Fif th Sunday of Easter

SHEPHERD’S VOICE Jesus said: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; No one comes to the Father, but by me. (John 14:6).

Let this be our material for Reflection this Sunday: As much as we try to avoid it, we all inevita-bly encounter troubles and trials, and sometimes more than we think we can handle! We are wor-ried about so many things-finances, children, future, peace and order, flood, tornado, hurricanes, relationships, and work. Jesus knew that his disciples would have to face adversity and trials after he left them to return to his Father. Jesus assured them that his departure is for their good, in order to secure a place for them in God’s house – a place of refuge, peace, and everlasting happiness. If the Father's home in heaven is our destination, how can we find our way without a map or a guide? The scriptures speak of the way that leads to peace and union with God. And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not pass over it, and fools shall not err therein (Isaiah). Teach me your way, O Lord; and lead me on a level path (Psalm 27:11). You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the way which the Lord your God has commanded you (Deuteronomy 5:32-33). Jesus proclaims: I am the Way. The Lord Jesus does not simply give counsel and direction. He personally is the way, and we cannot miss it if we follow him. He leads and guides us personally every day. The Lord Jesus also is the Truth. Many can say, "I have taught you the truth." Only Jesus can say, I am the Truth. Moral truth cannot be conveyed in words alone; it must be conveyed in example. Jesus embodies the truth in his per-son. Jesus also is the Life. He not only shows us the path of life (Psalm 16:11); he gives the kind of life which only God can give – eternal and abundant life. Is there any fear or trouble which keeps you from the perfect peace and happiness of a life surrendered to Jesus Christ? Jesus shows us the true aim and purpose for our life – what we were created for – and what we should strive for with all of our strength and being. What is that purpose? Primarily, it is to know God. The best thing in life, bringing more joy, contentment, life and happiness, is the Knowledge of God. Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wis-dom, let not the mighty glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows me” (Jeremiah 9:23-24). One of the greatest truths of the Christian faith is that we can know the living God. Our knowledge of God is not simply limited to knowing something about God, but we can know God personally. The essence of Christianity, and what makes it distinct from Judaism and other religions, is the knowledge of God as our Father. Jesus makes it possible for each of us to personally know God as our Father. To see Jesus is to see what God is like. In Jesus we see the perfect love of God – a God who cares intensely and who yearns over men and women, loving them to the point of laying down his life for them upon the Cross. Jesus is the revelation of God – a God who loves us com-pletely, unconditionally, and perfectly for our good. Jesus also promises that God the Father will hear our prayers when we pray in his name. That is why Jesus taught his followers to pray with confi-dence, Our Father who art in heaven ..give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6:9). Do you pray to your Father in heaven with joy and confidence in his love and care for you? Let this be our prayer: "Lord Jesus, you fill us with the joy of your saving presence and you give us the hope of everlasting life with the Father in Heaven. Make us believe Lord Jesus that in you and only in you, there is a way, there is truth, and there is life.” Amen. God Bless, Fr. Roni

Prayer for All Mothers

O almighty and eternal God, Lord of both the living and the dead, Your tender mercy embraces all men foreknown to be Yours by faith and a good life. Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Vir-gin Mary our Mother, and of all the saints, grant Your merciful pardon to all moth-ers for whom we pray, whether they still are living in this world or have de-parted from this flesh into the world to come. Espe-cially, dear Lord, grant the requests I now make of You for my own beloved mother.

D C P N "Between Divine Mercy Sunday and Pentecost Sunday, the celebration of our 40th Anniversary as a diocese, Bishop Fa-bre has called for an intentional time of prayer for each of our church parishes in the diocese. For the next 39 days, starting Monday, April 24, he is inviting us to join him in prayer each day for a different church parish in the diocese. You can find a Church Parish Novena Card in the back of church. There is a daily prayer on the card, as well as what church parish to pray for each day. May we join Bishop Fabre and all the faithful during this intentional time of prayer for the renewal of our parishes. You can learn more about this novena and each of our church parishes in the diocese at htdiocese.org/churchparishnovena.

D 40 A C The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux will joyfully celebrate its 40th Anniversary on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2017, at 2PM at the Cathedral of St. Francis de Sales. All of the faithful of the Diocese are invited to participate in this momentous histor-ical milestone in our diocese. A reception will follow the Mass.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In many parish churches, more rarely in monastery churches and cathedrals, the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament is visible from a doorway or aisle in the church. Normally, a person is to give the proper sign of reverence, a genuflection, when passing in proximity to the tabernac-le. The word “genuflect” comes from Latin roots meaning bending (or flexing) the knee. A common-sense exception to the rule is for a sacristan who is taking care of the church and can’t be genuflecting every thirty seconds dur-ing a vacuum run. Also excepted are persons in proces-sion entrusted with important symbols of the Lord’s pres-ence. So, a crossbearer or a minister carrying the Gospel book, or ministers on their way to their Communion sta-tions do not genuflect. For everyone else, the usual sign of reverence for the Lord’s presence in the Blessed Sacra-ment is to genuflect on the right knee. The oldest form of reverence during prayer in our tradi-tion is standing; kneeling or genuflecting is a sign borrowed from old civic practice. The posture of kneeling, even on one knee, is a sign of submission. Servants would take this position before their masters in the ancient world. It said: I’m not running away, I’m yours, I’m here for you. This is what your genuflection says when you enter a Catholic church where the place of reservation of the Blessed Sac-rament is visible to you: I’m yours. —Rev. James Field, © Copyright, J. S.
