WEEK 1 WEEK 2 WEEK 3

“Please pray for the sick…”

Sept. 13, 2015-p2

Sacraments and Prayer Eucharistic Adoration: Begins every Friday after Holy

Communion at the 9:00 AM Mass. Concluding prayers and the

Benediction Rite for this holy hour begins about 10:15 AM.

Baptism: Instruction classes are held on the last Saturday of

each month in the rectory at 11 AM. Parents should call the

rectory to make arrangements before they attend the class and

bring with them a copy of the child’s birth certificate. Baptism

is administered on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 1:30 PM.

Confession / Reconciliation: Saturday: 4:00 PM to 4:45

PM or by appointment with one of the priests.

Marriage: A couple must come to the rectory to make ar-

rangements for their wedding at least six months in advance

of their proposed wedding date. Please call the rectory to

make an appointment. Marriage preparation (Pre-Cana) is avail-

able directly through OLBS as well as through the diocese.

Please contact Laura (718 352-9247) or the rectory for informa-

tion on the OLBS program. For information on the diocesan

program, please log on to www.pre-cana.org

Anointing of the Sick: One of the priests should be called

as soon as there is a sign of serious illness.

Communion of the Sick: Anyone who cannot attend Mass

because of illness may receive the Eucharist at home on a regu-

lar basis. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist

the priests in this ministry. Please call Agnes, Communion of

the Sick Coordinator, at 718 631-4793, or the rectory.

Cenacles of Life: Mondays 7:30pm - Rosary and Eucharistic

Adoration; and Saturdays at 8:15am Rosary in the church.

Liturgy of the Hours: Monday to Friday before 9am Mass.

What is the Importance of Eucharistic Adoration? Eucharistic adoration is the respect and worship we

give to Jesus, who is truly present to us under the ap-

pearance of bread and wine. The Eucharist is a price-

less treasure; by not only celebrating it but also by

praying before it outside of Mass we are enabled to

make contact with the very wellspring of grace. As St.

Alphonsus Liguori noted, “of all devotions, that of

adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest

after the sacraments, the one dearest to God and the one

most helpful to us.: (CCC 1418)

From the Pastor’s Desk….

Dear Parishioners, Congratulations to Fr. Larry Ryan on his installation as Pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Church. I know he is grateful for our prayers and encouragement. Please join me in welcoming Kathleen Giuliano to the pastoral staff as a part-time Youth Ministry Coordinator. Her duties will include leadership of our Teen Club for junior-high age and the Catholic Teen Community (CTC) for high school age. She has personal experience in these ministries growing up here in the parish and membership in our Young Adult Ministry (YAM) as well. We will soon be blessed by the visit of our Holy Father, Pope Francis to America and our own city. In fact he will visit our diocese, flying in and out of JFK Airport. While few will be able to see him up close, the media coverage will be extensive, including our own NetTV. Please pray for the success of his pastoral visit as he brings the joy of the gospel to the people of Cuba, the White House, Con-gress, the U.N. and the International Gathering of Fami-lies in Philadelphia. Many thanks to the Knights of Co-lumbus for the gift of Francis’ Joy of the Gospel which you will receive today. Also thanks to Gleason Funeral Homes we are giving out prayer cards of Pope Francis next weekend. Walk with Francis next weekend by par-ticipating in our food drive for the needy in honor of his visit. And bring someone to Mass on Welcome Sunday, September 26-27 while the Pope is in our midst so that you can share your Catholic faith and love of the Lord with others while the moment is ripe with interest and excitement.

FOOD DRIVE - Sept. 19th-20th

In honor of Pope Francis’ visit to NY, we will have a Food Drive NEXT WEEKEND! - Needed non-perishable items, eg., canned meats/fish, beans, soup, baby formula, cereal,

juice boxes, peanut butter. Please bring them to church.

PAPAL MASS TICKETS - 9/25/15

To enter fill out a form at the rectory after Mass today, or by tomorrow that includes the two names, and one contact address and telephone number. Please Note: Tickets are not transferable. Lectio Divina

I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living

Mark 8:27-35

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” In this famous passage about Christian discipleship, we usu-ally tend to focus on Jesus’ call to take up our cross. It can seem as though the choice to be Christian is a choice for pain and suffering. But we must not forget the last part of this verse: Jesus tells us to follow him. He is walking this journey ahead of us. He is the one

who first takes up the cross.

Consider what’s involved in “blazing your own trail.” You have to advance face-first into the brambles and bushes, you have to navigate the right direction to your destination, you have to scale the hills and cross the waters without the aid of stair or bridge. On the other hand, when we hike on a path that someone else has created, we are spared all of these extra trials. Yes, the journey may still be intense, but we make it with confidence, knowing that we are going in the right direction, and that we have every advantage along the way thanks to someone else’s efforts. This

is what it is to follow the path of Christ.
