Governor Quinn and Mayor Emanuel Announce $42.2 million Investment at Olive-Harvey College

Governor Pat Quinn and Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a $42.2 million investment to build a new Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TDL) center at Olive-Harvey College. The project will be bankrolled by $31.6 million from Gov.

Pat Quinn’s capital construction program and by $10.6 million in funds built into the five-year, $479 million capital plan at City Colleges. “By investing in our community colleges, we can better prepare Illinois residents with the skills they need to compete for these high-technology jobs,” said Governor Quinn. The project is also

expected to create nearly 300 construction jobs. “We’ll put people to work building this new facility and we’ll empower students with state-of-the-art tools and training they need to go out and get these good-paying jobs.” The new TDL center is expected to prepare students for the job growth predicted in those fields over the next decade. “This will be the only Transportation, Distribution and Logistics school in the state of Illinois in a field that in the next 10 years will produce 28,000 new jobs,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Good jobs in Chicago, this is a system and a school built for the kids and the adults of the City of Chicago and the surrounding area to get those 28,000 jobs.” “That’s what today is really all about. It’s taking the educational opportunities available at our community colleges and turning them into jobs and careers,” said Governor Quinn. He went on to put it succinctly by saying this type of program is, “a meal ticket to the middle class.”

Graffiti ArtStudents will be introduced to the history of "Street Art" and the artists who create it. The group will decide on a theme they would like to express and design a mural. The new TDL building is another addition to the “colleges-to-careers” makeover under way at City Colleges and brings a much-needed expansion to our local community college. “That’s not a graduate of a high school in the room next door. That’s a veteran. That’s a person laid off. That’s a person between jobs. That’s a person going to night school, all saying, ‘This is 28 bucks an hour. I want to move up the economic ladder,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The 200,000 square-foot building will replace 112,000 square feet of “temporary” classroom space adjacent to the main Olive-Harvey building at 10001 S. Woodlawn. The new building will replace existing structures that were built to be used temporarily in 1970, “Olive-Harvey went up, [but] they never came down. 42 years later, the temporary is coming to an end,” said Mayor EmanuelConstruction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2013 and end two years later.

As part of the plan to support neighborhood development, a new venture from UK-based social innovation thinktank The Young Foundation, is helping to use TelePresence to share ideas and shape a vision for the area that will identify and develop a strategy to promote the Social life of the surrounding area. At a recent press conference on the development site, Cisco EVP, Wim Elfrink, stressed the iconic nature of the project in Chicago, for which Cisco will help prepare and present the Master ICT Plan, working closely with stakeholders such as architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill llP (SOM). Key considerations here will be a focus on the services provided back to the neighborhood

and how to monetize the investments to help drive the economic, social and environment value of the project. Sandi Jackson, long-time resident and Alderman of Chicago’s 7th Ward was enthusiastic about the potential of this collaborative approach coupled with the education initiative announced by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel. The plan is to drive the adoption of Science Technology, Engineering and Math Skills in five high schools located strategically throughout Chicago. Alderman Jackson rightly sees this as a critical foundation for the future of the area and the employability of its citizens. John A. Pope, Alderman of the 10th Ward, whose father worked in the Steel Mills of the Southside, stressed that the project is now moving from concept into the implementation phase. The first visible sign of the new development is already appearing as construction of Route 41 along the lakeshore moves ahead. Not only will this help to accelerate the development of the project, but it will also have a tangible benefit for citizens in surrounding neighborhoods who have lacked decent transport links for the longest period of time.

A lot of great work in community revitalization is already being driven and recognized by LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation), community leaders and organizations throughout Chicago. Susana Vasquez, LISC Chicago’s executive director attended the press event and highlighted the imperative to harness innovative approaches to transforming the local economy. As she succinctly put it the previous evening in introducing the 18th LISC Neighborhood Development Awards Dinner: “We can and must move forward from being the city of big shoulders to the city of big ideas.” Further innovation is already coming to Chicago through 1871, the u.S.’s first Smart Work Center powered by Cisco technology. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn visited on Wednesday last week for a tour. This new downtown Chicago hub for tech startups which will open its doors on May 2nd is supported by Cisco and partners CDW, Comcast and the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center. Its guiding design principles are to promote entrepreneurship, collaboration and greater technology innovation throughout the city. Following the successful model

pioneered by Cisco in the Netherlands, France and Korea, entrepreneurs visiting 1871 will be will be able to rent desks on a month-to-month basis and will have the unique ability to engage a broad workgroup of other entrepreneurs, spawning a new paradigm for how work gets done and how innovation happens. For those of you wondering, 1871 was the year Chicago re-built itself after the great fire, becoming the inspirational city it remains today. At the Lakeside event, Woodbury also stressed that all parties are looking into how the new IT infrastructure being put in place could benefit the neighborhood and act as a catalyst that could ultimately help to create new jobs. In addition to fostering smarter ways of working in the city, the project will be a showcase of environmental sustainability. Renewable sources such as wind, solar and waste-to-energy are all being considered as part of the mix to reduce the energy footprint of the development. Cisco looks forward to partnering with these stakeholders to help shape opportunities for today’s and future generations of Chicagoans.

Beginning March 2012 a gas main project will take place for residents who live between 95th and 100th street, Avenues H –N.

The purpose of the project is to replace cast iron pipes to ensure long-term safety and reliability of our natural gas system.

Alderman John A. Pope, along with representatives from Peoples Gas, held a meeting late last month, in order to inform effected residents of the upcoming project.

In recent years Peoples Gas began replacing 40 miles of cast iron and ductile iron main with modern polyethylene pipe. last year the company decided to accelerate those efforts and double the amount of cast iron pipes that are in need of replacement.

For local residents, this project will be complete by December 2012. For the entire city the project will continue to take place over a course of 20 years and will replace nearly 2,000 of natural gas pipes.

Throughout the duration of the project,

residents that will be directly affected by it will receive continuous notices by mail in order to stay updated and are expected to schedule a consultation to discuss options for their individual home meter.

Residents with gas meters located inside of their home will need to have it placed outside of the home.

They will be expected to schedule a 15-20 minute appointment with a Peoples Gas representative in order to look at the location of the existing meter and to go over options for relocating it. A second meeting will result in the relocation of the meter.

Peoples Gas will work with each individual home when placing meters in order to make accommodations – making the meter the same color as the home, or even concealing it with bushes, in order to make the meter not as noticeable.

The benefits of the project are said to include greater safety, reliability and lower costs in the long run for residents. While work is taking place on each street, parking will not be permitted. Have you ever heard the story about fleas in a jar? If you never heard this story before, let me share it with you. I’m pretty sure

everyone knows what a flea is and how high they can jump, so it isn’t hard to guess what happens when you put fleas in a jar and replace the lid. Of course, the fleas do their best to jump out; however the amazing thing is after a short period of time the fleas begin to realize that they cannot escape. After continuously hitting the new ceiling placed on them they learn to only jump high enough so as to not continue to beat themselves against the lid. Even more amazingly is that, after a short while, you can actually remove the lid, and the fleas will not jump out.

How many of us are like those fleas in the jar? Why do we have so many high school drop outs in our city? I have heard so many conversations where people speak to one another in something that honestly sounds like another language. Made up words and horrible grammar, trying to sound “cool” like everyone else. I will admit I am guilty of doing that myself when I am around certain friends but it got me thinking. I know that when

I talk that way I am just joking around with them. But, do they understand the distinction between speaking with friends and trying to be a part of what we like to call, “the real world”?

Why is it that some people are bullied just for being smart? If a kid talks with proper grammar and with intelligence to back it up he or she is called names and picked on. Where did our society go so wrong? What sparked it? Are you guilty of judging people based on the way they talk or dress? It’s almost impossible not to. I know people shouldn’t be defined by how they talk with their friends or the type of clothes they choose to wear but, once again, it’s hard not to. It makes me wonder about all of the highly intelligent youth we must have in our community that are actually afraid to be smart and that makes me feel actual sadness.

Why do certain members of our community look at jobs that may require some higher education with folded arms saying, “Those jobs aren’t for us!” Who told you they weren’t for us? Because a job may require someone to actually have accomplished educational goals in their lives it automatically excludes our residents? Obviously these are all metaphors but I ask you, how did so many of us become like those fleas in the jar? Do some of us actually seal the lid on that jar ourselves?

When was the last time you looked up? Is that lid even still there? Look up, believe there are no limitations, and jump as hard as you can… You just might be surprised as to what you and all of us are capable of.

REVIEW: Disney’s John Carter is an exceptional motion picture. For the true cinematic mixologist in all of us, allow me to enumerate the ingredients that make John Carter special: Add 2 teaspoons of Star Wars, a tablespoon of Star Trek, half a cup of Cowboys and Aliens, 2 cups The Time Machine and Voila, we have a science fiction extravaganza! Although he is an unfamiliar face in Hollywood, Taylor Kitsch (John Carter) wields a coarse smoky voice that somehow gives him an heroic edge. John Carter is nothing short of amazing and its star makes a wonderful impression on audiences. Sure, it reeks of an alien version of Prince of Persia but who really cares? The end result is a romping good time a la’ the magicians at Disney. Disney films never cease to amaze me, they only get better with time and technology. Outstanding students from across

the nation are taking part in a unique leadership development program held in 30 cities across the country. Jessalyn D. Cabrales, a local resident and outstanding student at Annunciata Elementary, was one of 50 chosen to attend the National Young Leaders State Conference (NYlSC) held in Chicago Illinois. NYLSC accepts outstanding 6th through 9th grade students who demonstrate maturity, academic excellence and leadership potential. Jessalyn was nominated to attend by her teacher, Ms Karen Finlon. “She is very well rounded in her life and in her work and a very good leader,” said Ms. Finlon. “She is accomplishing great things for herself.” “We are extremely proud of our daughter for having been recognized for her outstanding scholastic achievements. This was by far a great experience for her,” said Jessalyn’s parents, Alfredo and Clelia Cabrales. “She came away with the skills she needs to succeed in school and gained new perspective on how to view her role as a leader in our community.”

The NYLSC is a unique, life-changing program for students in one of the most critical phases of their lives and of their education. This intensive four-day program took place over four days, from March 15, 2012 through the March 18, 2012 and was held specifically for the most highly motivated students in the nation. The NYLSC curriculum challenges its scholars to step forward with conviction and confidence, to grasp the concepts of self-awareness, social awareness and self-reliance, to develop strong relationship and communications skills and to understand and practice responsible decision making. “It was an intellectual experience. They taught me skills that I can use now and in the future,” said Jessalyn. “These skills ranged from communication, conflict resolution, decision making, goal setting, group dynamics, leadership techniques, project management, self awareness and appreciating diversity.” The Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC), the organization that

sponsors NYLSC, seeks to identify students with demonstrated leadership potential and a history of academic achievement that will contribute to the strength and character of the conference and organization. “The steps each person takes in discovering his or her own leadership strengths can be a very personal process,” said Marguerite Regan, Ph.D., Dean of Academic Affairs for the CYLC, the organization that sponsors NYlSC. “The National Young Leaders State Conference will help students get at the heart of their innate talents and skills and will also help them to identify how best they can serve within their communities.” Jessalyn finished by saying, “I’m very grateful for the opportunity and for the knowledge that I gained from this leadership conference.” We here at ONT are also proud of Jessalyn’s achievements thus far and look forward to sharing her future accomplishments. George Washington Elementary School (GWES) and Our Lady of Guadalupe School (OLG) battled for 1st place in the Mann Park 7th /8th Girls’ Volleyball League Championship on Friday, March 9, 2012. It was a fierce game after OlG had been in 1st place for most of the season. They had to finish the season playing GWES who had been putting up a fight all season with some very talented players of their own coached by Kelly Everett and Laura White, who are both teachers from the school. The girls’ from OLG, led by sisters Laura and Elena Carrillo, have been coached by them for the past four years in the Mann and Calumet Park leagues as well as the Catholic leagues. The championship game began with GWES’ Brianna Alba serving first then followed by Jessica Torres slamming the ball back on OLG’s side of the net to start the game at a score of 0-2, GWES in the lead. OLG’s Erika Galan serves and makes it tied at 2-2. Back and forth volleys go on between OLG’s Erika Galan, Stephanie

Covarrubias, Jazmine Hernandez, Theresa Pena, Bianca Garcia, Ana Ayala, Aimee Romo while on the GWES side we have Brianna Alba, Mariam Zaki, Brittany Trejo, Jessica Torres, Vanessa Chavez, lauren Castaneda and Mia Alvarez. OLG’s Jazmine Hernandez scores a point to make it tied at 7-7. With less than six minutes left on the clock, it could’ve been anybody’s game. However, OlG took the lead as Jessica Torres (GWES) and Vanessa Chavez (GWES) gave it great effort in the front battling OlG. The score soars to 13-8 with OLG in the lead and four minutes left in the game. Brianna Alba (GWES) serves again making the score 16-11. Mia Alvarez is then put into the game for GWES but OlG insists on making more points. A minute left in the game and OLG scores 4 more points while GWES scores 3 to end the game 20-14 as time ran out making OlG the winner of the first game. Game 2 begins straight away with OLG’s Erika Galan serving and easily makes the first 2 points. GWES’s Jessica Pena, Brittany Trejo, Jessica Torres and lauren Castaneda begin their fight for game two with hopes of going to a third. Jessica Torres makes a great play for GWES at the net to tie the game up at

3-3. Both teams make a great effort throughout, but as they play back and forth and with two minutes left in the game both teams are tied at 14-14. Jazlyne Reyes comes in for GWES and the score is tied 15-15 with thirty seconds left. OlG’s Theresa Pena serves and 2 points are scored but GWES get the side out. The score is now 16-17 and OLG needs to win it by two points but GWES now needs to tie the game as the final seconds show on the clock. GWES tried their best but OLG gets the final point and the score is 16-19 giving OLG the Championship 1st Place win. GWES played an excellent and fun to watch game against this hard-to-beat

team and finished in 2nd Place in this Mann Park league. Good luck to all the girls next year!
