FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
CONVERSION STORY I have shared, before, the following reflection from Caro-lyn Vokoun, the music director at my previous parish. In celebrating the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) this weekend, I felt compelled to share it again: “I grew up in a Protestant home in the Bible Belt. My parents, Everett and Carol, though not Catholic, were very devout in the practice of their faith. Among the gifts they passed on to me were a great love of the Bible and a devotion to keeping Sunday as the Lord’s Day. When I went to college I met Ed, a young Catholic man, who eventually became my husband. Almost all Protestants who live in the Bible Belt, even members of the main-stream church in which I was raised, harbor an intense prejudice against the Catholic Church. Dating a Catholic man presented a great dilemma for me: How could I ever convert to the Catholic Church, but if I didn’t, how could I ever raise my children Catholic? Ed’s mother, Thistle (her real name!), was a remarkably devout woman who prayed the full Rosary (all 15 decades) every day. I have no doubt that she began to pray for my conversion from the first day she met me. Two years later something miraculous happened! (highlight mine) One day while praying in the Newman Chapel at Washington University (only God knows what mysterious force drew me there), I actually discerned the Real Presence of Jesus and knew right away that I wanted to become Catholic! Since that day I have never once had a desire to return to my Protestant roots and have had an insatiable desire to learn all I can about the Catholic faith. Impelled by the love of Sacred Scripture passed on by my parents and the love of the Catholic Church passed on by my in-laws (I failed to mention my faithful father-in-law, Eddie), I have devoted much of my adult life to the study of theology in both formal and informal settings. My dream of seeing my parents convert to the Catholic faith never became a reality during their lifetimes. But I have a strong sense that they are both now basking in the ultimate Real Presence alongside Thistle and Eddie. It seems to me that Christ primarily asks two things of us: that we consistently put ourselves in a position to receive the light of truth and that once we have received it, we faithfully walk accordingly.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++
What a beautiful reflection! My wish for all of us is to “consistently put ourselves in a position to receive the light of truth and … faithfully walk accordingly.”
God bless all of you and God bless. . .

PRAY FOR MORE PRIESTLY, RELIGIOUS AND CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE VOCATIONS
D-DAY As you know last Monday was Memorial Day. I want to thank everyone who joined us for mass as we remembered in prayer all those who died for our coun-try, and all those injured in war – physically and emo-tionally. And let us continue to pray for the safety of all those who are presently serving our country. This weekend is the anniversary of D-Day, June 6. Thousands of men lost their lives on that day. So many families grieved the loss of their sons. So many families have since grieved the loss of their sons and daughters in the too many wars that have taken place since D-Day. You might consider, each day, adding to your prayer intentions, prayers for peace – peace in your own life, peace in our families and relationships, peace in our neighborhoods, peace in our country, peace between nations, peace in our world. Finally, let us be mindful of all those who are pres-ently in service to our country. And let us always keep our nation in our prayers so that we as a nation might live up to the ideals for which others have shed their blood. God bless America!
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE In the Mass, we take our place at the Lord’s Table, hear His words, affirm our commitment to Him, and receive the real Risen Christ into our life under the forms of bread and wine. We do not have to travel to Jerusalem to encounter the Risen Christ. We do not have to await His glorious return to meet Him. We have only to come to Mass.

THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS
The devotion to the Sacred Heart (also known as the Most Sacred Heart of
Jesus, Sacratissimum Cor Iesu in Latin) is one of the most widely practiced
and well-known Catholic devotions, wherein the heart of Jesus is viewed as
a symbol of "God's boundless and passionate love for mankind."
The heart has always been seen as the "center" or essence of a person ("the
heart of the matter," "you are my heart," "take it to heart," etc.) and the
wellspring of our emotional lives and love ("you break my heart," "my heart
sings," etc.) Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is devotion to Jesus Christ
Himself but in the particular ways of meditating on his interior life and on
His threefold love -- His divine love, His burning love that fed His human
will, and His sensible love that affects His interior life.
The Sacred Heart is often depicted in Christian art as a flaming heart shining
with divine light, pierced by the lance-wound, encircled by the crown of
thorns, surmounted by a cross, and bleeding. Sometimes, the image is
shown shining within the bosom of Christ with his wounded hands pointing
at the heart. The wounds and crown of thorns allude to the manner of
Jesus' death, while the fire represents the transformative power of divine
love. June 11, 2021
