

There are some really good fight scenes between Jason’s character and Clive’s character. There is also a really good shock moment that might knock your socks off. The cinematography throughout is well done as it helps keepyou tuned in. The story, can get confusing at times. You might find yourself asking who really is the good guy in all of this. The movie is chocked full of cover ups and top secrecy that will make your head spin. This is a good thing and a bad thing. It is both interesting and intriguing. If your an Action movie fan, I say check it out.

The institute is a school committed to further enhance the Martial Arts and to develop its students both mentally and physically. Master Luciano Medina, founder of ChampYon Taekwondo uSA, is a 7th Degree Black Belt certified by the World Taekwondo Federation (Kukkiwon) and has over 30 years experience in the Martial Arts. Master Medina’s primary motivation is the apparent personal development of the students of the ChampYon Taekwondo uSA. In addition to learning self-defense, Taekwondo teaches individuals to be strong, confident and disciplined. Parents are positively affected by the effort and accomplishments of the students. ChampYon Taekwondo uSA has created a system of Olympic training that has built many athletes to compete in the highest level of Olympic Taekwondo. Due to the success of the athletes competing in the National and

International arena, Master Medina was selected coach of the year 2010 by the united States Olympic Committee (uSOC). On February 20-24 the uSAT will host the uS Open in Las Vegas. This is an International Taekwondo Tournament where Olympic and world athletes from over 40 countries come together to compete in the sport of Taekwondo. Master Medina has selected fifteen students from ChampYon Taekwondo uSA to compete in this event. The cost of the trip is extremely expensive and sometimes it is necessary to do some fundraising. He is reaching out to the community for support in one of the fundraising efforts, which will be the raffling of an IPod touch. The guests for this episode were Alderman John Pope as well as David Hagen and Hoyt Hudson of the Chicago Clean Energy project. Topics of discussion were the Chicago Ward Remapping, the new Southeast Side elementary school, Governor Quinn and Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s “ M i l l e n n i u m Reserve Project”, the Chicago Police gun range, new business projects coming to the 10th ward as well as how it will affect the job market in our community. The second segment was devoted to the proposed Lucadia Chicago Clean Energy project

where we discussed what gasification is, how our community was chosen for this project as well as further discussion with regard to environmental impact this proposed plant will have in the 10th Ward and many more questions. Graciela Robledo, Organizer of South Chicago New Communities Program for Claretian’s, has been newly named as a Chicago Conservation Corp (C3) Leader. Chicago Conservation Corps recruits, trains and supports a network of volunteers that work together to improve the quality of life in neighborhoods and schools with projects that protect our water, clean our air, restore our land and save energy. As part of Robledo’s project with Low-cost Weatherization & Education, she was able to provide free classes in South Chicago and distributed over 150 weatherization kits to families over the last two years. This past December, Robledo, in conjunction with 10th Ward Alderman John A. Pope’s Office and the South Chicago Chamber of Commerne, was able to off weatherization training and kits to parents of John L. Marsh School’s PTA.

Claretian’s has also partnered with LIVID (Lower the Incidence of Violent Injuries and Deaths). LIVID is a coalition of health care providers that has committed to healthier Chicago communities. With being angered by the health and community cost of youth violence and having witnessed the experience of Chicago youth presenting for care of violent injuries LIVID plans to make an impact. It has identified South

Chicago as one of the communities in which to partner with and produce a referral system for victims that arrive at their trauma centers. Claretian’s and LIVID have committed to meeting on a monthly basis with South Chicago service providers. Cease Fire will also play a part seeing as it will have expanded from not only Beat 423 but Beat 422 in the 7th Ward as well. Claretian’s has hired an outreach

team that consists of two outreach workers and a supervisor that will be providing assistance and referrals to victims of shooting and/or stabbing violence at trauma centers. Lastly, Claretian’s will be holding their annual Tenth Ward Green Summit and the kick off for it will be April 27, 2012. It will highlight future green and eco-friendly community developments, events and activities that will be happening around South Chicago. The summit is scheduled for the entire month of May, is free to the public and will offer exhibits on healthy eating, gardening techniques, energy efficiency services, recycle (appliance) drop off, community tours, volunteer opportunities, stewardship days, safety and green events and recycled art activities. This year the faculty, staff and administration at George Washington High School have another reason to celebrate. Ms. Florence Gonzales, Principal of George Washington High School, was informed that her school has achieved level 2 status on the Chicago Public Schools Performance Policy Report.

By achieving this status that makes Washington High School a school in “Good Standing” according to the CPS rating scale. It is great news for the hard working and dedicated educators at George Washington High School and a testament to the extraordinary and tireless leadership of Ms. Gonzales.

Ms. Gonzales was modest in her comments about the wonderful achievement and said that it is not only her efforts but that “this could not been achieved by her alone. It is also attributed to great teachers whose passion for teaching continues to raise

the bar for George Washington High School students”.

Nicholas Green, 2008 graduate of Washington High School and a parent/community volunteer, said that he has watched Washington High School completely change over the last 8 years. He also went on to say that when he started as a freshman “the school was up for grabs, with unsafe hallways and daily fights. Today, the school is orderly with students who feel safe and are focused on learning and not worried about their personal safety. Students have taken pride in the school and the building is filled with school pride.”Walking the halls, Ms. Gonzales points out the student created mosaic in the main hallway which leads from the student entrance to the main office area. She proudly says, “This is what my students created; I am so proud that they have taken ownership of their school.”

The school has served the community for 54 years and during those 54 years Washington High School has had a

few setbacks, but is now definitely on an upswing. Currently the enrollment at Washington High School is at 1,550 students, which is about 100 more than last year. There has been a definite trend in rising enrollment at this neighborhood school which serves the communities of South Deering, East Side and Hegewisch.

Parents are concerned that students are receiving quality education, within a safe building, with a good learning environment to maximize their child’s educational experience and prepare them for success beyond high school. Washington High School has certainly provided this for our community. Congratulations to Ms. Florence Gonzales and her dynamic teachers.

Girls Volleyball is back on the East Side this winter and in full swing with two leagues going. One is at Mann Park in Hegewisch the other at Calumet Park on the East Side. Many of the same teams play for both leagues so volleyball season for many parents, coaches and students means more time being spent at practices and looking forward to games being played at both parks. The Mann Park league has six teams playing for the 5th/6th graders from various schools in the southeast neighborhood even extending it this year to the town of Burnham. Games for the 5th/6th grade teams are played on Mondays starting at 3:45 p.m. till about 6 p.m. in the downstairs gym. The most recent games involved Burnham vs. Grissom with Burnham taking the match with 2 wins and 0 losses. St. Florian played against Jane Addams with Jane Addams taking the match also in 2 games. Our Lady of Guadalupe (O.L.G.) took their wins vs. George Washington Elementary. All the girls played very well and seeing as they are only on their second game of the season, anything can happen with the standings. On Friday, January 13, 2012 the following schools played for the 7th/8th grade teams at Mann Park. Washington vs. Burnham, with Washington taking the win, Jane Addams won vs. Hegewisch, Grissom 8th won vs. Taylor and O.L.G. won vs. St. John. As of January 14th O.L.G. is in first place undefeated with 3 wins and 0 losses followed by Washington Elementary 2 wins 0 losses, Grissom is in 3rd, Burnham in 4th, Jane Addams in 5th, followed by

St. John in 6th, Grissom (7th grade) is in 7th place and bringing up the rear is Hegewisch and Taylor Schools. The 7th/8th grade girls play at Mann Park on Friday with games starting at 3:45 p.m. As some schools took part in the Mann Park League, some of those same schools also play for the Calumet Park League, which had their first game in January on Friday the 13th. No bad luck there for the Marsh teams as their 7th/8th grade team played a fierce game. Marsh’s 7th/8th grade girls played vs. Sacred Heart in 3 games. Marsh’s first game was a point for point confrontation with Sacred Heart taking the lead 17-13 with only a minute left to play. Marsh had the ball and scored 3 points making the score 17-16 with Sacred Heart still in the lead. Marsh needed only one more point to tie the game but the buzzer gave Sacred Heart the first game win. Unlike the back and forth first game, this time Marsh’s, Diana Flores, serves 20 straight points showing no mercy with every serve. Sacred Heart tried their best to return to no avail, even calling a time-out to hopefully break Diana’s streak but no luck. The final score of the second game was 23-9 as the time ran out on the clock. The tie-breaking 3rd game 15-8 was won by Marsh making a great comeback. The 5th/6th grade Marsh team also had good luck on this Friday the 13th by winning against Taylor (Green) with final game scores of 25-10 and 25-7. On a side note the Marsh 5/6th graders won 1st Place in the City Wide Chicago Public School League. All games at Cal Park are played on Friday evenings starting at 6 p.m.

Bowen Wrestler Earns Historic VictoryBy Abraham CarreonONT Sports Correspondent


“It’s a great accomplishment,” Darling said of becoming just the second four-time champion. “I’m glad I did it.” Harrison accomplished the feat between 1975 and ’78 while at Tilden. He met Darling a few weeks ago when Bowen wrestling coach, Ron Wilson, invited Harrison to a practice. Wilson tracked Harrison down after looking him up on Google. He said that Harrison insisted he would keep tabs on Darling’s matches the rest of the season. Harrison maintained that on Sunday when he was there to pass the torch to Darling. Darling wasn’t the only Bowen wrestler who was successful. The school had two other champs in 126-pounder, Rudy Johnson (25-1) and 220-pounder, DeQuence Goodman (29-0). Bowen also had one 2nd place

finish, one 3rd place finish, two 4th place finishes and one 5th place finish, putting Bowen in 2nd place out of the 62 schools that participated in the city championship. Lane Tech came in first to earn its third consecutive Public League Title. Goodman is the top-ranked 220-pounder in Class 2A. Last year he brought home Bowen’s first wrestling medal since 1942 when he came in 4th place. This year, Wilson expects big things from both Darling and Goodman.“I think they’ll win state, absolutely,” Wilson said of his star wrestlers’ chances in the state finals. When Wilson first went to work at Bowen, there was no wrestling team in place and he had to rebuild the wrestling program from the ground-up. “We had no uniforms, shoes or headgear when I got my first coaching check which was $2,800,” Wilson said. “I bought new uniforms, shoes and headgears…In order to run a team, you have to look like a team.”

Early on, there were only a few kids that showed up. Wilson told them to bring a friend and the next day the team doubled. He quickly found success as Bowen won a regional title in Wilson’s second season. The sport has also helped the students academically. During his tenure, Wilson said that 15 students have received full scholarships to a four-year college. Two of those students have already graduated from college and one is coaching with him today. Wilson is a real believer in giving. He says that he pays for two of his former wrestlers’ school tuition. He also wishes for the community to give as well. Currently, there are wrestling programs in Niños Héroes and Bradwell Elementary. He hopes to get sponsorships in order to purchase equipment to start programs in other elementary schools. As far as the near future for Bowen’s wrestling team, once Darling and

Goodman move on, Wilson believes they’ll be just fine. “I have 9 to 11 really good guys coming back,” he said. “We should be good.”The Regionals will be held this Saturday, February 4, at George Washington High School. Sectionals will be held the weekend that follows and the State finals take place the weekend following Sectionals.
