Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Christ has no body now on earth but yours,

no hands but yours, Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now.

--St Teresa of Avila What did the hands of Christ do and how do we continue the work of his hands today? Tradition tells us that Jesus learned the trade of carpentry from Joseph. His hands could build things out of wood and repair broken objects. Jesus raised his hands in prayer to the Father. His hands touched the sick and the lame and brought them encouragement and healing. His hands tossed the merchants tables out of the temple area and purified it. His hands broke bread and fed people. They received a cup of water from the Samaritan woman at the well and touched her heart and spirit with hope and mercy. His hands took the hands of Jairus’ daughter and raised her to life. His hands welcomed little children and blessed them. His hands traced doodles in the sand before those who would stone a woman “caught in adultery” while letting the man go free. His hands washed the feet of the Apostles and taught them to be ministers and witnesses of ser-vice. His hands were pierced by nails as he was hung on the Cross and gave his mother to John and to us as our mother. He offered his hands to Thomas so that he might put his fingers in the nail holes and move from doubt to belief. His hands cooked fish and offered them to the Apostles on the seashore. With raised hands he blessed his disciples and sent them to continue his mission as he returned to his heavenly Father. The hands of Christ were active, constructive, healing nurtur-ing, welcoming, prayerful, teaching, comforting, strengthening, suffering, assuring hands that brought his Father’s love and mercy to the world. They were not hands that grasped for things. They are hands that give the loving touch of God to all people in every age. Teresa of Avila teaches us that Christ choose our hands to bring the human touch of God’s grace, mercy, and love to our age. Look at your hands. How can you use them in the way of Christ? Our hands can build the Kingdom of God through works of charity and kindness. Our hands can gather and prepare food for the hungry. They can hold the hands of children, the elderly, and the vulnerable, and bring them the assurance, guidance, and care of Christ. Our hands can join with others to witness to the truth of our faith and bring the Peace of Christ to our world. Our hands can hold the hands of the dying comfort them, pray with them, and accompany them on the last steps of their earthly journey to the Father. Our hands can comfort those who are injured and suffering. Pierced by hardship, they can gather in the lost and abandoned and bring them to Christ. Our hands can offer the Peace of Christ to one another and carry out the Christ’s mission through the Church’s ministry. God gave us our hands to continue the work of Christ in every age. “Christ has no hands but ours” today. Are we willing to lend our hands to Christ to bring the human touch of God’s love and mercy to our world?

May God’s Peace be Yours, Msgr. Jay

This Sunday’s Readings First Reading: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 Responsorial: Psalm 40:2-4, 18 Second Reading: Hebrews 12:1-4 Gospel: Luke 12:49-53

Next Sunday’s Readings First Reading: Isaiah 66:18-21 Responsorial: Psalm 117:1-2 Second Reading: Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 Gospel: Luke 13:22-30

Theme: God's power among us gives us strength. Step One: Listen to the Word When you hear the reading today, what word or phrase caught your ear? What really struck you in today's reading? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: What is one way you can be closer to Jesus today? Question for Youth: We are assured that God will be with us as we go through life, so what strategy do you use to keep God in mind as you deal with the ups and downs of life as a young adult? Question for Adults: Share about a time when life's struggles were so difficult for you that you nearly "threw in the towel." What signs did you see then that God remained with you?

Important Reasons to become a Catechist:

You will grow in your faith, learn the teachings of the Church, and deepen your relationship with Jesus. Your baptism calls you to share in Jesus’ ministry. Children, teens, and adults in today’s world need to hear the Good News of Jesus. Children, teens, and adults in today’s world, now more than ever, need to encounter good role models of faith. You have much to share with those you’ll catechize, and with other catechists! Today’s catechist’s manuals/resources and websites offer outstanding support. You’ll be challenged; you’ll have fun; and you’ll make new friends. You’ll be helping people to deepen their relationships with Jesus (Evangelizing!). You’ll be handing on the 2,000-year-old Tradition that changes lives. It’s our job: Jesus sent us to “go and teach all nations.”

If you are interested in sharing your faith with the children of this parish, consider becoming a Catechist. Please contact Andrea Reddinger at [email protected] or call 410-923-7023

Catechist Formation Opportunities available to all parishioners! Please come along and invite a friend to our 6-part retreat series called,

A Day of Prayer- Exploring and Apprecia ng Igna an Spirituality.

The Igna an Spirituality is focused on apprecia ng and understanding that God is always with us and calls us to grow in our aware-ness of God’s presence and involvement in our lives. Our responsibility as believers is to be aware and conscious of God’s immi-nence and power in shaping and sharing with us God's love, and our responsibility to be conscious and credible witnesses to God's presence in our lives.

In order to help us shape our awareness of God's life in us, and how that might translate into appropriate strategies as catechists, we have invited Ms. Dee Papania, the DRE at St Alphonsus Church, in Woodstock. She is a Doctoral candidate in Igna an Spirituality at Catholic University. She will work with us to enhance our apprecia on of how Igna an spirituality can support our forma on efforts with the children during this year ahead.

The next session is Saturday, August 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30p.m. at St. Bernade es, in Severn. Please RSVP by Monday, August 15th [email protected] . For the descrip ons and dates for the en re series, please see our website or contact the faith forma on office : 410-923-6953.

Breaking Bread with the Hungry Dear Companions,

On Friday we broke bread with 217 guests.

K said he was especially grateful for the food because he had sold his food stamps card for 50 cents on the dollar so he could pay his phone bill. I guess he considered a phone more vital than food.

F really enjoyed the fresh sliced tomatoes from our straw bale gar-den. He ate two plates’ full. Several years ago he arrived from Kenya full of dreams; now he sometimes gets drunk to forget them.

J arrived in Baltimore with friends and then somehow got separat-ed from them and marooned here. When I took him to the bus sta-tion the guy said that the busses to Atlanta were full for the next three days. We didn’t know what to do. Then a woman came over and said there had been a cancelation and so there was one seat to Atlanta. J whooped and gave me a hug.

With all our faults and foibles, we are all the beloved daughters and sons of God.

The AA County’s Respite Care Referral Program is recruiting caring individuals to train as Companion-Caregivers for the county’s seniors and adults with disabilities. Clients and families are often looking for assistance with meal preparation, shopping, transportation to appointments, as well as companionship. Respite Care workers make their own schedule, working as much or as little as desired. Prior to placement on the registry, workers will be required to complete a three (3) day training at the Department of Aging & Disabilities. Applications to join the registry can be downloaded from the Department’s web-site at www.aacounty.org/aging or by calling 410-222-4377. Traveling??? Now you can keep up with all mass services around the country. Just log onto www.masstimes.com type in your city and state you are visiting and up will come the local parishes and mass times. Happy Homily to you ;)
