Forging Ahead

Our Legacy

Our Mission

Our Legacy Since its founding in 1893, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has stayed true to its mission of educating students and growing future leaders in accordance with the highest standards of excellence. We are a school of medicine, an extraordinary place where state-of-the-art research, learning, discovery, and training ensure that our faculty and students are among the world’s best.

The School of Medicine has always been, and continues to be, firmly dedicated to our educational mission. We recently launched our new “Genes to Society” curriculum aimed at reframing the context of health and illness more broadly, to encourage students to explore the biologic properties of a patient’s health within a larger, integrated system including social, cultural, psychological and environmental variables. In the near future, the graduate programs (Ph.D. and masters) are exploring new space with the planned renovation of of the Welch Medical Library and the creation of new paradigms for graduate biomedical science education. Our new state-of-the-art Anne and Mike Armstrong Medical Education Building is the perfect complement to this groundbreaking curriculum, fostering a fertile exchange of ideas in boldly creative new ways. The IEE will take its place in the forefront of these new and exciting changes to medical education by lending opportunity and support to both the school and faculty.

Forging Ahead Looking to the future, the Institute for Excellence in Education is poised to take the next steps in advancing our educational mission. Moving forward requires that we first address issues that might jeopardize our success.

Medical education is at a crossroads. Financial challenges, restrictions on faculty teaching time, and externally imposed regulations pose a formidable threat to our faculty’s ability to train the next generation of great medical leaders. Today’s patient-centered care requires a different educational approach, with smaller classes and more teachers. There have been monumental advances in the basic sciences. As the electronic information age fosters new research, new techniques, and vast new ways of understanding the genetics of medicine, our faculty members are both teachers and learners in an ever-evolving health care system.

Much of the strength of the School of Medicine comes from our remarkable faculty. The importance of their role cannot be overstated, and the IEE aims to support, reward, and give value to the educational activities done by all faculty members. We are developing methods to measure and critically evaluate teaching and educational programs. Working closely with faculty, we will set new standards of excellence, encourage educational research and scholarship, expand career development opportunities, and inspire and support innovative teaching techniques that meet the needs of a new generation of medical students.

“I am honored and privileged to be the inaugural director of the Institute for Excellence in Education—and I am

very proud to be at an institution that so values its educational mission. I am

confident that by working together with our faculty, alumni, patients, and

friends, Johns Hopkins will remain the best medical and health science

educational program in the world.”
