Our Lady of the Assumption School 2141 Walnut Avenue, Carmichael, CA 95608 (916) 489-8958 November 5, 2013 With Hands to Serve and Hearts to Love Cross Country Kudos Congratulations to our Cross Country team for winning the PAL Championship last Sunday. Details of this victory are in the Sports News section of this bulletin. We wish our Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team luck on Wednesday as they advance to the next round of the PAL Tournament of Champions. Good luck, girls! Thanksgiving November is the month of Thanksgiving, and we are observing it with our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, which takes place next week, November 12 through 15. Each class is in charge of a food item, which is listed in this bulletin. In addition to the food drive, we are having a Thanksgiving prayer service on Wednesday, November 20, at 11:00 a.m., which will include performances by our students in our advance music elective class. We hope you will join us as we reflect on our copious blessings. An Afternoon With Immaculee Ilibagiza. This Saturday, November 9th the parish is putting on “An Afternoon With Immaculee Ilibagiza.” She will melt your heart. She is intelligent, joyful, kind, and loves the Catholic Church. Her story of survival during the Rwandan genocide will never leave you. For 91 harrowing days she and seven other women hid in a 3’ x 4’ bathroom to escape all but certain death. For what seemed like endless days, she and the others listened in terror as 1 million people (including their families, neighbors, and friends) were killed just outside the walls of their hiding place. This will be a huge event and tickets will sell out. Tickets are available online at www.PresentationWYD.org. I think her story of perseverance, faith, hope, love, and forgiveness will be a wonderful faith experience. Veterans’ Day Finally, this Friday we are out school as our faculty attends a day of professional development put on by the Catholic School Department. We are also out of school on Monday, observing Veterans’ Day. We are thankful for the service of our men and women in the Armed Forces past and present, and we honor the sacrifices they have made for us. While we are on the subject of Veterans’ Day, OLA School would, again, like to thank parishioners Bob and Gail Thrasher for donating new United States and California flags, which fly proudly each school day. God Bless America and our veterans. God bless, Robert Love

RCIA – Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Catechism classes for adults wishing to become Catholic are held on Sundays. These classes are for adults who have attended our Inquiry sessions this summer. Please attend 11am Mass, as this will be our regular dismissal. If you are interested in becoming part of this or future groups, please contact Kimberly at 488-4626 for more information. Adult Faith Formation “Catholicism II-The New Evangelization” This new study starts next week. The Catholic Faith is not about myths, legends or symbols…it’s about an encounter so overwhelming that you want to tell the whole world. It is an encounter with Jesus Christ. Throughout history, the call of Christ has sent people to the corners of the earth with a message of great joy, a message that has built civilizations, inspired cultures, and even sent some to prisons and to their graves. We have the same call-that’s the New Evangelization. This new documentary series from Fr. Barron’s Word On Fire, continues the story of CATHOLICISM and explores the Church’s mission and the challenges of contemporary culture. With the original CATHOLICISM series, Fr. Barron took us on a journey around the world deep into the Faith. Now, experience this Faith in action in CATHOLICISM: The New Evangelization. This first series, shown at our parish last fall, taught us what we believe as Catholics. This new 4 part series will teach us how to share our faith with others. This study group will meet on Thursday mornings from 8:45-10am in St. Paul’s room. If you are interested in attending, please contact Kimberly at 488-4626. Class dates are Nov. 14th, Nov. 21st, Dec. 5th, and Dec. 12th. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Adoration takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am-7:00pm. We welcome everyone and would love new volunteers! CAMPAIGN NEWSLETTER

Volume 9 • November 2nd and 3rd, 2013

EVERYONE IS NEEDED! Next Weekend is Commitment Weekend

Commitment Weekend for the ONE Campaign will take place next weekend at our parish. When making your gift, please utilize the personalized pledge card you received at a campaign reception, or the one included in the personalized campaign packets mailed this past week to all registered parishioners who were unable to attend a reception. Don’t forget to go online to www.OneRevival.org to register your faith formation and service commitments as well. It is important to always keep in mind this campaign features a three-pronged challenge from Bishop Jaime Soto: raise $50 million to fund diocesan strategic plan elements, and commit to 5 million service hours and 5 million faith formation hours over the next four years to benefit both local parishes and the Diocese. While parishioners across the Diocese and within our parish have already made significant sacrifices to bring the campaign to over $1,172,835 pledged meeting our challenge to GIVE, we also encourage commitments to SERVE and PRAY.

What are you asked to do? Pray We all know the power of prayer and through prayer we will be successful. Please pray for a successful campaign and the needs it will fund. Share with others Tell your friends, family and fellow parishioners about the campaign and the positive effect it will have on the Diocese and our parish. Accept Bishop Soto’s Challenge We ask each family to prayerfully consider what their financial, service and faith formation sacrifices will be. We are being asked to GIVE, SERVE, PRAY, TOGETHER. Remember, we are not asking for an equal amount from each family but an equal sacrifice of a financial, service and faith formation commitment over 4 years.

Please remember . . . • The Diocese has received pledges of $5,000, $10,000, $25,000 and higher over a 4-year period. If you have been blessed with the ability to make a sacrifice at this level or even higher, we ask you to set the pace as a leader in this campaign keeping in mind that EVERY GIFT OF EVERY LEVEL IS NEEDED, WANTED AND APPRECIATED.

• Pledges are not legally binding but are, rather, obligations in good faith to fulfill to the best of your financial ability.

• Payments on pledges are deductible for income tax purposes as provided by law.

• Payments reminders will be sent according to the payment schedule you select (monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually).

• Please consider a down payment of 10% to help with immediate needs. However, a down payment is NOT necessary to make a pledge.
