A small but enthusiastic group of parishioners gathered out-side the church for our first public Masses since March 15. They patiently accommodated the changes required for health and safety, including face masks and social distancing. A dedicated cohort of ministers and clergy welcomed them back into the church, and accomplished the mission of serving the banquet of the Word and Sacrament on the feast of Corpus Christi.

Again, we ask parishioners to “take turns’ and allow others to have the same experience by reserving a seat every other week or once a month.

This week, Monday, we will welcome parishioners back to daily Mass at 8 a.m., but retain the live-streaming option. Eucharistic Adoration in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament will be available in the Reflection Room, not live-streamed.

Changes in the way we celebrate Mass in church: • Reservations must be made to attend Mass Saturday at 4 p.m.,

Sunday at 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 1 p.m. (Spanish), 3 p.m. (Vietnamese) and 7 p.m. This allows us to limit the number of people in the church. Sign up on our website beginning every Wednesday at noon. Or be notified via Flocknote with a sign up link. (See Page 5 for more about Flocknote and a complete schedule of public and live-streamed Masses.)

• Reservations for DAILY Masses, Mon-Sat, at 8 a.m. and Eucharistic Adoration in the Reflection Room from 9 to 11:45 a.m. are available.

• Every person must wear a mask! Children under two should proba-bly be left at home; stay home if you have a respiratory problem and can’t wear a mask.

• Persons 65+ yrs. or with a medical condition are advised not to attend public services, says Archbishop Gomez, who gives a dispensation to those who cannot attend in person.

• Everyone must clean their hands upon entering church. Sanitizer will be provided.

• Each person or family unit will be required to maintain a six-foot so-cial distance when seated in the pew or standing in the single-file Communion line.

• All points of contact in the church will be disinfected between services by our maintenance staff.

• All Masses will be kept brief, and people will be asked to leave imme-diately to allow time for disinfecting the church. No socializing in groups outside the church is permitted.

New public options at OLA 2

Help Wanted Do to the expanded Mass schedule in the church, there is an urgent need for volunteers to train to oper-ate the camera that live-streams and records the Mass. If you are comfortable with technology, and willing to share your free time, please email Mary Munoz at [email protected] or leave a message at (909) 626-3596, ext. 4263.

Eucharistic Adoration

Eucharistic Adoration in the Reflection Room is availa-ble starting Monday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in 30-minute reservations:

– 9 to 9:30 a.m. (Break for cleaning) – 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. (Break for cleaning) – 10:30 to 11 a.m. (Break for cleaning) – 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. (Final cleaning)

Reservations will be limited to eight persons at a time. Visit our parish website, www.olaclaremont.org, to make a reservation. Masks are required.

5A Gratitude is our antidote

Even in the most of times, there is much to be grateful Benedictine Brother David Steindl-Rast points to the importance of gratitude even in (or especially in) the difficult of times. He offers three steps for practicing gratitude that seem especially Step One – Wake Up: What surprises you, what helps you to not take life and goodness for granted? “Surprise may provide a jolt,

wake us up and to stop taking everything for But we may not at all like that ‘How can I be grateful for something like this?’ we may howl in the midst of a sudden calamity. And why? Because are not aware of the real gift in this given situation – Step Two – Be Aware of As we wake up to the many blessings in our lives, we realize that these gifts offer us

This will help meet the in-creased need for assistance to local individuals and fami-lies at this time. NOTE: The ACTS Thrift Store is open for donations from 8:30 a.m. to noon; sorry, no pick-up service.

Operation Rice Bowl The Faith Formation Center would like to thank the

families who contributed to Operation Rice Bowl this spring for a total of $290 for Catholic Relief Services. During Lent, families were encouraged to prepare a sim-ple meal once a week and put their savings into a fund for the hungry people of the world. Our report was de-layed by the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Crossroads update Crossroads, Inc., in Claremont was unable to host its

annual fundraiser due to restrictions on large gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic. Anyone who would like to help compensate for this loss of income to benefit formerly incarcerated women may make a donation at www.crossroadswomen.org. The non-profit is helping women coming out of prison adjust to the Covid-19 world with transitional housing and programs to support economic self-sufficiency.

OLA outreach during Covid-19 crisis

Deacon Jim Allgaier suggests three ways that OLA parishioners may assist those bearing a greater share of the burden during the crisis. Call him at (909) 626-3596, ext. 4216, or email [email protected]. 1. Young adults may volunteer for child care or

tutoring of families in need; 2. Volunteers may help run errands/shop for the

elderly who may be homebound; 3. Food donations may be brought to the OLA

parish office. The beneficiaries are 70 fami-lies at St. Madeleine’s Church in Pomona.

Racism: Discussion Guide from our Youth Minister

Many people, even those of us who serve in the Church, avoid talking about race and racism. Emotions al-most always run high in these conversations, which generally makes us uncomfortable. These conversations also demand skills that most of us are not used to employing on a regular basis, so they seem intimidating. Many of us are afraid that we might misspeak, unintentionally appear to be racist, or do more harm than good so we err on the side of caution, which leads us to largely remain silent. However, as difficult as having these types of conversations may be it’s important we have them.

Below are some Guidelines and Conversation Starters that will hopefully help you to begin to have the con-versation with your teens and young children. As you move forward, be honest about your vulnerabilities, own your strengths, and commit to addressing your needs as you get ready for these conversations with your family or friends.

Jesus Rodriguez, Coordinator of Youth Ministry Guidelines for Discussion

BEGIN IN PRAYER: Prayer reminds us that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ who equally need God’s grace to become whole and holy. Prayer unites us, softens our hearts, and allows space for God’s will to be done.

USE “I FEEL...” AND “MY EXPERIENCE IS…” STATEMENTS: It is important that comments stay rooted in “I” statements, instead of speaking for other individuals or groups of people. Speak only from your unique point of view and lived experience. For example, “Based on what ___ said, I think…”

LISTEN TO UNDERSTAND AND SPEAK CHARITABLY: A good practice in any kind of dialogue is to listen for understanding, rather than listening for the sake of crafting your response. When speaking, avoid talking over or interrupting others, and always treat others in a way that is loving and respectful.

RESPECT THE EXPERIENCES OF OTHERS: As people share their stories and perspectives around the topic of race, recognize that it is not our job to judge their experiences. Instead, respect their stories and offer a safe space for them to share by listening with compassion.

ALWAYS ASSUME GOOD INTENTIONS: Because of the variety of experiences in this discussion, it is important that we set the tone for our discussion as one of humility. We are all here to learn, but we can also teach one another. As we share, it is important to approach every person as if they are speaking with no malice.

Conversation Starters 1. What have you witnessed or heard that has affected you the most? 2. Moving forward, is there anything we can do, as a family, to constantly make room for others in our lives? 3. Do you think there is a need in our society to “hit the reset button” on how we approach racial injustice in our world today? Why or why not?

OLA YouTube You will find a NEW video by Victor Hernandez as well as homilies on the top-ic of racism by our Deacon Bob Steighner (June 6) and Deacon Joe Domond (June 7) on OLA’s YouTube channel.

Olaclaremont.org The topic of Catholics Against Racism is featured on our website with messages from Archbishop Gomez, the U.S. Bish-ops, Angeles News, and a link to the doc-ument Open Wide Our Hearts, a complete explanation of Catholic Social Teaching on responding to racism.

Here’s the latest from our staff ZOOM meeting! Victor Hernandez, Faith Formation Director, r epor ted a positive re-action to his YouTube presentation about a Catholic response to racism. Mariela Arellano leads the next installment about how to listen, dis-cern a personal response and take action. The first in the series was done by Jesus Rodriguez. Baptisms will resume in the church soon; the parish has a “back-log” of 20 children who will be the first in line. The class of 150 children who are ready for First Reconciliation/First Communion will be divided into groups of 25 to receive the sacraments in the church. Jesus Rodriguez is working on plans for the sacramental celebration of Confirmation for our 91 candidates this year. Mary Muñoz is almost finished with the task of editing our fir st Wor-ship and Praise online videos. She has also put out a call for volunteers to assist with operating the camera in church to live-stream and record the Masses (see Page 2). Deacon Jim Allgaier repor ts that the JustAct ministry is planning an educational module on racism; stand by for more information later. Jean McKenna anticipates the ar r ival of a large banner for the corner of Berkeley and Bonita to encourage the community during the crisis. Father Charles has been working on the purchase of a special disin-fecting machine for the church to streamline cleaning between services. Father Gabriel has facilitated the star t of daily public Mass at 8 a.m. and Eucharistic Adoration in the Reflection Room; reservations will be required at this time (see Page 2). Another Mass in English at 7 p.m. has been added to the schedule of public Masses. Father Chris continues his role as facilitator of the Spanish Commu-nity, and appreciated the celebration of his anniversary of ordination at the first public Spanish Mass. Father Paul r epor ted that the Vietnamese Community was happy to return to the church last weekend. They built a new, light-weight platform for the statue of Our Lady of the Assumption in hopes of using it in pro-cession at our parish feast day August 15. Neomi Torres announced that no fur loughs of staff will be necessary, in consultation with members of the Finance Council. Plans for our Fiesta, which usually garners $100,000 for the parish, are still TBA. Bernadette Boyle and Cindy Corrales r epor ted a wonder ful gradua-tion day for eighth graders. The focus is now on plans for the re-opening of school on Aug. 24, hopefully, back in the classrooms following all guidelines for health and safety. New interest in the school is strong.

Scripture Readings for Sunday, June 21 12th Sunday – 12a Domingo 11

NOTE: You will find readings for every day of the year at www.USCCB.org, the website of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (English/Español).

Second Reading: Romans 5: 12-15 Brothers and sisters: Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all men, inasmuch as all sinned— for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world, though sin is not accounted when there is no law. But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin after the pattern of the trespass of Adam, who is the type of the one who was to come. But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many.

Gospel in English: Matthew 10:26-33 Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.

And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”
