Message from the Pastor

Greetings as we begin the Second Week of Advent! In order to make sure that you heard it directly from me and not via the “grapevine,” I need to inform you that I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer during this past year. After consultation with several doctors, it was determined that the most recommended treatment for me is to have the prostate removed. On December 11th, I will be undergoing surgery. I am told that I will be in the hospital overnight and then a week of recovery at home. After that I will be able to resume celebrating Mass and I definitely look forward to celebrating my First Christmas with you! My main purpose in sharing this information with you is to encourage every man to make sure that he goes for a regular check-up and has his PSA tested. I had no previous symptoms and it was detected through my regular check-up and routine testing. Thank-fully it was caught early on and I have been assured that there is an almost 100% success rate in being cancer free after the surgery. I kindly ask for your prayers at this time and I trust and believe that Father Baker and Our Lady of Victory will intercede for me. Thank you! Please note that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrated on December 8 has been transferred to Monday, December 9, this year, as the observance of the Second Sunday of Advent takes precedence. This year the Immaculate Conception will not be a holy day of obligation. Masses on Monday, December 9, will be at the regular Mass times at 7:30 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. In the Gospel for this Second Sunday of Advent, we hear the voice of John the Baptist cry: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!” It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: A voice of one crying out in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” There is no better way for us to prepare for Christ’s coming than by celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation, by taking the opportunity to make a good confession. Confession is a Sacrament of Healing, not a Sacrament of judgment. It is a wonderful opportunity to rid ourselves of the baggage of sin that we may have been carrying around for years. No one is beyond the unconditional love and mercy of God. Thus I encourage every-one to take time this Advent to come to confession and receive the healing grace and inner peace that only God can give to us. There are many opportunities here at Our Lady of Victory to receive this wonderful sacrament. Please check the bulletin for the times for confessions. I also encourage you to invite others, especially those members of your family and friends who for whatever reason have drifted away from the practice of the faith, to return home to God and the Church this Advent and Christmas season. It is here that together we are nurtured and nourished by the Eucharist and the Sacraments. It is here that we discover the joy brought by the Lord Jesus in wanting to have a deep and abiding relationship with each and every one of us. All are welcome with open arms and loving hearts here at Our Lady of Victory Basilica. Oftentimes it just takes a kind, personal invitation from us… “To please come and see!” My prayer for our parish community is that this Advent season may truly be a time for all of us to prepare our hearts with renewed fervor and zeal for the coming of the Lord. Come, Lord Jesus! Prepare the Way of the Lord! Peace and blessings to all, Fr. David

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings Second Sunday of Advent

As the Sundays of Advent unfold the scriptures shift focus from the final coming of the Lord to his historical birth. Today’s scriptures blend the two. Isaiah’s disillusionment with the kings of his own day led him to envision an ideal king who would rule with divine approval and be led by divine wisdom. For centuries the Jewish people anticipated the arrival of that Messiah, who would usher in a blessed age when the whole world would finally dwell in justice and peace.

After centuries of such growing expectation, the preaching of John the Baptist about the imminent arrival of the Messiah could not help but provoke intense interest. The Baptist’s message about preparation for “the one who is coming” (Matthew 3:11) makes clear that Jesus is, in fact, the long-awaited one who is ushering in the new age foretold by Isaiah and all the prophets. School News

The Church tells us Advent is our time of waiting in “devout and joyful expectation” for the celebration of Christ’s Incarnation and also for his Second Coming. We wait, just as our spiritual ancestors did, to celebrate the nativity of the Messiah. We prepare as we wait by baking cookies and thinking about gifts for those we love as well as giving a little more to the poor and taking stock of our souls. The increased generosity and good cheer in people during this time, even in people who are not believers, may be a sign of God’s joy breaking into our sometimes sad world. I always remember the words of my grandmother, “Christmas is a joyous time of year, remember to choose one thing to leave out all year long as a reminder of the Joy of Christmas.” I continue to pick something different each year in her memory.

Retirement Fund for Religious

Support aging religious. Our second collection this weekend is for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Many senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests served for little or no pay. Today, religious communities often do not have enough savings to meet retirement needs. Your gift helps provide medications, nursing care and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. It also helps ensure younger members can continue to good works of their elders. Please be generous.

Care for Creation Suggestion to Help Care for our Common Home

Turn off lights when not in the room. Use lighting controls like dimmers and motion detectors to help decrease the cost of light in rooms. Manual and programmable timers can be used to help decrease energy light costs both inside and outside your home.

From the St. Vincent de Paul Society

The OLV St. Vincent de Paul Society thanks the parish community because through your generous contributions of food, money and time we delivered Thanksgiving baskets to over 150 families in our neighborhood! We are also extremely grateful for all of your prayers, along with the food and monetary donations at the Thanksgiving Day Masses, which help with our ministry of serving the needy all year long.

We will also have a Christmas food distribution, so we can use help packing bags of food on the morning of Friday, December

20. We will also need drivers on Saturday, December 21, to deliver those bags and some toys to Lackawanna homes. It’s a hectic time for everyone, but please consider taking two hours of your morning/afternoon for a great start to the Christmas week!

For more information, call the Rectory at 828-9444 to leave a message for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and a member will call you back. Thank you.
