Dear Friends,
In every Eucharistic Prayer used at mass,
there is always a prayer for unity and peace whether
it is for the Church herself or for the world at
large. In the past few years I have started to
become more mindful of that part of the prayer and
try to say it with more emphasis on the words,
“grant her peace and unity according to your
will.” These days of Advent have become more
important to my own spirituality of “waiting in
joyful hope for the coming of our savior Jesus
Christ!” I fear that people have turned less and less
to the Church for this peace and unity at a time
when it is absolutely crucial to recognize that what
everyone is looking for is Jesus himself. I am
concerned that cynicism to, or in, the Church has
become so destructive to the Body of Christ that we
don’t always recognize our selves for what we are
called to be in the name of Jesus Christ.
As we approach the great and sacred Feast
of Christmas, there will be, no doubt, either
conversations or monologues or even arguments
about faith, religion and the role the Church plays
in all of this. My best advice is to listen with an
open mind and an open heart to those around
you. The best evidence of faith is to demonstrate
confidence and trust in what you believe and let
folks see it in love. Put aside the differences and
focus what keeps us together and challenge others
to do the same.
One of my favorite Christmas songs is by
Judy Collins called, “Come, Rejoice.” You can
listen to it on YouTube or elsewhere, but it is a
song that recalls how Wisemen traveled to the
manger and call us to live together in the real
meaning of the feast. What follows in the second
verse and the refrain, “Bearing their gifts every
wise man knelt, Bending his knees to the King, In
the heavenly light while sweet Mary smiled, They
heard the angels sing, So every soul on Christmas
day learns to find the Grace, With gifts of Myrrh,
and Frankincense. They bless sweet Jesus’
face. Refrain, Come rejoice, Queen and beggar,
The homeless man, And the Prince of pride,
Saints and vagabonds, Rich and poor, Rejoice in
gladness on Christmas night!”
The focus is Jesus. Let’s start there and
build together the Church he so richly deserves.
Peace,
Fr. Michael

Christmas 2019
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Christmas brings joy to the world and joy
to our hearts as we contemplate and celebrate
Christ’s birth at Bethlehem.
We can readily appreciate Mary’s joy as
she gazed on the beauty, mystery and wonder
of her newborn Son. It is a joy all mothers
experience and one fathers and families share
as they welcome and appreciate the gift of new
life.
Mary’s joy was deepened by the
wondrous knowledge that the Child she bore
was also God’s Eternal Son who, through her,
took on a human nature to be with us and to
save us. That presence brought joy to a cold
and drafty cave where Mary and Joseph took
shelter with animals. Christ’s presence brings
joy to us no matter what our circumstances.
We marvel not only that God’s Son took
on our human nature, but that we, through the
baptism Jesus instituted, also gain a share in
God’s divine life. Jesus is God’s Son by nature.
Through baptism we become God’s children by
adoption. And just as God was truly in Mary’s
arms in the Infant Jesus, so too, though in a
different way, God is with us in our souls
through baptism. Our God is not distant,
indifferent or detached from our lives. He is
with us. He is Emmanuel.
The Christmas Season begins with the
birth of Christ and ends with the Feast of His
baptism. The Season with all its beautiful
liturgies, traditions and customs will quickly
pass. However, for those who have become
God’s adopted sons and daughters through
baptism and who remain in His grace, God
does not pass from us. We have His presence,
strength and peace with us always. Like Mary
and Joseph we will face uncertainties,
disappointments and unexpected trials, but we
do not face them alone. We are aided by a
strength greater than our own.
May the enduring presence of Christ to
you and all the baptized extend the joy of
Christmas and the blessings of God throughout
the New Year and all of life.
With every prayerful best wish, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester
“JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON”
We are so grateful for all of our children who took
part in the Christmas Pageant. They remind us that
Jesus is the Reason for the Season! May you
continue to spread that Good News through the Love
of Jesus that shines in your hearts!
