January 22, 2017 ~ 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 21, 2017 Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of the Mountain, I will be marking my 10th year in Long Valley on June 13th. For the past six years I have served as your pastor as well as at St. Mark’s. I truly considered myself blessed to be able to minister as pastor to two very special parishes. I find it difficult to believe that I have been pastor of OLM for six years. The administration of two parishes has been a unique challenge and opportunity for me as a priest. As I get a little older I believe that it is time to turn the administration over to some else. After many months of prayer and reflection I asked Bishop Serratelli last July to allow me to retire in June 2017 and he graciously granted my request. The normal retirement age in our diocese is seventy (70) and this March I will reach that milestone (?). My formal date of retirement is Thursday, June 29. My last weekend with you at OLM will be June 19. There are other reasons why I am retiring and this has to do with my family. Over the course of the past several years three of my four nieces and nephews and their children have moved to Florida. This July I will marry my youngest niece who lives in Florida and after the wedding my sister and brother in law also plan to move from New Jersey to Florida. I intend to spend part of the year in Florida and part in NJ. I plan to be an active senior priest in both Florida and New Jersey and help in parishes as long as I am able to do so. As I write to you I am filled with several different emotions. Sadness, excitement, anxiety and adventure. I have truly felt at home at Our Lady of the Mountain Community. You have been very supportive of me over the past six years. I appreciate the response you made to the renovation campaign which took a lot of time and effort. Your generosity is well known and I considered it a blessing to minister among you during the past six years I am also excited about the prospect of taking a new path in my priestly ministry. I truly believe through my prayer that this is the right decision to make at this time. I also am anxious because I know my decision will result in change at Our Lady of the Mountain and change is always challenging. But change is always a part of our lives and can lead us to new paths and discoveries. Finally I also feel a sense of adventure. As many of you know I like to hike and I have not kept it a secret that when I do retire I intend to take a road trip to various parts of our country to see some great scenery, do some hiking and visit some friends and family along the way who live in various states literally from coast to coast. Of course these are my plans and I still trust that God’s will be done in my personal life. I wanted to let you know of my decision at this time because it is not a secret especially among my fellow priests and I wanted you to hear from me the reasons for my decision. I ask you to say a few prayers for me during the coming months. God Bless you, Fr. Joe

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK… When we are rooted in Christ, we are rooted in an ancestry of many who have gone before us. We stand in the light of the teachings that come to us from Scripture, and the teachings that come to us from the wisdom of the Catholic community. We stand in the wisdom of Jesus Christ, the one who becomes for us the person and hope in which we are rooted. WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC… We are Catholic because we believe: During the greater part of his life, Jesus shared the condition of the vast majority of human beings: a daily life spent without evident greatness, a life of manual labor. His religious life was that of a Jew obedient to the law of God, a life in the community. From this whole period, it is revealed to us that Jesus was "obedient" to his parents and that he "increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man."
