Please join us in prayer this week for :

Feast of the Most Holy Trinity Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church May 27, 2018

From the Pastor: Some!mes, on Trinity Sunday, we think simply of the mystery of the

reality of three Divine Persons in one God. But this weekend is an invita!on

to go deeper into this magnificent reality. The Trinity is an exchange of love

and we are, by our Bap!sm, by Christmas and Easter and Pentecost, can

allow ourselves to be drawn deeper into that joy.

Here’s what St. Athanasius wrote about the Trinity:

We acknowledge the Trinity, holy and perfect, to consist of the Father, the

Son and the Holy Spirit… It is a wholly crea!ve and energizing reality, self-

consistent and undivided in its ac!ve power, for the Father makes all things

through the Word and in the Holy Spirit, and in this way the unity of the

holy Trinity is preserved. Accordingly, in the Church, one God is preached,

one God who is above all things and through all things and in all things. God

is above all things as Father, for he is principle and source; he is through all

things through the Word; and he is in all things in the Holy Spirit….

Even the gi!s that the Spirit dispenses to individuals are given by the Fa-

ther through the Word. For all that belongs to the Father belongs also to

the Son, and so the graces given by the Son in the Spirit are true gi!s of

the Father. Similarly, when the Spirit dwells in us, the Word who bestows

the Spirit is in us too, and the Father is present in the Word. This is the

meaning of the text: My Father and I will come to him and make our home

with him. For where the light is, there also is the radiance; and where the

radiance is, there too are its power and its resplendent grace.

What a tremendous blessing! To live our lives with the Trinity, sharing in

this same love. Some of the readings these past weeks show the Son pray-

ing to the Father. With the breath of the Spirit in our prayer, we can do the

same. Ask for this in prayer this week: to live the mystery of the Trinity in

daily life. God will show you! You will see!

With love and prayers, Fr. Francis

Meditation from St. Philip Neri

“If you want to come where I am going, that is, to glory, you must come this road, that is, through thorns.” It seems counterin-tui"ve to realize that the walk of holiness is fraught with tempta"ons, difficulty and the suffering of the cross. St. Philip would tell his disciples that “on communion days the devil generally makes greater and sharper assaults than on other days; and if young men do not resist these, they come at last to outrage the Sacrament.” Our yes to Christ and em-barking on the road to glory is the arduous trek up the path of thorns. Let us be ever vigilant and put on the “armor of God” to withstand the trials.”

Feast of the Most Holy Trinity Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church May 27, 2018

Dear Lord,

On this day, we remember those

who have served us by protecting our free-

doms.

When we celebrate our long weekend

with our friends and family, help us remem-

ber, that our freedom to speak of you,

and our freedom to worship you,

and our freedom to do that which we ought

to do, have all been bought at the price

and sacrifice of many lives.

Your Son died for our eternal life in heav-

en. So too, your children died protecting us

here on earth.

Help us be mindful this weekend and al-

ways of the sacrifices made by those in uni-

form for all our freedoms.

Amen.

Guidelines for Reserving Masses

We are happy to share that the guidelines for reserving Masses, now in place, have made it possible for many more members of our parish family to remember their loved ones on days and dates that are mean-ingful for them. Your understanding and support is sincerely appreciat-ed. In the Chris!an spirit of loving and helping each other, please note the following:

1. With the agreement of both persons who are reques!ng a Mass, the Mass can be offered for TWO inten!ons. When you come to the rectory to request a Mass you will be asked if you would agree to sharing that Mass with someone else for whom that day is significant. If you do, a note will be made in the Mass book. The Mass is a most powerful pray-er and God will bless your kindness, understanding and generosity of spirit.

2. To make it possible for as many members of our parish family as possible to remember their loved ones on days and dates that are meaningful for them, during the first week the Mass book is open: a) An individual or household may reserve up to three weekend Masses.

b) For weekday Masses, including Saturday at 9 AM, an individual or household may reserve up to four Masses for the same individual on the same day of the week at the same me. ( Ex. Up to 4 Masses on Thursdays at 8 am for Joe Smith)

3. You may call the rectory (359-1230) during business hours to re-serve a Mass and then follow up with your dona!on. Please remember, however, that when the Mass book first opens there may be significant wait !me as the secretary a&ends to those in the office. Thank you for your understanding!

5 Things Catholics Should Know About First Fridays

What’s so special about First Fridays?

Our parents grew up going to church every First Friday of the month and taking part in Sacred Heart devo!ons, but in recent decades the pious prac!ce has fallen out of prac!ce, and is dismissed by some as an “old-fashioned”

anachronism. A main reason for the decline in interest in this devo!on is probably rooted in a lack of knowledge: many people don’t know what First Fridays are all about.

1. How did the First Friday Devo!on begin?

While some saints referenced the Heart of Jesus in their wri!ngs even centuries earlier, in 1673, a French Visitandine (Visita!on) nun named Margaret Mary Alacoque had visions of Jesus, wherein he asked the Church to honor His Most Sacred Heart. In par!cular, Jesus asked the faithful to “receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecu!ve months.” The request was connected to a specific promise made to all who venerated and promoted devo!on to the Sacred Heart. A#er Margaret Mary’s death, the First Friday prac!ce steadily spread in the Church — endorsed by popes and promoted by saints — but it greatly increased in popularity when Margaret Mary was canonized a saint in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV.

2. Why nine consecu!ve months?

The number nine is tradi!onally associated with a novena and finds its origin in the nine days that the apostles spent in prayer before Pen-tecost. A novena provides an extended amount of !me for prepara!on and interior renewal.3. What am I supposed to do on First Fridays?

3. What am I supposed to do on First Fridays? Go to Mass and receive Holy Communion with the inten!on of honoring Christ ’s Sacred Heart. If you are not in a state of grace, and thus unable to receive, you will also need to go to confession.

4. What are the “promises” connected to this devo!on?

Jesus said to St. Margaret Mary, “In the excess of the mercy of my heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecu!ve months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeas-ure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.” This means that if a person faithfully receives communion for nine consecu!ve months on First Fridays, Jesus will grant that person extra graces at the !me of their death, mak-ing it possible to repent of their sins and receive the last rites (if needed).

This promise is the last of 12 promises connected to the Devo!on to the Sacred Heart, par!cularly a$ached to the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in one’s home:

1. I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.

2. I will establish peace in their homes.

3. I will comfort them in all their afflic"ons.

4. I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death

5. I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.

6. Sinners will find in my heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.

7. Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.

8. Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfec"on.

9. I will bless every place in which an image of my heart is exposed and honored.

10. I will give to priests the gi$ of touching the most hardened hearts.

11.Those who shall promote this devo"on shall have their names wri%en in my Heart.

12. I promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecu"ve months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in my disgrace, nor without receiv-ing their sacraments. My divine heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.

5. Are the First Fridays a “!cket” to heaven?

It is not as simple as going to Mass for nine months and then clocking out, never going to Mass again and leading a sinful life! The en!re purpose of this devo!on is to draw a person closer to the heart of Christ. If a person fulfills these obliga!ons with sincere faith, it is natural for he or she to be closer to God and be$er prepared for death. The moment that this devo!on is observed in a supers!!ous manner, ne-glec!ng the need to live a virtuous life, all bets are off and Jesus’ promise is null and void.

Jesus wants us to rest on his heart, like St. John, and the First Friday devo!on is an opportunity for us to encounter him more than just on Sundays and to deepen our love of him.

Coming to know, love and trust that we may take rest in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and place our anxie!es within, is what the First Fridays are all about.

“Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth

has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all na!ons, bap-

!zing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I

am with you always, to the very end of the age." Ma!hew 28:18-20

Have you ever read a story or seen a movie about someone pu"ng a message inside of a bo!le and pu"ng it in the ocean? Perhaps it was someone who has been stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean and put a message in a bo!le hoping that someone would find it and come to rescue him. Maybe it was someone who just wanted to see where the wind and the waves might take the message.

There is a story about a man named Harold Meyers who went on a cruise in the Caribbean. While on the ship, he took three bo!les and placed a message with his name and address and a dollar inside each bo!le. The dollar was to pay the postage so that the person who found the message would write to him and tell him where they found it. Next, he put a cork in the bo!les, sealed them with wax, and threw them over the side of the ship into the ocean. His friends all teased him saying that he was just throwing good money into the ocean.

Well, what happened to those bo!les is quite amazing. Of those three bo!les he threw into the ocean, two were found and he received a reply from the person who found it. Two out of three! That's amazing!

"To tell you the truth," Mr. Meyers said, "I was shocked. I guess I really never expected to hear from anybody at all."

Do you think that might be a good way to spread the message of Jesus all around the world? You could write John 3:16 on pieces of pa-per. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only bego!en Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have ever-las&ng life." put it in a bo!le, and drop it in the ocean. Then the good news of Jesus would float all around the world.

Does that sound like a good plan to you? Well, to tell the truth, IIdon't think that would get the message of God's love to very many peo-ple. What would be a be!er way to get the good news of God's love to people all around the world? Jesus told his disciples how he want-ed it done, and the plan is s&ll just as good today as it was then.

Jesus said, "Go and make disciples of all na&ons, bap&zing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Jesus wants us to tell everyone we meet about his love for them and share with them what he has taught us in the Bible. He didn't say, "Send a message in a bo!le," he said, "Go and make disciples."

Dear Father, help us to obey the command that you gave us to go and make disciples. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
