‘Thanksgiving’ – is the time of the year when we gather with family and friends and feast on food and football with a simple yet profound appre-ciation of the many gifts and blessings we have received. Even though things aren’t going that well around the globe, there is so much for which to be thankful. Living with an attitude of gratitude will guide us through the snares of success, prosperity and ease and help us deal with lack, dis-appointment and pain. So, this Thanksgiving Day let us remember the blessings we have re-ceived from God, so that we can be a more thankful people every day. The reasons for having grateful hearts make up a long litany - the gift of

life itself, faith in a God who loves us and is very near to us, good health, a loving family, car-ing friends, opportunities to serve, food on our tables, roofs over our heads. Yes, we have our times of doubt, our aches and pains, our family conflicts, and our economic struggles. But in spite of all these challenges, we are incredibly blessed! Whether you gather with family and friends, in person or virtually, or are just by yourself, take a moment to pray. You may use the following prayer as you gather around the table to pray and give thanks…

God most provident, we join all creation

in raising to you a hymn of thanksgiving through Jesus Christ, your Son.

    For generation upon generation

peoples of this land have sung of your bounty; we too offer you praise

for the rich harvest we have received at your hands.

Bless us and this food which we share with grateful hearts. Continue to make our land fruitful

and let our love for you be seen in our pursuit of peace and justice

and in our generous response to those in need. Praise and glory to you, Lord God, now and forever. Amen.

(taken from the Book of Blessings)

    Happy Thanksgiving!! Fr. Simon

Events and Schedule for the Advent and Christmas Seasons

In a few days many of us will be with our families, maybe in a more subdued way this year, to come together on Thanksgiving Day in thanks and praise for all with which we have been blessed. Then, almost in the blink of an eye, on the weekend immediately following our Thanksgiving celebration, we, as a Church, turn our at-tention to Advent and Christmas. While you are putting the finishing touches on your Thanksgiving celebrations, we at QAS are gearing up to celebrate Advent and Christmas with joy and dignity following all the protocols in place during these trying times. The following is a run-down of the major events in place from now through Christmas: *indicates that the event is live streamed Nov. 26 – Thanksgiving Day – Masses at 8 am and our parish celebration of Thanksgiving at 10 am* Share Christmas: In light of COVID19 restrictions we are making available three different ways by which you can brighten the day for someone in need this Christmas season:

    1. You may choose to direct your gift to Catholic Charities by visiting the following website https://www.catholiccharities.net/Events/ProgramEvents/CelebrationofGiving.aspx 2. You may buy a gift or 3. You may get a gift card

Options 2 and 3 will give you the opportunity to bring your gift to QAS on Sunday, December 13, as part of Santa’s drive-thru. There will be an opportunity for a picture with Santa. Details of the collec-tion will be forthcoming.

Christmas Mass Schedule: Following the protocols in place for COVID19, we have limited seating availa-bility for the Masses. Reservations are the only way that assures you of a seat during Masses in the basilica. Our Christmas Mass schedule will be the following:

Christmas Eve Christmas Day 2 pm Family Mass 7 am 4 pm Family Mass* 9 am* 6 pm 11 am Midnight* 12:30 pm Please note the following for Christmas Masses: 1. Doors open 30 minutes before services and will be closed 10 minutes after the scheduled service begins. 2. You will need a reservation to be in the basilica. 3. Reservations for Christmas Masses will open on December 15. The password to make reservations will be mailed to you soon. Make reservations only for those in your family. 4. If your plans change after you made a reservation, please cancel your reservation, so as to allow others who are waiting to be added to the list. In addition to the Masses, we will have ‘drive-by’ Holy Communion on Christmas Day from 8 am to 8:30 am for those who are vulnerable and those who are uncomfortable being with large crowds in a closed space. De-tails will be forth coming.

Other happenings during this season: Tuesday, December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Our Mass schedule for this holy day is 6:30 am, 8:30 am, 12 noon* and 7:30 pm. Reservations are required. Sunday, December 13 @ 6:45 pm* - Every second Sunday in December on Worldwide Candle Lighting Day, family and friends gather to remember the children who left this earth too soon. All those who have lost a child are welcome. We prefer you make a reservation. However, walk-ins are welcome. Tuesday, December 15 after morning Masses – “Holiday Coffee” It is a basilica tradition that those who attend the weekday morning Masses are invited to the rectory for coffee and holiday cheer. In light of our current situation, we will continue this tradition albeit a little differently – you can grab a cup of coffee, wave a hello to your fellow parishioners and proceed to your next engagement. Saturday, December 19, @ 7:00 pm* – Parish celebration of Simbang Gabi. Simbang Gabi is a Filipino tradition of celebrating a novena of Advent Masses to heighten our preparation for the birth of our Savior, Je-sus Christ, and in honor of our Blessed Mother. This year we will not have a reception following the Mass. A reservation to attend Mass is required. Confessions: Don’t forget to prepare yourself for Christmas and avail yourself the opportunity for the sacra-ment of reconciliation. Confessions are heard on Saturdays after the 8 am Mass and on Monday December 21 from 4 to 5 pm. Christmas Music: ‘Handel’s Messiah’, another of the Christmas traditions at QAS will be different this year. In line with our COVID guidelines, our cantors will bring together some reflective seasonal music for you to enjoy throughout the Advent and Christmas seasons. This will be made available on the parish website. Watch the bulletin and email for the release date. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day: January 1 is the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Our Mass schedule for this holy day is as follows: December 31 - 5 pm* January 1 - 7 am, 9 am* and 11 am

Thanksgiving Holiday The rectory office is closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday on Thursday and Friday, November 26th and 27th and will reopen on Monday, November 30th from 9am to 1pm.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Mass - Thursday, November 26, 10am Our Thanksgiving celebration will take place on Thanksgiving Day. In addition to offering thanks and praise to God for all with which we are blessed, at that Mass we will pray in a special way for the members of our community currently serving in the armed forces and first responders and their families. In the midst of the holiday season, it is important to give gratitude for their great sacrifice, service, dedication to freedom through-out the world and their safe and swift homecoming. Anyone in the military, veterans, first responders or their families who would like to participate in the Mass are asked to contact Paul Scavone at the rectory, 773-736-6060, ext. 225. If you are unable to attend the 10am Mass, there is also an 8am Mass on Thanksgiving morn-ing.

If something needs to be picked up or dropped off, please call to make arrangements. Thank you for your understanding. We must do our part to help provide a safe environment for our parish community.

Bereavement Support Group Has someone close to you recently died? Are you riding a rollercoaster of feelings as you grieve? It is said that “time heals,” and that is true. However, it’s what you do with your time that helps the healing process. It is also helpful to have fellow companions to bring you comfort and support during this difficult journey. We invite you to come to our Bereavement Group meeting. Please note: A mask is required and we will social distance. If you are unable to attend in person, accommodations can be made via zoom to meet. When: Sundays, November 22 (today), 29 and December 6 and 13. Time: 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Where: Holy Name Room (6277 N. Keene Ave.) For more information or to register, please contact Sheila Morrow at 773-383-4405 or [email protected]

What is Happening in RCIA Each week the inquirers and RCIA team start our session by breaking open with the Gospel passage from Sunday’s Mass. Some of the passages have been simple for us to explore, such as the greatest commandment, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind…You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Other passages have been harder to decipher, such as the parable of the wedding banquet. Both passages, whether difficult or straightforward, are meant to challenge us. Following the Gospel messages is never supposed to be easy. And like the Gospel, the RCIA process does a lot of challenging. Our Catholic faith is beautiful and complex, and it is meant to challenge us daily. As Catholics we are made to listen to the Sunday Gospel, be filled spiritually by the Eucharist and go out into the world being the hands and feet of Christ. There is noth-ing easy about being Christ in the world. Right now, our inquirers are still in the “period of inquiry.” Each of them has answered a call from God to be part of RCIA. This period is so important because all of our inquirers are exploring that call from God to be part of the Catholic Church. The call can be challenging in itself. Which is why our inquirers need you. They need our parish community to support and pray for them. This Sunday is the Rite of Acceptance. Let us congratulate our inquirers, who now are Catechumens, as they continue their faith journey to receive the sacraments. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the Catholic Church or is interested in RCIA please reach out to me, Erika Tate, at [email protected].

Reservations for Mass Our Mass attendance has been increasing each week, especial-ly the 9am Mass. We encour-age everyone to make a reser-vation so that you are guaran-teed a seat. Those without res-ervations may have to wait to be seated or may be turned away if we are at capacity. Please note, reserved pews will be held only until ten minutes after Mass begins. After that time those who are waiting will be seated.

Confessions We celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation on Sat-urday mornings following the 8am Mass. If you are not attending the Mass, the priest usually begins at 8:30am and will continue until all are heard. Enter through the southwest Keene Avenue doors. Don’t forget your mask!

Stewardship The community of Queen of All Saints is committed to Christ,

sharing God’s gifts and building the Church together, through word, worship and service.

A Time of Thanksgiving Take a look up at our basilica ceiling. Remember that just three short years ago where we sit was a forest of scaffolding, holding a floor high above the pews where workers diligently removed the old damaged ceiling and replaced it with the modern, sturdy and durable ceiling we see today.

Take a look outside at our bell tower, where until earlier this year scaffolding still held workers repairing and replacing tons of brick and stones which had been damaged in our Chicago winters. This is the time to give thanks to those who came before us, who prudently set aside savings for us to borrow from if we had a sudden need to make necessary repairs. This is the time to show thanks to those whose generosity has enabled us to keep our shared worship space in good repair.

This is the time to show thanks to all those volunteers who give their time and effort to make sure our Masses are held in a clean and hygienic atmosphere, for the safety of everyone. Let’s keep this in mind as we determine how we can give of our time, talent and treasure to our parish. We owe it to ourselves.

Today’s Readings “…whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers, you did for me.” - Matthew 25:40 Most of us are generous when it’s convenient for us. We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one’s time, money, compassion, forgiveness or mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.
