By this phrase St. Paul did not mean that every Christian is a priest. Instead he meant that every Christian shares, to some extent, in the priestly calling. Priests forgive formally and sacramentally. All the baptized are called to live a life of forgiveness and reconciliation in the world. Priests preach the word formally and sacramentally. All the baptized are called to preach the joyful gospel of Christ in their words and works. Priests are called to formally take authority over evil in the world. All the baptized are called to share in the spiritual battle and engage with Satan in the great war for souls. Priests administer the sacrament of healing. All the baptized are called to be a healing, reconciling and forgiving presence in the world. The people of God are “a priestly people” and the whole church operates in the world corporately in a priestly fashion. Each of us in our own calling, and all of us as the Body of Christ are like yeast in the dough or salt in the casserole. We are there to spice things up, bring life to this tired old world and point the way to heaven. January 29, 2017 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The apostolic ministry of Christ’s church is delivered to the world through the faithful ministry of the Bishops and Priests, but they are assisted by the Holy Deacons and the whole people of God. Deacons were appointed by the Apostles to assist them in their ministry. They were appointed to help teach the faith and to minister to the needy. For many centuries the ministry of the diaconate had died out, but at the Second Vatican Council it was rejuvenated and we are now served by many excellent men who have been called to this service. They serve well, but we could use some more! If you have ever felt called to the ministry of deacon please come and let’s talk! Christ’s ministry in the world, is not limited to men who are ordained however. The faithful serve Christ and his church as religious sisters, brothers, and consecrated laypeople. In addition to the religious, all of the baptized are called to share in this ministry. The New Testament speaks of the “priesthood of all believers”. Priests forgive formally and sacramentally. All the baptized are called to live a life of forgiveness and reconciliation in the world. Priests preach the word formally and sacramentally. Spiritual Adoption

Our “spiritually adopted” babies will be born soon. To get ready for this much anticipated event, we are having a Baby Shower. Beginning the weekend of January 21/22, a playpen will be placed in the Narthex where you can place your baby gifts. These items will be given to Birthright of Greenville who, in turn, will give them out to our “new” moms: Sleepers, 0-3 mo. & 3-6 mo. (boy and/or girl) Diapers Baby Shampoo Baby Wash Baby Wipes The playpen will be up through the February 4/5 weekend. Make sure “our” babies have what they need as they start out their new lives. Call Victoria Norris 967-2713 or email [email protected] if you have questions.

O God, who adorn creation with splendor and beauty and fashion human lives in your image and likeness, awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands, and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of human life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Thank you to all OLR parishioners and youth who attended the March for Life in Washington, DC, last week.

We appreciate your willingness to speak out for life in this way.
