Welcome to the 2018 Lansdowne Club Journal. I’ve now been Chairman since February and would like to take this opportunity to thank fellow Members for the support you have given me since taking over this role from my predecessor, David Whitehouse.

Many of you have emailed or dropped into my office to offer your thoughts, comments and, on occasion, criticisms of how the Club runs. All of these are taken on board and I gladly welcome feedback on how we can improve things. As I said at the AGM, at the heart of the Lansdowne is, of course, its membership. We must never forget that, fundamentally, we are a Club run by Members, for Members and as we evolve and adapt to meet the rapidly changing needs of the 21st century we must always try to serve the requirements of the 8,500 Members who are part of the Club.

One thing that has struck me since assuming office is the sheer scale of the Club; this is a complex organisation with many moving parts which must all run smoothly together. At the helm of this great machine is our Club Secretary and CEO, Kate Simpson who joined at the start of the year. Kate has an impressive background in hotel management and real estate in both London and New York. She has made a fantastic start to her tenure at the Lansdowne and is working hard to get to know as many Members as possible; I hope you will have chance to meet with her soon.

You may not be aware, but almost 50 fellow Members are involved in the active governance of the Club, serving as members of the Council, Commissioners or members of our committees. We provide our time free of charge and this dedication of service helps “oil the wheels” of a well run Club. To find out about current Council Members, please see the article “Our Council” on page 6.

I was privileged in September this year to host a “Golden Anniversary” luncheon for Members of over 50 years’ standing and you can read about this very special event on page 16. It was a real pleasure to meet so many Members who have been calling the Lansdowne “their Club” for over half a century; many of the stories they had to share were fascinating. Moreover, it was a delight to find myself sitting next to Mrs Margaret Freeman who, having joined the Club in 1947, was the oldest Member present. Over lunch we discovered we had graduated in the same subject from the same University and had a mutual friend in common! Such is the joy of making new friends in the Club.Development, refurbishment and maintenance continue across the Lansdowne in order to keep our landmark building in good condition. The biggest forthcoming capital project will be the redevelopment and improvement of the Courtyard, which we hope to complete in the forthcoming years and which you will be hearing more about soon. This summer the Courtyard was incredibly busy and it is clear that this is a much-valued space for Members, a ‘gem in the heart of Mayfair’, so it is vital that we keep it special. I will be in touch with further details on this project in due course.

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the dedicated and supportive staff we employ. They ensure that our Club runs smoothly day in, day out, and do so in a professional and courteous way. As a traditional London Club we follow the established practice of not charging gratuities on our bills, but instead ask Members to contribute annually to the “Staff Fund”. This fund acts as a bi-annual ‘tip’ which is shared between all staff, as a thank you for their service. Please do contribute to this important recognition of our hardworking staff; it is very much appreciated.

Finally, may I extend my sincerest thanks to Members and staff for making 2018 another special and enjoyable year for the Club; I look forward to seeing you in 2019. My very best wishes to you and yours for the festive season and for the year ahead,

JAMES NORTH

Page 4: OUR MEMBERS FOODIE HEAVEN OUR COUNCIL CLUB EVENTS · Welcome to the 2018 Lansdowne Club Journal. I’ve now been Chairman since February and would like to take this opportunity to

Dear Members, It’s hard to believe that I have been at The Lansdowne Club for ten months now; on some days it seems like much longer, yet on others I realise I still haven’t seen the Club through a full 12 month cycle and every day brings a new surprise! 2018 has certainly been eventful and I would like to thank everyone for welcoming me so warmly and for supporting me in my new role. It has been a delight to meet so many Members in my first few months, and I look forward to continuing to engage with Members on a day to day basis.

The dedication displayed by both Members and staff is truly admirable. Extra special thanks must be extended to our Chairman, Council and committee members who give up a considerable amount of their own time to contribute to the running of the Club, keeping it the special place that it is. The value of this enthusiastic investment from Members and staff alike is clear to see.

We are undoubtedly a social club – indeed, it’s our lively social scene which sets us apart. This year has seen some fantastic events including Women of the World, the Barolo Dinner and our Parisian Jazz and Tango Cabaret Night. I had the pleasure of attending the Lansdowne Summer Party, and it certainly exceeded all my expectations. The Courtyard was transformed, and I received so much positive feedback complimenting the fun atmosphere, the great food beautifully displayed, and excellent service. Many Members even commented it was the best Summer Party they had ever attended! By the time this letter goes to print our annual Winter Ball will have taken place; it’s Bollywood themed so is sure to be a vibrant affair.

This year’s festive season will see a variety of fun, Christmassy-themed events at The Lansdowne, starting with Thanksgiving at the end of November and running right through into 2019 with a party on New Year’s Eve and a New Year’s Day Brunch. For further details please check the new ‘Festive Season’ webpage in the Member’s Area of

our Club’s website. If you’re thinking further ahead then the Social Scene Diary included with your Journal mailing outlines next year’s events; there’s a lot to look forward to so make sure you plan your diaries accordingly!

It is my goal to ensure that The Lansdowne remains a haven for Members and a place that staff are happy and proud to work in. One of the Club’s greatest strengths – the diversity of its membership – is also one of its greatest challenges. What a 25 year old female Member values in the Club is probably quite different to what a 65 year old male Member might consider most important. While we are a traditional Members Club with traditional values, it is also important that we stay current, attempt to keep pace with changing times, and remove obstacles to Members using their Club. This summer, based on Members’ feedback, Council took the decision to open the Courtyard on the weekends and to relax the weekend dress code on the ground floor of the Club, and the response has been very positive.

I am frequently struck by how much goes on in the Club, and how difficult it is to keep Members up to date with everything that is available to them. For example, did you know that we now offer a Champagne Happy Hour in our Piano Bar every Monday and Friday? Or that if you successfully propose a new Member to the Club you receive a £50 voucher, redeemable in the Dining Room or Piano Bar?

People are at the heart of the Club: Members and staff alike. 2019 will be a year focused on continuing to invest in our people, with a range of new and exciting initiatives to engage and entertain Members, and a programme of training and development for staff. While we may not know what lies ahead on the political or economic front, we can be sure that the team here at the Club will continue to do their utmost to make it a place of warmth, welcome and fun. I am pleased to be part of such a tenacious team, and am excited for the year to come.

With best wishes,

KATE SIMPSON

The Lansdowne Club is owned by its Members so it’s vital that our Members are involved in the decision making and management. It’s our 12 Council Members who lead the strategic direction of the Club, giving their own time for the betterment and the future legacy of The Lansdowne.

Here we meet our Council to find out exactly who they are and what the Club means to them…

MEET theCOUNCIL

WHY/WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE CLUB?

RICHARD PARRY: Together Rachel and I joined the Lansdowne, at the insistence of an old family friend, who was our proposer, for several reasons:

I joined because of the Club’s Squash, the Club had been the home of the British Open, now the World Championship, and the opportunity to play on the super courts. Equally important was the “home from home” that the Club still provides after a very long and hard day in the City. These, coupled with the ability to meet old friends, meet new people and enjoy all that the Club offers proved to be an irresistible force.

Rachel joined because of the Club’s long tradition of holding men and women in equal esteem, the afternoon tea and especially the opportunity to meet her friends and business colleagues to pursue the success of her charity, the Queen Mother’s Clothing Guild. Following the death of the Queen Mother the Guild now holds its AGM in the Club.

ROGER HEPHER: I think it was about 1986. Mainly for the swimming pool. Getting in required surviving an interview with the retired military man who was then the Secretary.

DANIEL BONNER: I joined the Club for a few specific reasons in the early 2000’s; squash and swimming as well as events such as piano recitals, films and wine tasting. What clinched it for me was the standard of the coffee, drinks and food as well as the ever-present Racing Post on the Crush Hall table helping me to supplement my income.

Sophie Morrison

MARSHA CAREY-ELMS: I joined the Lansdowne around 2010 as part of the scheme to encourage the Head Teachers of certain well regarded schools to become Members. The idea behind this scheme being to use this as a conduit to try and introduce young people who might find themselves in London post school to join and enjoy the benefits of belonging to one of the Capital’s best clubs. The lifeblood of the Club is partly in opening up the exciting opportunities that club membership offers to people who had never thought that a London club was for them.

STEPHEN COONEY: I joined in June 2007, primarily as a sports user. I moved company to work on Baker Street and wanted to join a club with a gym. My girlfriend (now wife) is a member of the RAC club, but I thought this was too far from work. After marriage and having a daughter the gym attendance has fallen away. However with an expanding waist line I’ve started training again with one of the Club’s personal trainers.

MICHAEL DIXON: My wife and I joined the Club in November 2002; I had recently sold my Paddington flat and then landed a contract in London within a few weeks. I had previously dined and attended formal events at the Club and a forces’ Member, whom I had known for many years, proposed me and I subsequently passed the vetting committee.

Since then we have never looked back, enjoying good food, good company and constantly improving premises. Who now remembers the “bedroom with single sharing bathroom,” with any degree of pleasure?

JAMES NORTH: In 2003. I’d graduated and moved to London and was looking for a job. A friend worked in One Curzon Street and invited me to join him for drinks one evening to offer some career advice...he then proposed me and the rest is history!

SOPHIE MORRISON: I think it was around 1999. My father signed me up as a gift upon graduation I think in the hope I would meet an eligible bachelor….

WHY DID YOU JOIN THE COUNCIL?

KATHERINE O’FLYNN: I joined the Council as I wanted to give something back and also because I feel that I represent the profile of many Members and would be able to reflect their views, needs and desires with respect to the future direction of the Club.

GERALDINE DOOLEY: I was nominated to join the Council by the Chair of the Sports Committee as Council wanted a Sports representative. This is my last year as a Council Member. I have enjoyed my time on Council and have met other Members through it who have become friends.

FRASER TENNANT: In 2005 I became Treasurer and was co-opted onto the Council where I served as Treasurer until 2013. During my eight years as Treasurer, the Club completed several MasterPlan Projects which included the rebuild of the Main Kitchen, Courtyard and Brasserie refurbishment and the new Gym. The Gym project was the biggest capital project ever at the Club which was over £3.5 million. In addition, the Club’s cashflow moved from a negative of £3 million to a positive of £2 million.

“Perhaps a dubious claim to fame is to have been successfully elected to the Council in both of the Club’s only two contested Council elections!”RICHARD PARRY

MICHAEL: For nine of our sixteen years’ membership I had served on the Members’ Committee and for the last six of those had been chairman. Work on the Members’ Committee was most interesting because we were close to complaints, suggestions, comments and criticisms from fellow Members. Whilst the staff run the Club under the direction of the Chief Executive and Secretary, following the strategy determined by the Club’s Council (as the board is known), such a group can aid the smooth running and subsequent development. Indeed I had been involved with four of the Club surveys and so saw using my experience as a natural progression to contribute to our wonderful Club.

ROGER: Having been on the B&P Committee for a couple of years, I was curious about this interfering body that kept challenging the good things the Committee was trying to do.

DANIEL: Simply, I was asked, after having shown an interest in the past. As a strong believer in getting involved I thought it a good idea to help ensure the Lansdowne continues to be run for the Member’s benefit and ultimately to reflect the Member’s needs. It is only right that responsibility for that should rest with Members and ensure the Club’s unique character is not squandered as we modernise.

SOPHIE: I love the Club and joined Council to give back, to ensure that it retains the values of a Club whilst moving with the times and to make sure that the Club stays ‘healthy’ so future generations can enjoy it as much as I enjoy it right now.

WHAT’S YOUR PROFESSION?

STEPHEN: I work for a leading financial and advisor company specialising in operational restructuring. Basically making underperforming businesses more profitable.

MARC CORBETT: Originally a qualified architect, I now work as a project director on design led urban regeneration projects /developments.

FRASER: My profession is chartered accountant with a specialty in real estate asset management. So, after being a Member for a few years I was asked to join the Finance Committee in 2003.

KATHERINE: I’ve worked in the Higher Education sector for 15 years, primary focused on business and management education.

GERALDINE: My day to day job is as an orthodontist (I straighten teeth) in London and twice a month in Ireland. My work environments are very different: very busy NHS practice in NW London, private practice in west London and Irish country practice in Co Kildare. The majority of my patients are teenagers- they can have their moments - but an increasing number of adults are having treatment.

MICHAEL: Having retired from the international telecoms consultancy that I founded in the nineties I continue as the trustee of two charities, as a county councillor, the chairman of a town council, member of a fire authority and with other voluntary work.

JAMES: I work for Santander, the Spanish-owned international bank, as their International Engagement Director in the UK.

I have been a Member for 18 years now and still my favourite thing about the Club is this special, private oasis of calm in the centre of London. A place where I can pop into the Business Centre, have a drink or meet friends. I hope that this will never change.FRASER TENNANT

“I explain to my friends that the Lansdowne is a great place to be a Member of - it has its rules but they add to, rather than detract from its atmosphere. You’ll get out of it what you put into it. If you don’t like the rules don’t join the Club!”GERALDINE DOOLEY

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE CLUB?

MARC: The opportunity to meet new and like minded people, a beautiful building with a fascinating history and an oasis of calm in the West End.

MICHAEL: My favourite thing about the Club is the wonderful staff. From our very first visit they have made my wife and me so welcome - and they continue to do so. It is their care and attitude that draws us back, time and again. In the competitive club world they succeed as a result of their hard work and determination.

MARSHA: I love coming to the Club as often as my rather frenetic life allows and I always feel so welcome by the staff and Members. It is a place where women feel perfectly at ease and I have never been made to feel uncomfortable as a woman on my own and I have subsequently made a number of really good friends here and am pretty

confident that I will see a friendly face whenever I come into the building.

ROGER: It’s a comfortable haven in the middle of the hurly-burly of town.

STEPHEN: I like the fact we offer a range of services to Members from accommodation, sports, dining, business space and a fantastic social programme. The latter is varied and offers something for everyone. I particularly like things food and drink related – we’ve had some great tasting events and dinners showcasing certain parts of the world.

SOPHIE: The people and staff really make a Club and that’s my favourite thing about the Lansdowne. Even before I was elected onto Council, there was always a smile and hello upon entering the building, walking into the bar or the Dining Room. The staff really get to know the Members so it always feels like home.

Michael Dixon

WHAT DO YOU TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE CLUB?

MARSHA: I love the fact that I have ‘a home’ in the very centre of Mayfair to which I can invite family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances. I know when they meet me at the Club we will feel relaxed and enjoy being part of an elegant safe haven in a beautiful building which has its own fascinating history. What more could a Tottenham girl want!?

DANIEL: Mostly that it’s my Club not theirs and they will have to behave if I invite them along!

RICHARD: Every time I walk into the Club I’m always reminded of the many, many happy moments over the years when the Club has been the home and occasionally also the cause, of so many super events, casual and formal meetings and general enjoyment. I tell my friends and acquaintances that the Lansdowne is one of life’s great treasures and especially tell them that the Lansdowne is also one of the best places in the world to visit and also to enjoy good times with your family and friends.

The Lansdowne is a great Club and Rachel and I are so very pleased and also feel very lucky to have be part of the vibrant membership of this super Club.

SOPHIE: I tell them that I love the Club. It’s not cool or trendy, like Annabel’s or Soho House, but it’s a wonderful haven in the centre of Mayfair full of genuinely great people. I sometimes pop in for just one quiet drink and find myself still there, on a comfy sofa, chatting away at midnight.

The food is good, they make a great cocktail and there are some really fun events too – although I may have a slight bias on the last point!

MARC: Come for drinks.

The Council are enlisted to represent the membership so please familiarise yourself with those featured in this article and feel free to contact them should you have any concerns surrounding the Club.

Anyone hoping to join the Council next year may write their name in the election book, which will be displayed from the end of April 2019, and requires at least twelve Members to sign their support of him or her.

Roger Hepher

Marsha Carey-Elms

JAMES: The sheer variety of things going on each and every day in the Club. Since becoming Chairman I’ve spent a LOT of time in the building and there is always so much activity.

Gregorij Von Leitis photographed by Letizia Mariotti

Currently, Sarah lives in Saudi Arabia lecturing at the biggest female only university in the world: Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University. Princess Nora has around 6,000 students, all women; ‘They’re really determined’ Sarah reveals, ‘Most of them work. They’ve got families, husbands, parents, children, assignments and exams and they still get through it all – the determination is remarkable.’

‘Living in Saudi Arabia as a woman is so much easier than I thought it was going to be’ she admits; ‘women have huge amounts of power here but it’s different power’. Sarah is quick to challenge the perceptions often perpetrated by the ‘western media’, drawing on her first-hand experience when arguing with her British friends. She doesn’t shy away from debate though as she believes this is a catalyst for learning; ‘it’s interesting to exchange experiences, we all have different perspectives and different experiences and we all learn from each other.’

Similar to Sarah, Member Gregorij Von Leitis also believes in the importance of learning from others, in particular learning from those who are different to oneself. In fact, Gregorij has spent most of his life dedicated to the transfer of knowledge; he founded ‘Elysium: Between Two Continents’, an organisation that aims to share theatre and create an artistic dialogue between the USA and Europe (Gregorij travels frequently between New York and Germany but is most happy when he’s in London his ‘second home’). Additionally, with the Elysium Theatre Company he created the program ‘Theatre for the Homeless’, giving marginalised individuals the opportunity to go to the theatre and he regularly stages the works of composers and writers who were persecuted during the Holocaust; he affirms ‘people learn through the texts of others, it gives us direction’.

Perhaps one of Gregorij’s most endearing traits is his readiness to accept and welcome everyone; ‘We should think about people together and not as nations’ he states firmly. For Gregorij part of the Lansdowne’s charm is attributed to the diversity of the membership, ‘I love that when I come to the Club I see all different types of people’. He elaborates ‘in the Club we speak to other people,

Sarah Fraser may only have joined the Lansdowne Club in May 2018 but already feels like it’s her home; ‘I wanted somewhere I’d belong, where I walk in and everyone says hello.’ Having lived and worked across three continents Sarah, self-admittedly, has had an ‘iterant lifestyle’ throughout adulthood so sought a base in the UK.

if you think someone looks strange then you should speak to that person and make a connection, we learn from everyone we know. I do that daily, I speak to new people, it’s one of the reasons I love the Club.’

U35 Lansdowne Member Sophie Mcgregor echoes Gregorij’s idea that it’s the amiability between Members which makes the Club so special. It was these sentiments that led her to join the U35s’ Committee: ‘I started using the Club a lot and meeting more people and I thought that I could give something back. Phoebe [Topping, Chair of the U35s’ Committee] was very keen to move the U35s away from being a cliquey group who weren’t very sociable. I think it had a reputation and that’s something I wanted to change.’

When she’s not attending U35s events Sophie can often be found in our Dining Room, the Business Centre or the Sports Area. As a triathlete and keen swimmer, she finds our gym and Art Deco swimming pool particularly valuable; actually, Sophie’s only criticism of the Sports Area is the few vegan dishes on offer. It was lack of alternative options in the food industry which caused Sophie to launch her own healthy pancake brand: ‘Griddle’. Together with her flatmate, Sophie sought to fill the gap in the market ‘I was training for a half marathon at the time. Pancakes were something that we always loved to make but they weren’t time efficient; when we tried to buy something that was pre-made they were full of additives and sugar so they don’t taste very good. Even in speciality shops there was still nothing… we decided to write a business plan and take the plunge, we got some really positive feedback early on that we were on to something.’

In response to Members’ feedback our Food and Beverage department have decided to explore our menus and see if we can diversify to suit all. Sophie welcomes the changes, especially in our Courtyard where she believes we are ‘keeping up’ with industry trends; ‘ I think they’re being creative with the offerings and relaxing the dress code and offering food service on weekends is really a big step up. It’s moving in the right direction!’ Of course, the Courtyard is also the location of our U35s’ monthly Friday drinks, an event Sophie is keen to promote ‘New Members or those who don’t often come to events should definitely come to the U35s’ events’, she enthuses ‘it’s a great way to meet others!’

By Sarah Plail

Griddle is fundraising. If you’d like to find out more please visit @griddlepancake.

‘I’ve met people at events, we’ve had drinks together, breakfast together and swapped emails, we’re meeting for drinks in a couple of days…It’s almost like a big house party!’ SARAH FRASER

One of the most delightful aspects of the Lansdowne Club is its vibrant and rich history. Our long-serving Members are a very important part of what makes the Club special. On 7th September 2018 a special luncheon was held in honour of Lansdowne Members with over 50 years standing. All attendees enjoyed a lovely afternoon filled with discussion and reminiscence.

Dear Ms Simpson,

I am writing on behalf of my 85 year old mother, Georgina Clayton, née Buchanan, to thank you for your kind invitation to the Golden Anniversary Luncheon at the Club in September. My mother felt very honoured and touched to be invited and had she lived nearer would have loved to have come. However, she is now finding traveling more tiring and feels it would be too much for her and so, with regret, she sends her thanks but will not be attending.

She wanted me to send a few words of her memories of the Club which, given her birth year of 1932 must date back to the War years, in the early Forties.

“My first impressions of the Club were of being taken there on my way to boarding school in Kent and meeting my mother’s various cousins in the Club. It often seemed to coincide with the RHS show which I used to go to with my mother, Barbara, (Lady Buchanan) and I have remained a keen gardener all my life.

My mother was a Member and it was very much a family orientated Club. I was made a Member myself when I was 18 and used to go to various parties in London. Later when I had a flat in London and was working in Christie’s, I used to go to the Scottish reeling evenings and often brought a friend, which were great fun and I have fond memories of.

Living in Scotland with my own young family we often used it as a base for family trips to London and more recently I had both my 70th and my 80th birthdays at the Club.

My daughter was also a Member for a time and used to swim in the fabulous Art Deco pool having known it before and after its renovation. My daughter now tells me that as a child she dreamt of having her wedding there as we always walked past the Ballroom to our rooms at the back of the Club. The timeless elegance of the Ballroom and romance of the Powder Room struck her even as a small girl! She particularly remembered the wonderful deep vintage baths with Art Deco chrome fittings, and vitreous panels, sometimes threadbare but always huge clean towels and very very hot water!!”

Lansdowne Anecdotes by Andrew Findlay

My grandfather, Jim, was a founding Member of the Club in the 1930s and lived there throughout World War 2, and my mother’s family were Members from the 1940s. Both my parents thus regarded it as a home away from home and my father, Charles, felt very honoured to be elected Chairman in 1967, a post he held until 1988. I have many happy memories of the Club but all the best stories came from my father:

He told a great story about staying in the Club during the war and watching what he thought was the building of the underground railway for spiriting the Royal Family away from Buckingham Palace to the MI5 building in the event of invasion. I think this was perhaps just imagination, but a lovely story nonetheless.

His tenure as Chairman had an inauspicious beginning: the Royal Aero Club (which had been a lodger since 1961) promptly moved out, saying they didn’t believe a farmer would be capable of running the Club. Their decision only increased my father’s determination that the Club would survive the hostile financial and political environment of the time: this meant a fair degree of austerity to keep membership subscriptions affordable, with any money spent behind the scenes on the fabric.

In 1972 he pulled off the coup of buying the freehold, his biggest contribution to the Club’s survival. He told me the banks had very little money to lend at the time, but he eventually convinced them it was a good deal: the loan needed was £220,000 but the building owned outright was immediately worth £1.5million.

He was very keen on the family aspect of the Club and lowered the age at which children could be brought in to 6 (happily around the time I turned 6!).

We had a game of squash as often as possible and he said that the first televised squash matches had been filmed in the Club because of the viewing stands on the main court. This ended abruptly when the BBC refused to pay for the privilege.

He was very aware of the history of the building, and told me that the Americans kept on making higher and higher offers for the building, which they badly wanted as their Ambassador’s residence. They were, of course, rebuffed out of hand and eventually had to settle for Regent’s Park.

After he stood down as Chairman in 1988 and then as Director in 1997, my father stepped down right away, not wanting to tread on the next generation’s toes, and he was very honoured that the Findlay Room was named after him. He passed away last October but was very happy that the Club had continued to grow and prosper so strongly.

MEMBERS of theLITER ATI

It’s not easy to get a book published but, proudly, The Lansdowne Club has a surprisingly high number of authors amongst our Membership. We meet five Members who have had works published recently to learn what inspires them to create:

KEITH HOLLENDER

Many Members will recognise Keith from his popular talk at March’s ‘Networking Breakfast’ event. Keith has been a Lansdowne Member for 15 years taking full advantage of the pool and dining facilities. He has worked for major companies, established others and developed the Unclaimed Assets Register (“UAR”). He has written three books on financial history culminating in the latest – “Financing the World” and has appeared on television and radio as well as being frequently quoted in the press.

Keith’s interest in old bonds and shares was first piqued during his time as a banker in the City of London. His business career has been varied; he has held managerial positions in banking and the automotive industry, in addition, both PwC and Ernst & Young employed him as a consultant during the Chinese and Russian bonds settlements in the late 1980s.

EMMA HOLLENDER

Writing evidently runs in the Hollender family!

Emma Hollender has also been a Lansdowne Member for 15 years. She swims every day, attends the occasional U35 event and enjoys using the new Business Centre with its excellent coffee! As a teacher, she was inspired to write a children’s book about the scholastic lives of ten-year-old triplet sisters – “School 3D”.

JOHN HOPKINS

‘My Lansdowne membership enables me, as a country Member, to have a London base where over the years I have been able to meet and eat with colleagues who I worked with in my London days. I have often gleaned information from them which has helped when writing of my cycling journeys in the UK.’ John Hopkins

‘Point to Point’ is John Hopkins second book on cycling. In it John chronicles his cycle ride from Britain’s most westerly point (Ness Point in Lowestoft) to the most westerly point in Scotland (the tip of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula). It is worth noting that John is in his seventies so his 650 mile journey was no easy feat, admirably he raised £5,000 for WaterAid and £4,500 for the Sheffield Family Holiday Fund during the course of his ride.

John has kindly donated a copy of his book to the Marketing Office. If you’d like to read it please email Sarah, the Marketing and Communications Manager at [email protected]

THE VERY REV DR. ERNEST E HUNT

Congratulations to The Very Rev Dr. Ernest E Hunt who recently published his 6th book in his terrorist series ‘The Eagle on Grosvenor Square’ which is partially set in The Lansdowne Club! The series is fictional but based on political current events. The Very Rev Dr. Ernest E Hunt explains how the Club helped him to write his latest novel:

‘After retiring as Dean of the American Cathedral in Paris, France, I began to write novels, settings of which have been in Paris, New York, and finally London. In my latest book about an attempted attack on the American embassy, ‘The Eagle on Grosvenor Square’, the Lansdowne Club was an important setting for the main characters as they tried to foil the attack. Because of the nearby location of the Club, I was able to describe the action in detail. Elsie and I have been Members of the Lansdowne Club since the 1970s and it has been a home away from home for us.’ The Very Rev Dr. Ernest E Hunt

DIANA DENNIS

Last year Lansdowne Member Diana Dennis published her first book: ‘All I Ever Wanted: Living With The Intrigue Of The Unsaid’ She explains what prompted her to take the plunge:

‘I wanted to write a book after my husband died in 2007. His childhood in North China in the 1930s fascinated me. Family life ended for him when he was 12, and my training as a psychologist prompted me to delve into his past. For example, Dick believed his mother had died when he was 2. He was told the truth when he was nearing 60! And that’s just the beginning... ’ Diana Dennis

The LANSDOWNE SOCIAL SCENE

‘Aurora Borealis’ Winter Ball

“Many people will walk in and out of your life,” former U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt once remarked sagely. “But only true

friends will leave footprints in your heart.” There are huge opportunities to make lasting

friendships through the Lansdowne’s bustling, thoughtfully organised social scene,

which is open to all of our eight and a half thousand Members.

U35s’ Moveable Feast

“We’re lucky in that we have a very sociable Membership,” says Lucy Mannering,

the Club’s Events Manager. “There are always the regulars at our events and

we appreciate their support, but we try to encourage new Members to come

along to make the most of their Club too.”

The Lansdowne’s Events team prides itself on the two big annual offerings, the Summer Party and the Winter Ball, but they also work hard organising the monthly gatherings and a programme of glorious Christmas events. Zara Desai joined the Lansdowne in April as Club Events Coordinator. Previously at Lincoln Cathedral, Zara is relishing the challenge of overseeing social happenings for another historic, but quite different venue. “There are two main Members committees that I am involved with which are the Social and the Under 35s Committees,” Zara explains. “So if they have an idea for an event, I make it happen.”

The Summer Party in the Courtyard and this year’s theme of Alice In Wonderland offered plenty of scope for creativity though Zara admits she was a little anxious in the run-up. “I would wake up in the night making notes of things I had to do.” she confides. She didn’t need to worry. One hundred and seventy guests were thrilled by the eccentricities of The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Walking into Wonderland through a curious-looking door and stepping across a black and white checked floor, they were greeted by actors playing the parts of Alice, The Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts and the White Rabbit. Giant tea cups were fashioned as food station tables, small bottles urged Members to ‘Drink Me!’ and the Lansdowne’s highly accomplished chefs pulled out all the stops for a specially-themed menu. “I was pleased with how it came together,” reflects Zara. Lucy confirms: “The feedback was really good. People said it was the best one yet.”

This year’s monthly Member events included a gin tasting, giving participants the chance to try seven different gins. Who knew that tomato gin tasted so good? Our Chocolate Discovery Dinner meanwhile offered guests the chance to explore the surprising versatility of the sweet confection. Canapés comprising white chocolate discs and caviar and a main course of venison cooked in chocolate were among the unusual recipes enjoyed by diners. In August, the Courtyard once again proved a fantastic setting for our weekly Al Fresco Cinema, with film fans enjoying movies such as the classic Casablanca on the big screen.

The Winter Ball, each November, sells out within minutes as Members clamour to secure the 250 tickets for the annual three course, black tie dinner. The theme of Bollywood has brought some exotic glamour to the occasion this year, with Executive Head Chef Neil Ramsey’s ingeniously conceived, Indian-themed menu and first class entertainment provided by a resident DJ and in-house casino.

“You have to get involved,” Lucy encourages. “Lots of Members come to our events on their own. Zara and I, and the Committee members, are here to introduce them to new people. Friendships are formed, which is always rewarding. Seeing Members have a good time is what I enjoy most about my job.”

Another highly sociable year at the Lansdowne will draw to a close with the festive diary. Christmas wreath making on December 4th is a new event, at which the Lansdowne’s dedicated florist Paul Furniss from ‘Petal to the Metal’ will guide Members step-by-step as they make their own decorative centrepieces to hang on their front doors at home. Our Christmas Jazz Night takes place on December 6th as renowned singer Tina May presents Swinging Christmas, a cabaret of songs full of festive cheer. December 11th’s traditional Christmas Carols and Cocktails will see a live choir lead Members in a seasonal sing-along. Finally, 2018’s events calender will end with a bang at The Lansdowne Club’s inaugural New Year’s Eve Ball.

CLUBS WITHINThe CLUB

Did you know that The Lansdowne Club has a variety of active clubs and societies? Enrich your life by joining one, or even more! There’s something for everyone, whatever your interests!

THE ARTS GROUP

The Arts Group has enjoyed another active year experiencing the incredible range of artistic events available in central London. Our varied programme attracts many of the Club’s arts enthusiasts. A few are professionals; others are amateur painters, musicians, writers or collectors. All are welcome.

We meet approximately once a month for a wide variety of arts events. Some show their work at the Club’s bi-annual Decorative and Fine Arts Exhibition.

During the past year we’ve welcomed specialists on topics that included Greek Artefacts, Indian Dance, Contemporary African Art, Children’s Literature, the Jerwood Collection, Sculpture, Jazz and Stained Glass. A highlight was our Arts Dinner with painter Ben Mosley. Outside visits included previews at local galleries, the Cinema Museum and Westminster City Hall where the Lord Mayor showed us the extraordinary silver collection and historical treasures.

Arts Group events are open to all Club Members and most are open to guests. Information is available on the Club website, on posters and in the Social Scene Diary. Our enthusiastic committee welcomes suggestions and offers of support. Do get in touch through Social Butterfly at [email protected] Marsh

NETWORKING BREAKFAST

The breakfasts are a great opportunity to learn about other professions, covering a broad spectrum of industries! From beautiful bespoke shirts to the history of bonds, the critical factors to create better career moves in just 10 minutes - to disrupting the financial sector; there have been some fascinating speakers this year and I look forward to engaging Members with the rest of this year’s programme of speakers.

The networking breakfasts take place on the first Wednesday of the month in the Thirties Room. You are welcome to arrive from 7:45am, the speaker commences their talk at 8:10am and post Q&A’s you can continue to informally network till 9am with coffee and croissants. Whether you are at the beginning of your career or retired, all are welcome as there is always something new to pique your interest.

You can check the speaker’s bio two weeks prior to the event on the Club Facebook groups and LinkedIn group as well as on the Club website.

Having chaired the Business Networking Breakfast for the past two years I have really enjoyed meeting so many different Members and their guests at the monthly meetings. I look forward to meeting even more Members and their guests at future breakfasts. Amanda Callis

CLUB SUPPER

Club Supper for some Members needs no introduction being a fixture in their diaries already but for our new or overseas Members it is something to be highlighted.

Each month, usually on the first Monday of the month, we meet at 7pm in the Piano Bar prior to moving to the Dining Room for a choice of a two or three course dinner with wine. For this we have our own menu and a selection of three or four dishes.

It is true to say some conversations can be very amusing, others very topical, but all are just as the Club was originally set up for, a social gathering. Dinner is usually accompanied by much laughter and it certainly brings everyone together for the evening. As we try to meet new Members and visitors we sometimes move around which is always interesting and can easily spark new friendships. It is not a problem to attend alone since many of our diners are on their own and everyone is welcome and included.

Since Club Supper falls at the beginning of the month it is really good to know if anyone is attending any of the events during the month that have caught the eye and wants to book, its a pleasure to meet and catch up again. To attend, do book with the Dining Room and as a regular I look forward to seeing you there. Penny Dussek

FILM CLUB

Come and enjoy an array of films with other film buffs at the Lansdowne Film Night. This year the Film Night was moved to the third Tuesday of each month and is still in the cosy Billiards Room. Not to be confused with the August Al Fresco Cinema in the Courtyard, the Film Night starts at 7pm with a short followed by a feature length film. The cost includes snacks, drinks, and of course, popcorn. Upcoming films for 2019 include the opulent Russian epic of scandal and romance, Mathilde (2017), the 1927 dystopian silent classic , Metropolis (with the rock music sound track), and constantly voted one of the greatest rom coms of all time, Pretty Woman (1990). LITERARY GROUP

The Lansdowne Literary Group was started in February 2016 by Krystal Fiksdal who is sadly no longer a Member. I took over heading up the group from her this summer. We are an informal, welcoming, multi-cultural group of people of all ages who enjoy discussing literature of all genres. Choices are made democratically and three months in advance. Those who wish, can join the mailing list to receive the monthly circular which details current and past choices and gives a brief synopsis of the last meeting. Meetings are held in The Sun Room on the last Monday of each month except December (rearranged slightly for Bank Holiday interruptions), start at 6.45pm and last up to two hours.

To give a flavour of recent books, one was “Home Fire” by Kamila Shamsie, a book inspired by and mirroring the story of Antigone and covering topics such as immigration, cultural identity and repatriation of Jihadi fighters. Our current choice is “Molecules of Emotion” by Candace Pert which recounts events starting in the 1980s: it covers medical ethics, the rivalry between research scientists and the long overdue acknowledgement of the overlapping of the different disciplines.

Do come and join us - on November 26th 2018 we will be discussing “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov. Louise Brown

REELING

Reeling is a great way to meet other Club Members and to enjoy a lively and convivial evening, so it’s no surprise that the Lansdowne’s reeling evenings, which have been running for some 40 years, remain popular with Members and guests of all ages. Held in the Ballroom once a month from September through to May, there is no need to wear tartan or to come with a partner to enjoy dancing the reels. At the start of the evening, tuition is given so that beginners can learn and improve their Scottish reeling. A light meal is served, which provides an excellent opportunity to mingle with friends and other reelers and after the meal, the pace speeds up and there is further dancing for the more experienced reelers.

Highlights of the London reeling calendar are the Lansdowne Reeling Balls that are held in June and December. A superb dinner is followed by the twirling of taffeta and tartan dancing to a live band into the early hours. Lucy Stuart Lee

BRIDGE

Known throughout the London Bridge scene for its more relaxed atmosphere, the Bridge Group offers regular evenings to Members who can play a bit or a lot. We comprise a full range of ages and abilities.

For the more confident player, we arrange duplicate tournament bridge on a Wednesday evening, with excellent sandwiches and drinks. This type of bridge removes the ‘luck’ of the deal, as everyone plays the same cards and the scoring is how relatively well players manage the same positions. The evening is run by a professional who can adjudicate or advise.

Once a month, we have our highly respected Master Class, where Mike Eden talks on a Bridge related topic and then some of the duplicate hands are dealt specifically to practise this topic.

For those who want an even more relaxed approach whilst improving, we offer a ‘Chicago’ evening on Mondays where the cards are dealt, but our professional teacher can help with the play. At present we don’t cater for absolute beginners, but we can arrange this.

You do not need to have an existing partner to come along and play. When Members want to arrange private bridge parties, the tables, cards and so on can be made available.

The Bridge Group has long been active on the London Clubs scene and only a few years ago, we won the Centenary Cup against the likes of the RAC and the Reform. We engage in bilateral matches with other clubs, such as the Hurlingham. The Inter Club matches are a great opportunity to represent the Club and meet up with friends from other clubs. No high profile wins to report so far in 2018.

In addition to our annual Summer and Christmas dinners with bridge for all abilities, we arrange an annual offsite residential bridge weekend if there are sufficient takers.Robin Bencard

GARDEN GROUP

In 2018 the Lansdowne Garden Group marked its fifth year of monthly excursions to remarkable gardens. The Garden Group enables Members to share common interests and extend their knowledge of a favourite pastime. Garden design is an art form and its history records transitions in taste inspired by imagination and ingenuity over time. A garden is an evolving work of art which changes from season to season, year to year, and decade to decade.

In 2018 the Garden Group visited gardens associated with professions, trades, crafts and service occupations. Some of the gardens had a direct involvement with the practice or business of the organization sponsoring them, while others were merely ornamental.

Founded in 1518, the Royal College of Physicians’ Garden provides a verdant home for 1100 plants used in medicine during the past and present. They supply local anaesthetics, treatments for diseases like swine flu, leukaemia, diabetes, cancers, asthma, and scurvy in addition to narcotics, hallucinogens, ecstasy, etc.

Two of the inns of court, the Inner and Middle Temple, have hosted pleasure gardens for centuries. The formal design of the Middle Temple garden, with a top terrace and walks, was laid out in 1591 and existed until the reign of William and Mary when the Dutch style was introduced. It comprises three rectangular lawns shaded by trees and demarcated by gravel paths. After the construction of the embankment in the 19th century, the garden was developed further to include the enhanced space.

Churchyards have always had gardens of remembrance inextricably linked to their function. Christ Church Greyfriars, originally a medieval Franciscan monastery near St Paul’s, was destroyed by the Fire of London in 1666 and rebuilt by Christopher Wren but again succumbed to fire during bombing raids in 1940. The present rose garden was planted in 1989 after the remains of the nave became a public memorial. Another major renovation, whose planting replicates the Wren configuration, occurred in 2011.

Many City Livery Company gardens are connected to trades such as supplying salt or selling gold (Salters and Goldsmiths) as well as crafts like plastering and brewing (Plaisterers and Brewers). Other City gardens are the province of service occupations such as hair dressing (Barber-Surgeons) or mail delivery. The Postmans Park is located where the former headquarters of the General Post Office stood. Opened in 1880, its name derives from the practice of postal workers spending lunchtime breaks there.BJ Rahn

Garden Group activities are posted on the Club’s website, in the Social Scene Diary, and in monthly emails. For further details, contact [email protected].

CHESS CLUB

The Lansdowne Club chess team has continued to go from strength to strength over the last year. A number of Members have joined the team, alongside existing familiar faces, and continue to enjoy regular social chess and friendly matches.

We hold regular monthly chess matches on the last Tuesday of the month for new and experienced players. There are also opportunities to play against members of other clubs in our regular social chess events. A few highlights from the season included close battles with the RAC and MCC.

DEBATING SOCIETY

Due to popular demand the Lansdowne Debating Society was relaunched this April and it’s definitely relaunched on a high! I’d like to thank all the Members that have contributed to the society in so many ways, through your loyal attendance, and stimulating conversation. I’d like to say a special thank you to Oscar Bicket for his outstanding contributions to our debates; he’s the Lansdowne debater of the year!

This year we hosted some big debates with motions such as ‘social media causes more harm than good’, ‘the gender pay gap is justified’ and ‘artificial intelligence causes more harm than good’. These were very well attended and there was a very vibrant and lively atmosphere too…that’s what we like to see!

Our regular debates tend to be on the last Thursday of every other month and are well attended by a fantastic mix of new and regular Members to discuss a range of topical issues.

Please do get in touch with Social Butterfly if you’d like further information and to keep up to date on forthcoming debates. We look forward to seeing you very soon! Marcus Warry

A PASSAGE to INDIA

“[India is] the one land that all men desire to see, and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for all the shows of all the rest of the globe combined.” MARK TWAIN

Diverse, surprising, colourful and chaotic…India is known for its vast beauty and wonder. Many visitors struggle to explain the rich sensory experience provided by the array of sights, smells and tastes on offer.

The Lansdowne has more than 10 reciprocal Clubs in India and over 200 reciprocal Clubs across the world, ensuring that however far away you are, you’ll always feel at home…

THE ROYAL BOMBAY YACHT CLUB

The Bombay Yacht Club was founded in 1846, and 30 years later - on the recommendation of Sir Philip Edmond Wodehouse and patronage of Queen Victoria - became known as Royal Bombay Yacht Club.

An additional clubhouse, designed by Mr. John Adams - and whose construction work was subjugated by Mr. F.E. Stevens was completed on 7th November 1896. The built up structure of RBYC combined English neo-Gothic with a Tudor half-timbered idiom; and presently includes thirty four residential rooms over upper floors - in addition to recreational, dining and banqueting arrangements on ground and first floor.

Having undergone sympathetic restoration Royal Bombay Yacht Club Residential Chambers received an award of merit in the 2013 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards.

“If you’d told me twenty years ago that I would be running a private members club in Mayfair I would have said why on earth would I want to do that?” considers Kate Simpson, the Lansdowne’s recently appointed Club Secretary and CEO. “I had the same impression that unfortunately a lot of other businesswomen have of private members clubs, which is that they’re stuffy and old fashioned. But I was curious enough to come and when I walked into the Club I thought, gosh, this is really nice. It’s not super fancy; it’s not stuffy in any way. There was a really warm welcome, the staff were lovely and it just had this really nice feel to it. I thought this is actually really interesting.”

The rest, as they say, is (recent) history. Kate took up her new role in January and while keen to evolve the Lansdowne, doesn’t want to lose the essence that so quickly won her over. “You learn that what’s most important is how comfortable people feel in the Club, what makes it a home from home,” she points out. “So that needs to be preserved.”

Kate entered the hotel industry in the 1990s at The Athenaeum Hotel in Piccadilly and then The InterContinental on Hyde Park Corner. Her career took her to Europe and around the United States over the next twenty years, including New York, where she was running a 770-room hotel on Times Square at the time of 9/11. “I did pretty much every job that you can do in a hotel, with the exception of being a maintenance engineer,” she says with a smile. Latterly, Kate sold residential real estate in Manhattan. “It became clear that all roads were leading back to London,” she explains. “I returned and married. The job at the Lansdowne came up and I thought I can definitely bring something to the table from my operational experience but it’s different enough to be exciting. I realised very early on, if you’ve got eight and a half thousand Members, you’ve also got eight and a half thousand opinions about how things should be run so it is a challenge. I have an open door policy and it’s important that I’m accessible.”

What KATE DID NEXT

The Lansdowne’s Membership is to be carefully increased to nine thousand. The Club was set up in 1935 as a social and athletic club for men and women and currently 63% of Members are male. As its first woman in the post, Kate seeks a better balance. “It would be nice to feel that we are as attractive a proposition for a woman,” she declares. “If the Club is going to remain relevant, it does need to move with the times. The food in the Dining Room is outstanding but I think it’s very important that we have healthier eating options too. There’s always room to improve service levels. We launched a trial of opening the Courtyard at weekends with a relaxed dress code that allows for smart jeans and polo shirts. It’s the way people live today and it’s about removing obstacles, though some parts of the Club will absolutely stay with formal dress code.”

The Courtyard renovation is among the tasks Kate will oversee. “You’ve got this hidden gem in the middle of Mayfair,” she enthuses. “The goal is to enhance it and make it somewhere that can be used year-round. Space has been identified for a new kitchen and in a couple of years the Courtyard will be a very beautiful space with a glass roof that can retract in the summer.”

A seasoned marathon runner and keen traveller, Kate Simpson admits there hasn’t been a lot of downtime recently. “I started out thinking I’ve got to go to every event but it turns out it’s really hard to do because we have so many,” she laughs. “I very much feel I’m a caretaker of this Club, trying to keep the best of what we have and to honour the traditions, while taking it to the next level, giving it some new energy and a new lease of life.”

The PEOPLE who MAKE the Club

“Staff training is absolutely fundamental to everything that we do,” emphasises Kate Simpson, CEO of the Lansdowne. “I do see a real opportunity to increase service standards and to deliver a really top quality experience.”

The recently appointed CEO is considering how the Club’s training platform, the Lansdowne Academy, might evolve. “I think there will be a fresh impetus,” she says. “We expect a lot of our staff and we need to equip them with the right tools. It’s about leading people effectively and developing them.”

Head of Human Resources, Jasmine Bosze, elaborates: “We are reviewing a lot of our areas of expertise, particularly around food and beverage. For example, additional training for our staff with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. They are also undergoing training in allergens awareness and responsible alcohol retailing and there is more of a concentration now on making sure that staff get experience of working in different areas. This means cross department training, to increase their knowledge of hospitality and to enable them to assist other departments where needed. We are reviewing our customer service training to give Members even better service.”

Dovydas Venkus is cited as an example of someone who has benefitted from this strategy. Dovydas started in Housekeeping, moved to Concierge and then took up further responsibility in the Sports Area’s reception where he is now proud to be Assistant Sports Manager. “It is about working together and working as a team,” Jasmine offers. “Creating a family feeling builds trust and respect, which are our values. I have an open door policy and people like to come to chat. This helps me understand them and I can represent their voice when we make decisions.”

Around forty per cent of the Lansdowne’s 125 staff originate from the European Union so Brexit is a consideration. “I’ve talked to our staff who may be affected and I have reassured them that we are open to diversity and that we are here to assist them and support them,” Jasmine points out. The Club retains Investors In People Accreditation, to be reviewed in 2019, and the strategy going forward is to increase the number of apprenticeships.

It’s been a busy year for the Lansdowne, with the arrival of four key members of the management team - Kate Simpson of course, but also Layaan Almenoar, who was appointed Sports Manager, Joao da Silva, the new Head of Food & Beverage and Charmaine Hayes the new House Manager. Among the staffing success stories is Svetlana Kozlova, who was named Employee of the Year. As Memberships Accounts Supervisor, Svetlana has enabled the smooth integration of two previously separate departments and enjoys daily interaction with the Members. She is so committed to her role that she commutes two hours to work. “At our Christmas party we always celebrate our staff and how well the year has gone,” Jasmine concludes, with her customary smile. “The reward for me is seeing our people develop and go up the ladder.”

DININGat the CLUB“Our Members are really lucky to have three different dining outlets at the Lansdowne, with three different identities” declares Karim

Yousfi, Dining Room Manager and Wine Selector. “None is the

same as the other and each has a different menu.” Karim and

Executive Head Chef Neil Ramsey believe that some Members

don’t realise the scope of the food and beverage offering in the

Dining Room, the Courtyard and the Aqua Bar. “The produce

we’re using is the best,” emphasises Neil. “We’re a British club

and around 95% of it is from the UK. We know the farms

where our meat comes from, we do our own butchery, our fish

comes from Brixham Market and is caught that morning. We

have great staff. We are at least 40% cheaper than restaurants

in the High Street and fantastic value for money.”

Having worked together for six years, Karim and Neil enjoy an amusing banter but quite clearly respect how each has helped evolve the Lansdowne’s offering for a 21st century membership. “We used to serve traditional old fashioned club food,” reflects Neil. “What we do today I would call Modern British. It’s about not overcomplicating things and it starts by using great meat and vegetables. We still give Members their classic food, often with a twist, and we can be more creative still on the A La Carte side. What I have tried to do is make the Dining Room and all the outlets somewhere where you’d come socially and celebrate on a special occasion, but use for every day eating as well.”

One of the most impressive features of the Dining Room’s renovation two years ago is its wine cellar, which holds 125 bins from around the globe. “We have very exciting, award winning, mostly old world wines which you can’t find at other restaurants,” Karim exclaims. “They are amazing value for money. The cellar is our pièce de résistance!” In March, an Italian winemaking region, visited by Karim on a fact-finding mission, was the influence for the first of three gourmet dinners held throughout the year. “I wanted The Barolo Dinner to interpret that experience,” he says. The starter was Smoked Salmon and Crab Ballotine, followed by a main of Tournedo of Veal Sirloin wrapped in Prosciutto, a savoury course of Baked Goat’s Cheese and a dessert of Hazelnut Panna Cotta.

The idea for November’s Port Dinner originated from Neil’s own research in Portugal. The Lobster Festival in June and July has become a staple of the Lansdowne culinary calendar. Diners enjoyed 450 whole Cornish native lobsters per month in early summer at a very palatable £29.95 each. “You won’t get that anywhere else in London for that price,” Neil Ramsey enthuses. A dining voucher early in the year reduces their bill by half. The window for using this will likely be extended to enable everyone to make full use of it.

Our recently appointed Head of Food & Beverage, Joao Da Silva (Jo), assures Members that the Dining Room can fit in with their busy daytime schedules. “Times have changed and we have to change with them,” Jo offers.

“The lunch culture nowadays is a 45 minute window. Two courses from the regularly updated Club Menu is guaranteed to be served within 45 minutes, for £19.95.”

The Piano Bar alongside the Dining Room makes an ideal setting for pre or post-dinner drinks but it can also be enjoyed as a destination in its own right. A jazz band plays on the first Thursday of the month and sumptuous afternoon teas are now available for £24.95 per person, featuring an array of handcrafted sweet and savoury items and a selection of bespoke teas.

Downstairs, The Courtyard and Aqua’s menus have been spruced up with healthier options. “We do 150 covers a day in the Courtyard,” says Theo Vlagkas, Assistant Manager of Food & Beverage. “We had an exciting summer. In particular, our hog roast event was amazing and very well supported. There are eight and a half thousand Members and they probably all want something different so it’s a challenge sometimes but we received great feedback.”

Curry Night, each Tuesday, serves up a curry and an artisan ale in the Courtyard for £16.95. Other offers include two steaks and a bottle of wine for £40 and a charcuterie board or vegetarian mezze, with wine, for £30. TGIF, from 6pm to 8pm on Fridays, gives Members 50% off their drinks bill. The promotions will continue but changes to the setting are afoot. “I am very much looking forward to the Courtyard refurbishment,” remarks Jo Da Silva. “We are hoping that the grand opening will coincide with the 85th anniversary of the Club, on May 1st in 2020. We are going to have a beautifully designed Courtyard structure and the option of a retractable glass roof. To be able to service that we are going to have a new kitchen infrastructure alongside which will also involve Aqua moving upstairs.” He adds thoughtfully: “It is very much a question of listening and understanding Member expectations and building that into a product and a service that they would want to experience.”

“I have always played sports,” enthuses Layaan Almenoar,

The Lansdowne’s recently appointed Sports Manager. “My main sport as a child

was football and I got as far as having trials for Fulham F.C. which cemented my

relationship with sports and exercise.” The new role that Layaan took on in December

2017 is an evolving one but he still fits in exercise three times a week. Squash, cycling

and indoor rock climbing, with his teenage sons, are all regular activities. “People say

they don’t have the time or energy to do exercise,” he reflects. “It’s well known that

if you start exercising and get into a regular routine, it can completely change your

energy levels. For me, nowadays it’s not about aesthetics and the way you look. It’s

about your general well being. I know the difference it’s made to my life.”

“Fencing is just great fun. Think of it as cardio with a weapon. It can be compared to HIT or High Intensity Training, the advantage being that you don’t realise you are working out. One hour or two - time passes in a flash and you go home aching with pleasure.” RUPERT DAVIES-COOKE

For much of his career Layaan has worked within the sports and leisure facilities of the hotel industry. “I enjoy interacting with people and helping them achieve their goals,” he explains. “You can really see results. When you see how exercise and training really changes people’s lives, it is quite powerful and it’s very rewarding.” Previously the manager of the health and fitness spa at The Rembrandt hotel in Knightsbridge, Layaan was attracted to the range and competitiveness of the sporting opportunities the Lansdowne offers. “What excites me are the sporting clubs we have, such as fencing, and the swimming and the squash tournaments that we’re involved in,” he says. “To be with the only salle d’armes in a private members’ club in London is amazing and to be involved in arguably the best squash team in London, is pretty special. The swimming club does very well too. So there’s a lot of kudos in the Club. The Sports Area is very well used but my objective is to increase participation in a lot of the sports that we do and to create some new clubs and sporting events.”

The Lansdowne plays host to a high level of ability within the fencing world. The Club’s coaches have trained to Olympic level and China’s national fencing team recently staged a demonstration in the ballroom. But that shouldn’t deter those new to the sport. “We want to get more female fencers involved and have held a beginners course that was really successful,” Layaan elaborates. “It’s quite a niche sport and a lot of people are scared about starting it because they’re not sure what’s involved. But the nice thing about a beginners course is that you don’t need any equipment or experience. You literally just need to turn up.”

A revised studio timetable aims to attract a wider demographic of Members, while the Lansdowne’s Personal Training team has received a boost from an influx of new trainers, to complement the long-standing expertise of its well-established instructors Jade Darton and Gillian Trozado. Following its renovation in recent years, our glorious, 25 yard, Art Deco swimming pool is enjoying a

new lease of life (it even has life-saving, hi-tech underwater cameras now to detect swimmers in potential difficulty). Under the fresh tutorship of a new swimming coach, who coaches every Monday, the Lansdowne has won a swimming gala with The Royal Automobile Club for the fifth consecutive year. The Club has also enjoyed further triumph in The Bath Cup, the oldest, Inter-Club squash league, coming top of its first division for the ninth consecutive year. Hopes are high too for our new resident cricket team, flying the flag for the Club in the recently established league, The Last Man Standing. “We want to make this a regular feature in our calendar” emphasises Layaan.

Key to sporting success of course is good nutrition; a focus of the Sports Area’s Aqua Cafe. “The menu will be much more orientated to healthy options,” says Neil Ramsey, Executive Head Chef of The Lansdowne. “We have started using more vegetable-based ingredients, such as quinoa, chargrilled aubergines, pomegranate seeds, artichokes and marinated tomatoes, and salads to which you can add proteins such as tuna, chicken and salmon.” So for those who are healthy and of a sporting persuasion, there’s no excuse for not being match-fit and participating in the sporting life of the Lansdowne. “Don’t be scared to get involved,” urges Layaan. “It’s a massively sociable way to get to know other Members.”
