PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS*February 23 ~ Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ In today’s Gospel, Jesus makes clear how we are to live: turn the other cheek, hand over your cloak as well as your tunic, asked to walk a mile, walk two. All of this builds up to thehardest of all: LOVE YOUR ENEMIES and PRAY FOR THOSE WHO PERSECUTE YOU. But don’t despair! We fi nd hope in St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians: “… you are the temple of God, … the Spirit of God dwells in you..” We – you – can do anything if you are open to the power of God, the love of Jesus, and the guidance of the Holy Spiri.

PON LA OTRA MEJILLA
“Pero lo que te digo es: no ofrezcas resistencia a las lesiones”. —Mateo 5:39
Jesús suena tan ingenuo. Todos saben que debemos resistir las lesiones. Jesús dice que después de haber sido golpeados en una mejilla, debemos poner la otra. Aparentemente nos matarán si seguimos Su consejo. Sin embargo, el Sermón del Monte no es un “consejo”; Es el mandato del Señor. No obstante, racionalizamos que el mensaje de Jesús en el Sermón del Monte es poético, simbólico, cualquier cosa menos literal. A veces Jesús no habla literalmente, como cuando dijo que nos sacara los ojos (Mt 5:29). Entonces estamos tentados a asumir que el Sermón del Monte, especialmente esta parte de él, no debe ser literal. Sin embargo, Jesús literalmente puso la otra mejilla, entregó Sus vestiduras y caminó un kilómetro más, hasta el Monte Calvario para ser crucifi cado (Mt 5: 39-41). Si negamos que el Sermón del Monte sea literal, podemos estar negando que debemos imitar al Cristo crucifi cado. Jesús literalmente nos está llamando a hacer un cambio de sentido y vivir un estilo de vida radicalmente diferente. Seguir a Jesús no es solo una modifi cación de una vida mundana, sino una forma completamente nueva de vivir.
¿Decidirás ser cristiano en los términos de Jesús, no como lo son otras personas, no como quieres, sino como Él quiere? Acepta el Predicador y la predicación del Sermón del Monte. Un Pan, Un Cuerpo
TURN THE OTHER CHEEK
“But what I say to you is: off er no resistance to injury.” —Matthew 5:39
Jesus sounds so naive. Everybody knows we must resist injury. Jesus says that after we’ve been hit on one cheek, we should turn the other. We’ll seemingly get killed if we take His advice. However, the Sermon on the Mount is not “advice”; it is the Lord’s command. Nonetheless, we rationalize that Jesus’ message in the Sermon on the Mount is poetic, symbolic, anything but literal. Sometimes Jesus does not speak literally, as when He said to gouge out our eye (Mt 5:29). So we’re tempted to assume the Sermon on the Mount, especially this part of it, must not be literal. Yet Jesus did literally turn the other cheek, hand over His garments and walk the extra mile, even up Mount Calvary to be crucifi ed (Mt 5:39-41). If we deny that the Sermon on the Mount is literal, we may be denying that we must imitate the crucifi ed Christ. Jesus is literally calling us to make a U-turn and live a radically diff erent lifestyle. Following Jesus is not just a modifi cation of a worldly life, but an utterly new way to live. Will you decide to be a Christian on Jesus’ terms — not as other people are, not as you want, but as He wills? Accept the Preacher and the preaching of the Sermon on the Mount.
