Teachings from this Week’s Liturgy - Deacon Jose Moronta
Jesus Christ continues teaching his apostles
Two Sundays ago, Gospel reading contained the first of three instructions to the apostles: “If you are to be a follower of Jesus you must deny yourself, take up your
cross and follow in His footsteps.” Last week we heard the second instruction: “If you wish to be a leader, you must remain humble and be the servant of all.”
This week we continue with this second instruction.
«…whoever is not against us is for us… Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his re-
ward…»
If someone is doing a kindness to the disciples, it’s because they recognize that they are Jesus’ emissaries. Note the parallel with welcoming a child for His sake in
last week’s gospel.
«…Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin…»
This is the catchword for the remainder of this reading. The “little ones” may well refer to members of the community of the disciples; just like the little child of previ-
ous Sunday.
«…it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea…»
«…If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off… And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off… And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out…»
It is not a literal saying as the hand/foot/eye is not the cause of sin; weakness of will is.
In the first lines of this Gospel we may find the key to understand these sayings. John, one of the twelve presents the following case: “Master, we have seen one who
expelled demons by invoking your name and we tried to prevent him because he did not follow us”. Observe the use of the plural: we have seen, we have tried, we
were not followed. The expression ‘did not follow us’ or ‘was not of ours’ means that the exorcist was not a Christian.
The last verses have been most unfocused, having interpreted the scandal in relation to children and mainly in sexual matters. Clearly, we must affirm that Jesus
does not speak here neither of children nor of concupiscence, be it sexual or otherwise. The scandal Jesus is talking about is what the twelve can cause with an atti-
tude like the one exhibited in the case of the non-Christian exorcist. (“The victims of the scandal are the little ones who believe in me.”)
Since last Sunday we know that in this teaching session the child is a metaphor to designate all those who within the Christian community are unimportant or little
considered. The arrogant or haughty performance of the twelve, symbolized by the hand, the foot and the eye, is a scandal for these believers. The harsh and threat-
ening language of Jesus wants to be a warning and a brake on this performance. A teaching that is still valid for us…

Sing a New Song Unto the Lord at the Free Family Faith Fest
Our headline artist at the Family Faith Fest is one of the best known Christian music artists - Jeremy Camp.
Also performing at the Family Faith Fest will be faith-filled artists Colton Dixon, Sarah Hart, ValLimar Jansen and Ivan
Díaz. Gathering together as a community of faith, we will raise our voices and sing about God’s great love, mercy and
forgiveness and most of all, the hope that we have in our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Faith is Alive at the Free Family Faith Fest!
Prayer and the Sacraments will be a major focus of the Family Faith Fest. There will be a large “Faith Village” where
many people will gather to pray the rosary and to worship Jesus Christ through Eucharistic Adoration.
Priests will also be on hand to answer questions and to administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Bishop Gregory Parkes will celebrate Mass at 4 pm on the large stage.
October 20th, 8:00AM-3:30PM

Year of Prayer - Kevin Fritz, Director of Liturgy
Upcoming Year of Prayer Events
Thursday October 18 - 7 pm - What is Charismatic Prayer?
Another form of prayer to consider during our Year of Prayer is Charismatic Prayer.
Parishioner and Theology teacher Jaime Meyer will explain the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and how the Baptism in
the Holy Spirit has enriched her life and prayer since 1969. Jaime's sister, Patti Gallagher Mansfield, was present at the
inception of this movement/current of grace at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA in 1967 and author of the book
As By A New Pentecost. Included in Jaime's presentation will be an explanation of 'praying in tongues', an often misun-
derstood gift of the Holy Spirit. This will be an explanation of this form of prayer not an actual experience.
Friday November 9 - 7 pm - Taize Prayer Service
Christ is the center of Taizé reflection and the candlelight signifies that Jesus Christ has conquered the darkness of
death and sin. It is through Christ’s sacrifice that an offer of new life is given. Through beautiful music, elegant chants,
thoughtful scriptures and times of private prayer in silence, participants are invited to stillness and to listen for and to the
voice of God. One of the rules of Taizé as stated by its founder, Brother Roger, is to keep inner silence always, and you
will dwell in Christ for it is through inner silence that makes possible our conversation with God. (Br. Roger of Taizé)
A Call to Prayer: Continue on praying during the 40 Days For Life Pro-Life Campaign from Sept. 26 - Nov 4.
Continuing our reflections on the Eucharistic Prayer we move to the Intercessions. To intercede means to plead or peti-
tion on behalf of someone else. It comes from two Latin words: Inter meaning between and cedere meaning to pass or
go.
In the intercessions we pray for the whole church “spread throughout the world” (EP II). We pray for the pope, the bishop
of the local diocese, “the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own” (EP III).
We remember the entire world as “Lwe pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world” (EPIII), “Lthose
who take part in this offering, those gathered here before you, your entire people, and all who seek you with a sincere
heart” (EPIV).
The whole Church also includes the dead “who have gone before us with the sign of faith and rest in the sleep of death”
(EP I). In “Lthe hope of the resurrection” we ask the mercy of God to “Lwelcome them into the light your face” (EPII).
This includes those deceased members of our family and friends but also “Lall the dead, whose faith you alone have
known” (EPIV).
Then we pray for ourselves asking “Lwhen our earthly pilgrimage is done, that we may come to an eternal dwelling place
and live with you for ever” (EP Various Needs) “Lso that freed from the corruption of sin and death, may we glorify you
through Christ our Lord” (EPIV).
We ask the intercession of the saints who have gone before us that “we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life” with Mary,
the Mother of God, St. Joseph her spouse, the Apostles and Martyrs, and “Lall the Saints who have pleased you
throughout the ages” (EPII) and “Lon whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help” (EPIII).
In this way “Lall of the human race are linked to honoring and commemorating the saintsLa reminder that the ultimate
purpose of our lives on earth is to join in the everlasting destiny of the saints” (Groeschel, Benedict J., Listening At Prayer
: 69).
The Eucharistic Prayer concludes with a doxology - a hymn of praise to God. It comes from two Greek words: Doxa
meaning praise and legein meaning to speak. We speak praise to God saying:
“Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is
yours, for ever and ever.”
The assembly gives its assent and affirmation to the whole of the Eucharistic Prayer by saying “Amen.” This is a Hebrew
word that means it is true and expresses acceptance.

Helping Hands for Senior Ministry - Recruiting Volunteers Now
Our ministry’s mission is to respond to the second greatest Commandment to “Love our neighbor”
(Luke 10:27).
We seek to provide specific services to senior members of our parish community who are in need.
We will serve by assisting with transportation to church, appointments or shopping (limited distances),
social visits, check in calls, light handyman help, and reviewing/reading difficult documents.
“Your strong love for each other will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
This ministry supports our Parish Mission to Orar (Love) and GiVe.
We know there are senior parishioners who don’t have family close by,
and that their lives and safety may be enhanced with support from their Parish Family.
Sign up after Masses and on our website www.stmarktampa.org
IMPORTANT NOTE: All Volunteers will need to meet the Diocese of St. Petersburg (DOSP) requirements
for fingerprinting; complete an on-line training program; and if volunteering to provide transportation,
have certain liability limits on auto policy.

Faith Formation & Youth Ministry
Ask Jared: What are some ways to
be more happy and joyful?
First understand that there is a difference be-
tween happiness and joy. While happiness is a
feeling that we often can't control, true joy is a
gift from God; in fact, it is one of the Fruits of
the Spirit (see Galatians 5:22). This kind of joy
cannot be taken away even by difficult circum-
stances. The best way to cultivate this lasting joy is to build
up your relationship with God. It may be helpful to think of
joy as an acronym: Jesus, Others, You. Set your priorities
in this order, and you will be on your way to attaining joy.
But we all know that it is not always that easy to find joy,
especially when happiness, which is so easily stolen by
external circumstances, is hard to come by. When going
through a tough time, surround yourself with as many posi-
tive influences as possible. People who are optimistic, sup-
portive, and uplifting can help you feel better. Even making
sure you give yourself an opportunity to spend time out-
side in the sunlight and fresh air can make a big differ-
ence. You may also have to force yourself to think of good
things in your life, especially when you reach a point where
it has become easier to focus on the bad things. My last
secret to joy is gratitude. Giving thanks naturally changes
your mindset, helping you to be more joyful in any circum-
stance. In Philippians 4:4-14, St. Paul shares his advice on
this subject. It's an amazing passage, and I would encour-
age you to read it!

“Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ,
amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.” MARK 9:41
Does your life reflect the life of Jesus? Remember, we were made in His image. We
tend to forget this. When others see you, do they see the face of Jesus? When you
look at others, do you see the face of Jesus in them?
recompensa" MARCOS 9:41.
¿Tu vida refleja la vida de Jesús? Recuerde, fuimos hechos a Su imagen.

“Dijo Juan a Jesús: Maestro, hemos visto a
Feliz Semana!!!
