From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners Last Sunday, I had the pleasure of participating in the Rite of Election at Saint Mary’s Cathedral. In an impressive ceremony before a “packed” Cathedral, Bishop O’Connell enrolled Catechumens from nearly every parish in the diocese as “Elect” to be admitted to the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. A catechumen is a person who is under instruction for Baptism. Being enrolled as “Elect” marks one’s final, more intense preparation for the reception of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Eucharist. Among the new Elect at our Cathedral were two of our own parish—Lily Menchaca and Nicholas Paterson—to whom we offer our prayerful best wishes. They enter now a period of preparation, consisting more of interior reflection than of catechetical instruction. On the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent at our 9:30 a.m. Mass, the Elect will celebrate the “Scrutinies”—rites that are intended to move them to purify their hearts and minds as they search their own consciences and do penance. We shall also want to keep in our prayers those baptized who have been prepared over many weeks for their reception into the Catholic Church and those Catholics desiring to complete their sacramental initiation. They will also be part of the impressive liturgy of the Solemn Easter Vigil—Jonathan Brunt, Edward Malec, Joanna Howard, Michele Cade, and Melissa Paterson. Special thanks to our R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) team and to all for their prayers! With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Happy 100th!

May God bless you

on your 100th birthday, Ida Koerner!

Enskri kòm "Eli" make dènye etap pou yon preparasyon pi entansif pou resepsyon Batèm, Konfimasyon ak premyè Kominyon. Nou gen 2 pami nouvo eli yo ki soti nan pawas nou an.Non yo se: Lily Menchaca ak Nicholas Paterson. Nou prezante yo konplimam nou. Koulyea yo rantre nan on peryòd de preparasyon, ki gen ladann plis ke anseyman katechis la. Nan 3e, 4e ak 5e semèn TanKarèm nan, nan Lamès 9:30am nan, eli yo pral fete "kontwòl"—rit ki destine a deplase yo pou pirifye kè yo ak lespri yo pou yo egzaminen pwòp konsyans yo epi pou yo al konfese. Nou pral kenbe nan lapriyè batize sa yo ki ap prepare pandan plizyè semèn pou nou akeyi yo nan Legliz Katolik epi Katolik sa yo ta renmen konplete Sakreman Inisyasyon yo. Yo pral fè pati egalman de bèl seremoni Solanèl Veye Fèt Pak la—Jonathan Brunt, Edward Malec, Joanna Howard, Michele Cade, ak Melissa Paterson. Yon mèsi espesyal a ekip RCIA a ( Rit Inisyasyon Kretyen pou Adilt) epitou ak nou tout moun pou lapriyè nou! Avèk afeksyon,

Msgr. Gervasio

From His Excellency, Bishop David O’Connell Lenten Dispensation-March 17

There are very few days in the Church year for penitential abstinence from meat as a sacrifice. It is serious enough an obligation as to be listed as one of the “Precepts of the Church.” I am happy this year to give a dispensation from the Lenten abstinence requirement for those attending a St. Patrick’s Day celebration in a parish or other Catholic organization, but ask our Catholics attending that dinner/event to transfer the Lenten abstinence sacrifice to Thursday, March 16.

Join us on March 12

Join your fellow parishioners for coffee & conversation after the Sunday Masses

at Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Anthony.

Summer Religious Education

The Summer Program is offered to our parishioners as an alternative to the traditional once-a-week class format that is held from September through May. This year, the Summer Program will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows School on weekdays from June 22 through July 6, except for July 4 (Independence Day), from 9 a.m. until noon. The Summer Program seeks to accommodate the busy schedules of our families by eliminating the weekly “shuttling” of children to the parish campus from September through May. Class time is the same as the regular program but condensed into a two-week period. This “intensive” plan provides for a more focused approach and retention of the subject matter. Students will stay “connected” to the parish throughout the year through weekly Mass and by attending 3 catechetical sessions during the Advent, Lent, & Easter Seasons. Parental involvement is expected. It is open to students of Grades 3 -6. For information & registration forms, please call Mrs. Francis at 587-4372.

Rosary Altar Society News The Prayer Shawl Group will meet on Monday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m. in the Church Meeting Room. Prayer shawls are made for patients in area hospitals, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. If you or anyone you know is interested in making prayer shawls, or you wish to donate yarn, please contact Joyce Farina at 888-0437. If you have any completed prayer shawls or if you wish to donate yarn, call Joyce and she will make arrangements to meet with you. We also ask that you refrain from dropping off any completed prayer shawls or yarn at the parish office, and instead, call Joyce.

OLS PTA Seeking Donations The Our Lady of Sorrows PTA needs your support. We are hosting our annual Knight to Remember auction on October 20 at the Stone Terrace in Hamilton. Last year our auction was very successful, raising more than $18,000 to support our school. We hope that you will join us in supporting us by donating NEW ITEMS for our event. If you have any gifts you are not able to use or return, we are happy to take them for our auction. If you have a donation, please contact us to arrange for pick-up or drop off at the OLS School Office by September 15, 2017. On behalf of the students at Our Lady of Sorrows, thank you very much for your support. Please feel free to contact me (Debbie Kisselman—439-2667; [email protected]) if I can be of assistance.

News from Your Parish School There is really nothing like "striking" up a great conversation with your children! At Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School we ensure there is quality time set aside for good quality family time. As a school, our PTA hosts events that allow families to plan for meaningful outings and local events that build and support loving families. Friday night was just such an evening. The "boys" of OLS joined their moms for a special night out. We celebrated a Mother-Son Fun Night! Carpooling and van rides provided a fun time to laugh and enjoy mother and son time. They motored to Mount Laurel to spend a "cool evening" at the Funplex! Moms, doesn't it sound exciting to jump into bumper cars for some action with your son? While family time is always special, it's really wonderful when we can schedule quality time together. Yes, they planned for a fun pizza dinner together, bowling, and even laser tag! Of course, you couldn't really say the evening was complete without a group photo to remember a special night with your mom! Can we ever have too many of these kinds of nights? Not really, so we are sure to make parent-child nights and family activities a cornerstone of life at Our Lady of Sorrows School. Valentine's Day was a great time for a Father-Daughter Dance, and that's just what we did! Flowers, picture moments and a special time with a special young lady. Our Lady of Sorrows School is about faith, families and nurturing a loving school day. Stop in to find out more. We are now in open admission, and financial support is available to make a Catholic school education a reality for your family.

Wanted: Nurses Who Love Children! Our Lady of Sorrows School is seeking nurses with active licensing for part-time work. Our school serves students in Grades Kindergarten through 8. If you enjoy working with children, we would love to meet you. Currently, we are seeking someone that might be available on an “as needed” basis. Our hours are flexible and the environment is fun! Consider joining our team! Please contact the school at 587-4140.

Tax Info If you would like to pick up a copy of your 2016 contribution statement, please call the parish office (587-4372). Statements may be picked up after 2 p.m. on the Friday after you call in your request. If you would prefer to have your statement mailed to you, please put a business-size self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) in the collection basket or mail or drop one off to the parish office (beneath OLS Church). Statements will be mailed only to those who have provided a SASE.

The Annual Catholic Appeal in Action Evangelization - Multicultural Ministry

This ministry brings attention to the most pressing needs and concerns of our growing diverse community, and assists parishes and diocesan offices as they address the needs that are identified.

Eucharistic Adoration Our faith teaches us that Jesus remains present in his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Sacrament that is reserved in the tabernacle.

Thursdays Are Days of Solemn Adoration The Blessed Sacrament will be placed upon the altar following the 7 a.m. Mass until Reposition at 6 p.m. All are invited to answer the Lord’s call…He wants us give Him the gift of our time. He wants us to come to Him bringing our needs, anxieties, joys, and thanks. Our Lady of Sorrows Church also is open during our office hours. Why not stop for even a brief moment to rejoice in the Lord’s Presence?

Faith in Our Future Lord Jesus Christ, Word of the Father, we turn to you. Watch over our plans. Enliven our service to the Church. Sustain our labors. Guide our steps in search of the best ways to proclaim your Gospel. Our poverty is great. We do not place trust in ourselves but only in you. Encourage us, reassure us, give us your blessing. You, who with the Holy Spirit, live and reign in us and in your Church forever and ever. Amen.

Two Great Saints of March

Saint Patrick, Bishop, Apostle of Ireland Optional Memorial: March 17

St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain. At the age of fourteen he was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans but Patrick turned to God. His captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in

which he was told to leave Ireland. At the coast, sailors took him back to Britain where he was reunited with his family. A few years later, in a vision, Patrick was directed to return to Ireland, which he would eventually do after his ordination as a priest and bishop. Arriving in Slane on March 25, 433, he met the chieftan of one of the Druid tribes, who tried to kill him. After an intervention from God, Patrick was able to convert the chieftain and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. Over the next forty years, conversions abounded, churches arose, and Ireland was brought to the Catholic faith. After years of living in poverty, traveling, and sacrifices, Patrick died on March 17, 461 at Saul. He is believed to be buried in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick. "The Breastplate," Patrick's poem of trust in God:

Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

Saint Joseph Solemnity-March 19

(this year, transferred to March 20)

Our knowledge of Saint Joseph comes from Scripture. He was a carpenter, a working man. He was the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the guardian or foster father of the Lord. He wasn't rich, for when he took Jesus to the Temple to be circumcised and Mary to be purified he offered the sacrifice of two turtledoves or a pair of pigeons, allowed only for those who could not afford a lamb (Luke 2:24). Despite these humble means, Joseph came from a royal lineage. Luke and Matthew both mark his descent from King David. Indeed the angel who first tells Joseph about Jesus greets him with the royal title, "son of David.” When he discovered Mary was pregnant after they had been betrothed, he knew the child was not his but was as yet unaware that she was carrying the Son of God. He knew women accused of adultery could be stoned to death. The compassionate Joseph resolved not to expose her to shame or cruelty. In fact, at the angel’s assurance in a dream, Joseph took Mary as his wife. After the birth of Jesus, Joseph protected Mary and Jesus by fleeing to Egypt when he learned that Herod sought the death of the divine child. He returned to Nazareth after the danger passed. When Jesus stayed in the Temple we are told Joseph (along with Mary) searched for him with great anxiety for three days. Joseph treated Jesus as his own son. Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus' public life, it is generally believed that Joseph probably died before Jesus entered public ministry. Joseph is the patron saint of the dying because, assuming he died before Jesus' public life, he died with Jesus and Mary close to him, the way we all would like to leave this earth. Joseph is also patron saint of the Universal Church, families, fathers, expectant mothers, travelers, immigrants, house sellers and buyers, craftsmen, engineers, and working people in general.

Home Health Nursing Program:

Our Lenten Work of Mercy

While there are people in need all over the world, we sometimes forget those in our own community who need help. Recognizing this, Monsignor Gervasio and the parish’s Social Justice Committee have brought Our Lenten Work of Mercy closer to home this year. Mount Carmel Guild, a diocesan Social Service agency, serves Mercer County residents through its Emergency Assistance and Home Health Nursing programs. Almost a century old, Mount Carmel Guild has been “seeing Christ in others” since its founding in 1920 by Msgr Thomas J Walsh.

Since Our Lady of Sorrows – St. Anthony Parish donates food year-round to the Guild’s Emergency Assistance program, our Lenten Work of Mercy will focus on Home Health Nursing. This is a service that is unique to “the Guild.”

There’s probably nothing more dignified than the ability to remain in your home as you age—to age gracefully; to keep your independence, your history, your world. But as medical needs increase this isn’t always possible.

Home Health Nursing program’s primary goal is to provide long-term home-based nursing care to the most medically needy and economically disadvantaged senior citizens of Mercer County—those whose Medicare insurance has been exhausted and who have no alternative care. Patients live with geriatric diseases such

as diabetes, hypertension, lung and heart disease, stroke, cancer, neuromuscular disorders, and arthritis. Most are ambulatory with canes or walkers; some use wheelchairs. The program staff helps them to stay in the comfortable surroundings of their own homes, preventing premature placement in institutions. The nurses also:

Pre-fill insulin syringes Pre-pour medications Monitor vital signs and blood sugars Conduct pacemaker checks Give injections Provide wound care Monitor Coumadin levels

Staff nurses provide more to their patients than just skilled medical care. They provide comfort and companionship to those who are lonely and make referrals to other services such as Meals on Wheels, transportation to and from medical appointments, and full time home health assistance, if needed. They also provide emergency food packages from the Guild’s Emergency Assistance program for anyone who is short of food and on a fixed income.

The nursing staff makes hundreds of home visits each year, providing more than 2,000 hours of assistance. Most importantly, the Guild’s Home Health Nursing Staff serves older patients with the kindness and compassion that everyone deserves.

Give up anything you want for Lent—candy, smoking, movies, dining out—then each week, calculate how much money you saved and bring it to church to put in one of the Lenten Work of Mercy cans at the exits. And pray for the program staff and those they serve.
