My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon

The Fourth Sunday of Advent “Hail, Mary full of grace!”

As we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent we are on the doorstep of Christmas. Today we hear the account of the Annuncia on of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Saint Luke’s Gospel. The Virgin Mary receives the message of the Angel Gabriel: “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28). Mary was troubled by the Angel’s message but Gabriel reassures her: “Do not be afraid Mary, for you have found favor with God” (1:30). Mary places her trust in the Angel’s message and accepts the call to be the Mother of God. Mary is the first disciple of the Son whom she was to bear and she is the model of faith for all of us. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that: “At the announcement that she would give birth to ‘the Son of the Most High’ without knowing man, by the power of the Holy Spirit, Mary responded with the obedience of faith, certain that ‘with God nothing will be impossible’: ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be [done] to me according to your word.’ Thus, giving her consent to God's word, Mary becomes the mother of Jesus. Espousing the divine will for salva on wholeheartedly, without a single sin to restrain her, she gave herself en rely to the person and to the work of her Son; she did so in order to serve the mystery of redemp on with him and dependent on him, by God's grace” (n. 494). Before we hear the account of the Birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas it is important that we reflect upon how important Mary’s role in God’s plan of salva on is. Mary believes that God’s presence in her life will make it possible for her to walk the difficult path ahead of her. In our gospel reading for this last Sunday of Advent we also hear that the Virgin Mary was “betrothed to a man named Joseph” (1:27); he will become the protector of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus. In all of the scriptures there is not a single word of Joseph’s recorded and yet Joseph came to carry out a central role in God’s plan of salva on. The Virgin Mary’s trust in God’s will and Joseph’s quiet, confident acceptance of God’s plan made it possible for us to receive the gi of eternal life through the Savior, Jesus Christ, whose divine birth we will soon celebrate. Pope Benedict XVI, spoke of the gospel that we hear proclaimed today in his 2008 Angelus Message for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and highlighted the tremendous significance of Mary’s “yes” to God: “This is the first founda on of the redemp on. The second is the death and Resurrec on of Jesus and these two inseparable aspects express a single divine plan: to save humanity and its history, assuming them fully by taking on the en re burden of all the evil that oppresses it.” As Christmas draws closer and closer we remember that we are not just celebra ng the

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 3)

historical birth of Jesus Christ, although that is, of course, important and a great cause for celebra on but we are also celebra ng our redemp on in Christ and the presence of Christ in our lives each day. Mary and Joseph are with us on the journey to faithfully follow Christ; we should be reassured by their presence – what be er companions could we need or have? The Holy Father Pope Francis, commends us to seek the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary to guide us in his encyclical, Lumen Fidei:

Mother, help our faith! Open our ears to hear God’s word and to recognize his voice and call. Awaken in us a desire to follow in his footsteps, to go forth from our own land and to receive his promise. Help us to be touched by his love, that we may touch him in faith. Help us to entrust ourselves fully to him and to believe in his love, especially at mes of trial, beneath the shadow of the cross, when our faith is called to mature. Sow in our faith the joy of the Risen One. Remind us that those who believe are never alone. Teach us to see all things with the eyes of Jesus, that he may be light for our path. And may this light of faith always increase in us, un l the dawn of that undying day which is Christ himself, your Son, our Lord!

The example of the Virgin Mary encourages us to enter deeply into this joyful me of prepara on for the celebra on of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. As Benedict XVI wrote of the example of both Mary and Joseph: “Let us now turn our gaze again to Mary and Joseph who were awai ng the birth of Jesus and learn from them the secret of reflec on in order to taste the joy of Christmas. Let us prepare ourselves to welcome with faith the Redeemer who comes to be with us, the Word of God's love for humanity of every epoch.” As we prepare to celebrate Christ’s birth we pray for the gi to open our hearts, our lives, to his presence so that this Christmas will bring us renewed strength and resolve to be worthy followers of Christ like the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Holy Angels.

C F M The flowers that decorate our Church during our celebra on of our Savior’s birth are always beau ful. They give praise and honor to Almighty God and they gladden our hearts as well. Each year there is an opportunity to remember deceased loved ones through Christmas Flower Memorials. Please see page 5 of the bulle n or make use of the envelopes that are found at the doors of the church to remember those who have passed

Mass Cards Are Available!! You may now request Mass Cards at the parish office or through our website, www.holyangelsrc.org. Hover over the Donate tab and click on “Mass Intentions”. Complete the form and payment information. It’s that easy!

ATTENTION PARENTS! FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION

Please visit our website https://holyangelsrc.org/ to view a recently created FAITH FORMATION link. Under it you will find information related to our curriculum this year, program guidelines and expectations, parent resources and registration for the upcoming year! Registration should be completed online and submitted electronically, along with payment. If you have more than one child to register, EACH CHILD MUST BE REGISTERED SEPARATELY, so the fee is divided when you submit payment for each child. For example the total fee for 2 children is $235 which will be $117.50 per child, when registering each separately. If you have 3 children to register, the total is $275, which will be $91.50 per child when you register each separately.

It will certainly be a Faith Formation year unlike any we have ever encountered, but I am confident that we will continue to partner together to ensure your children continue to learn the important tenets of our Catholic Faith, and most importantly meaningfully apply the teachings and example of Jesus Christ in their development of a relationship with God.

Online Giving Will Help Sustain Our Church

Meeting your giving goal will help support our church’s many ministries dedicated to strengthening our church’s community and community at large.

Online Giving allows you to make donations, payments and pledges via your smart device or computer to our church. Search the App Stores for Online Giving or go to www.OLGapp.com and register with our parish.

Set up your gift today or consider an additional gift via our website on your smart device. Visit www.holyangelsrc.org and click on the “Donate” tab to make a one-time or recurring donation.

For parishioners who want to avoid credit card and bank transaction fees, we strongly encourage the free bank bill-payment services that many local banks offer. For example, both Bank of America and Chase offer Bill Pay services that allow the account owner to set up a weekly automatic payment via check in a set amount to the parish. This paper check is then mailed by the bank to the parish on the date the account holder sets. This works very well and is easy for most parishioners to set up and use.

Parking on Route 23 Recently Route 23 was repaved and lined creating two lanes on the northbound side which means you may no longer park in front of the church. You will receive a traffic ticket if you do so. You may park on the southbound side (across the street) but please pay close attention to the street signs. Of course you may always park in the church parking lot. There is plenty of parking now that we are limited to the amount of parishioners that can attend.

If you could take a pan and lid home and make one of the (very simple) recipes, it would be a blessing to a family. Please freeze your meal, label, and return to the ministry center.

Pans will be available on the first FULL weekend of each month.

Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.
