Grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord (2 Pt 1:1)

[1] Giza built pyramids fit for a king. Athens gloried in the Acropolis envied by the wise. Rome boasted of her Colosseum and her military might. Jerusalem took pride in her Temple, the place of the worship of the true God. Yet, not one of this receives as much praise in songs and hymns as the li le town of Bethlehem.

[2] David was born in Bethlehem. Samuel anointed him king in place of Saul here. And, from the well of Bethlehem, three of David’s bravest soldiers at the risk of their own lives, brought him water to refresh him in the midst of ba le.

[3] Micah, eight centuries before the coming of Christ, predicted that an honor greater than David’s fame would crown this ny hamlet. Moved by the Holy Spirit, Micah prophesied, “But you, Bethlehem-Ephrathah, least among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth…one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient mes” (Micah 5:2). The birth of Jesus bathes Bethlehem with the splendor of heaven’s glory.

[4] Forty-five mes, the Old Testament names Jerusalem, the capital of King David’s reign, as “the city of David.” But, once Christ is born, Luke gives that tle of honor to Bethlehem. Just six miles southwest of Jerusalem in the Judean hills, Bethlehem rising 100 feet higher than Jerusalem, now has a new and las ng dignity. It is the birthplace of the Son of God.

[5] The fields surrounding Bethlehem produced an abundance of grain, figs, vines, almonds, and olives. It was here that Naomi and her daughter-in-law returned at a me of famine in Moab. Ruth went to glean the grain in the fields of Boaz, whom she married and then became the great-grandmother of David. Because of its rich fer lity, the whole region was called “Ephrathah.” The name means “frui ulness” or “abundance.” How fi ng that such a place would be the birthplace of Jesus who brings the abundance of grace to the world.

[6] Because of its loca on in the grain producing region of Old Testament mes, “Bethlehem” literally means “House of Bread.” How appropriate that Jesus is born here. A er the mul plica on of the loaves and fish, Jesus iden fied himself as “the bread that came down from heaven,” (Jn 6:41). As bread sa sfies our hunger and strengthens us physically, Jesus fills our empty hearts with the love and wisdom of God. We feast on his every word. As Scripture says, “Not by bread alone does man live but, by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the Lord” (Dt 8:3).

[7] In his great discourse in chapter six of John’s gospel, Jesus goes even farther in iden fying himself as the bread of life. He says, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world” (Jn 6:51). With these words, he promised the Eucharist, his very body and blood as our food and drink.

[8] Jesus did not mean his words to be taken merely symbolically or spiritually. He meant us to take them literally. Many objected to this literal meaning of his words and walked away. But, Jesus did not change what he said. He did not accommodate his words to their lack of belief. He meant exactly what he said. How blessed we are that the Church has always held true to the reality of the Eucharist as the very Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus. Famished by the world, we can be nourished and sa sfied by Christ himself.

[9] Bethlehem is not an event lost in the faded light of the distant past. Its glory s ll shines bright upon us. In every Eucharist, Jesus offers himself to us as the Bread of Life. Thus, every Eucharist is Bethlehem for us. As the shepherds said to each other on the night Jesus was born, we say to one another each me we go to Mass, “ Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us” (Lk 2:15). We go to receive the Bread of Life.

[10] Jesus’ own invita on “Take and eat, this is my body” (Mt 26:26) requires a worthy response on own part. As St. Paul tells us, we should examine ourselves before receiving Holy Communion. His words are strong: “Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the Body and Blood of the Lord. …For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself” (1 Cor 11:27 and 29).

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

[11] When St. Paul speaks about “discerning the body,” he is telling us two very important condi ons for the worthy recep on of the Eucharist. First, we must recognize the Eucharist for what it is. We must hold firm that this is no ordinary bread, no blessed bread, no sacred sign. We must believe that the Eucharist is truly the Bread of Life. It is Jesus, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, whole and en re, before whom the angels bow in adora on. Without such Catholic faith, no one should dare receive the Eucharist.

[12] Secondly, we need to recognize the holiness of Christ who comes to be our food and drink. Thus, we should approach Holy Communion in the state of grace. As the Catechism of the Council of Trent beau fully expresses, “Before [Jesus] gave to His Apostles the Sacrament of His precious Body and Blood, although they were already clean, He washed their feet to show that we must use extreme diligence before Holy Communion in order to approach it with the greatest purity and innocence of soul.”

[13] Therefore, anyone whose life objec vely stands in serious, public contradic on to any one of the Ten Commandments needs first to repent with a firm purpose to sin no more before receiving Holy Communion. Likewise, anyone who has commi ed a mortal sin needs to approach the Sacrament of Penance, confess their sin, and be absolved before receiving. As St. Paul solemnly warns us, “Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord” (1 Cor 11:27). The Sacrament of Reconcilia on cleanses us of our sins, whether mortal or venial, thus disposing us for the proper recep on of Holy Communion.

[14] We are all sinners. Thus, we need the humility of the shepherds to whom the angel brought the glad dings of our Savior’s birth. When the angel announced to them that “In the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord” (Lk 2:11), they rejoiced. They knew that they were sinners. They recognized that Jesus had come to save them from their sins. And, so they hastened to the manger. We, too, need to acknowledge our sins, seek forgiveness and hasten to Bethlehem.

[15] Jesus, the Bread of Life, longs to be our food and drink. He comes to the weakest and the strongest among us. The repentant sinner and the struggling saint find in him, “the true bread come down from heaven” (Jn 6:32). Before so great a sacrament, we humbly echo humbly with ardent faith the words of the Centurion . . . “Lord, I am not worthy.” Repen ng of our sins and receiving the Eucharist, we come to Bethlehem and Jesus makes our soul his manger and our home his dwelling place.

The annual collec on for Re red Religious is among the collec ons to which the members of our parish are most generous. That is as it should be. Women and men who have commi ed themselves to consecrated life through profession of the evangelical counsels are a blessing for the Church. They are a living sign for all of us in what it means to live our bap smal voca on to be the presence of Christ for others. For many, many years the religious of the United States, par cularly religious women, built the Catholic School system, built Catholic hospitals, served orphans, the sick, and the des tute. They did all of this out of love for the Lord and his Church. A decrease in their numbers has, in part, led to radical changes in the way that the Church approaches those ministries where religious played so vibrant a role.

Those who entered religious life as very young women and men never could have imagined that they themselves would need to ask for help just to survive. They always lived very modestly, asking li le of the ins tu ons where they served, and in many cases they were given virtually no monetary s pend. But with convents, monasteries, and motherhouses burs ng at the seams with voca ons in the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s, and even into the early 60’s the sheer number of members of their communi es ac vely serving various apostolates made care for the ill and infirm of their communi es certain. Those days are over. Today, the many religious communi es of our country are caring for an aging popula on and with severely diminished voca ons. First of all, we all need to pray for an increase of voca ons to religious life. Religious life is a difficult life but it is a beau ful life and I know that religious now serving would tell you of the deep joy found in serving the Lord in religious communi es dedicated totally to the care of others. Second, we need to care for these religious who have cared for us, teaching us, a ending to us in illness, and being an example of what it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus. We took the collec on for re red religious last week; but the envelope comes at the end of your packet of envelopes. If you would like to include the envelope in the collec on this week or on another Sunday, please do not hesitate to do so.

The Sacrament of Reconcilia on with individual confession and absolu on will be available Monday, December 19, 2016 between 7:00-8:30 in the evening. The Sacrament of Penance, Reconcilia on, is a wonderful way to prepare for the Christmas celebra on with a heart and mind renewed and freed from heavy burdens. In the Sacrament of Reconcilia on we humbly confess

our sinfulness and ask pardon from the Lord Jesus and his Church. People will o en say that they have been away from confession “too long.” Not possible. The Lord is always wai ng for us with the gi of his merciful love that brings us healing and wholeness.

Another fundraising request . . . this season, par cularly, you have been inundated with requests for help. Thank you for all that you have contributed to the many good works of the Church and our parish, specifically. One more request . . . the response to our calendar raffle has been very good so far but we hope to do more than just break even. If we sell one thousand more raffles, we will make a $10,000 profit for our parish. One thousand more raffles sounds overwhelming but we have already sold over five hundred. If everyone who comes through our doors on the weekend buys just one cket at $10.00 a piece, we will do very well. I thank all of those who have par cipated in the calendar raffle and I thank you for your never failing generosity and goodness.

Our church is always decorated so beau fully for Christmas. Christmas Flower Memorial envelopes are available at the doors of the church. Please print the names of departed loved ones on the envelope and return it to the collec on or parish office by December 19, 2016. The names of those memorialized through the Christmas flowers will be placed in a Christmas Book of Remembrance. Thank you for your generosity.

A N A P P ’

Here we go again . . . a word about parking. Please be a en ve to the limited parking spaces that we have. Parishioners and visitors o en express astonishment at the way that parking spaces are wasted and the haphazard way that people park in our lot. Once again, it is important to note that we don’t have spaces to waste. When spaces are wasted because of a failure to pull all the way through the space, then there are people who cannot find a place to park, and those who have difficulty walking find it nearly impossible to make it to the elevator so that they can access the church. It just takes a few extra minutes to be though ul. Please take the me to be mindful of others.

C C V S

A special word of thanks to Ms. Donna Rojas for all of the tremendous work that she put into making the Christmas Cra and Vendor Sale possible; Thank you to all of the vendors who par cipated and all of those who contributed to making the day such a success. Thank you for your support.

M C

Thank you for your generosity in our Maintenance Collec on. Your maintenance support goes a long way to making sure that our buildings and grounds are well cared for. I hope that you will no ce some extensive repairs that have been done to the parking lot. A total repaving of the parking lot will cost over $180,000. We have made about $10,000 in repairs now to make sure the parking lot remains safe and is not a hazard. We are also arranging to replace the corroding and falling fencing along the drive way that leads to Route 23 which has been unsightly. Some day we will get around to repaving the en re lot and replacing all of the fencing. Thank you for your generosity.

Faith Formation Corner Faith Formation Registrations Are Due! If you have not already done so, PLEASE register your children for our Faith Formation programs. It is important that all registrations are in ASAP to ensure our ability to adequately plan for your children's sessions. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200. Confirmation Program OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Please see the following list for possible ministry opportunities that all students can become involved with:
