THANKSGIVING Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them,
is the true measure of our thanksgiving.
~W.T. Purkiser
The pilgrims made seven times more graves than
huts ... nevertheless, they set aside a day of
thanksgiving. ~H. W. Westermayer
Once, when my feet were bare, and I had not the
means of obtaining shoes, I came to the chief of
Kufah in a state of much dejection, and saw there
a man who had no feet. I returned thanks to God
and acknowledged his mercies, and endured my
want of shoes with patience. ~Sadi, The Gulistan
MARRIAGE MOMENTS Feast of Christ the King: Thanksgiving is usually a feast of
family and food - but it takes a lot of work. "Are you the King
of the Jews?" (John 18:33) Don't let family hierarchy absolve
either of you from both being a servant and at least having
a moment of being King or Queen for a day this week.

PARENTING POINTERS "A mother's soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome
the ecstatic experience." (Emily Dickinson) Although written
by a woman about mothers, could this same sentiment be
said about fathers? Hopefully, yes. Check your language
and family life for unnecessary gender stereotypes this week.

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE Help St. James reach out to parishioners in need. If you are
aware of someone who needs a card of encouragement or
concern call Charlotte Lindmeier at 653-6274.

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Today’s Solemnity is more
popularly called Christ the
King. It is the last Sunday of
our Church year. In Church
terms, it is a relatively new
Solemnity, having been
established by Pope Pius XI in
1925. It was moved to this
final Sunday in our Church
calendar in 1970.
The idea of Christ’s Kingship
has much meaning to us. In
establishing it, Pope Pius XI
wanted the laity in particular
to be attentive to its importance and to learn from it.
The lesson (and this is reinforced in all of our readings on
this holy day) is that the Lord must reign in our minds, in our hearts, in our wills, and in our bodies. We have
regularly pointed out in these reflections that
stewardship is God-centered in nature.
Stewardship is a total way of life, a life of accountability
which acknowledges God as our Creator and God as
the owner of everything. We are merely stewards, or
caretakers of what is rightfully the Lord’s. Being
God-centered rather than self-centered requires
conversion of heart and mind. None of us can ever
completely achieve stewardship as a way of life; it is a
journey of a lifetime. As St. Bernard of Clairvaux wrote,
“The more I contemplate God, the more God looks on
me. The more I pray to Him, the more He thinks of me,
too.” www.thecatholicsteward.com
