THIS WEEK ~ OLOS LENTEN MISSION 2017

“Strengthening Our Community in Christ”

A Community Meal and Discussion Sunday, March 5th, 6:00-7:00 PM

Come to one night or come to all three. We would love to see you there! Free babysitting services will be offered in the Bullock Center each evening.

As our Global Church moves into the season of Lent, our parish is entering a new season as well. At this time, it is as important as ever to strengthen our community. Let us explore

together how the pillars of Lent -- prayer, fasting and almsgiving -- can strengthen us, as a community and as individuals, for spiritual renewal.

Celebration of the Eucharist: Reverend Paul Soper, Homilist

Tuesday, March 7th, 7:30-8:30 PM

Join us in O'Connell Hall for simple dinner, a talk and a discussion led by Amber Ezeani, Evangelization Consultant

from the Archdiocese of Boston. This is a time to strengthen community through conversation and

fellowship.

Lenten Evening Prayer: Reflection offered by Liz Cotrupi

Monday, March 6th, 7:30-8:30 PM

This ancient lay-led prayer tradition will nourish and inspire you with beautiful music, scripture and relevant reflections in a quiet candle lit atmosphere. Liz Cotrupi, Evangelization

Consultant from the Archdiocese of Boston, will offer the evening's reflection and will lead a discussion in the church,

immediately following Evening Prayer.

We will conclude our Lenten Mission with a Mass, strengthening our community through communion - the

Eucharist, the source and summit of the Christian Life. The Homilist is Fr. Paul Soper, the Director of Pastoral Planning

for the Archdiocese of Boston.

Catholic Appeal Next week, Catholics across the Archdiocese will be invited to pledge their support to the 2017 Catholic Appeal. The Appeal helps to maintain and expand the many ministries that serve the Catholic faithful in our part of Christ’s vineyard. Please be sure to read the insert in today’s bulletin to see how these ministries impact our parish and the life of our church.

My Dear Friends in Christ,

It is with a full heart that I write to share the news that I received from the Archdiocese of Boston Clergy Personnel Board this past week that I will be leaving Our Lady of Sorrows on June 1st of this year. Throughout my two years as OLOS’s temporary Administrator, I have grown to love and care deeply for this community. Your energy, dedication and goodness are evident in the love that you share, bringing to mind the song, “they will know we are Christians by our love.” You have been an inspiration to me, and it has been a blessing to serve you. Our Lady of Sorrows has been assigned her next pastor, Fr. Frank Daly, who will be writing and visiting to introduce himself in the upcoming weeks and months before he begins his assignment here in June. I hope that you will show to him the same support that you have shown to me throughout my time here. As Our Lady of Sorrows moves forward as a collaborative of one with Fr. Daly, may you feel energized by the love of Christ and the knowledge that you are the body of Christ. In a time of transition, the strength of the parish depends on you. I pray that you will continue to lean on your rich history of strong lay leadership and a commitment to dialogue. Finally, I want to thank all of you for your love, prayers, and support, and ask that you continue to keep me in your prayers. Sincerely, Fr. Vincent Doolan

She received her Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Harvard College and her Juris Doctorate from Northeastern University School of Law.

Catholic Relief Services Lenten Community Dinner OLOS is hosting a Lenten Community Dinner after the 4:30 PM Mass on Saturday, March 18th, in O'Connell Hall. There are many ways to participate: help prepare a simple Kenyan meal (Mukimo) from 2:30-3:30 PM, help set up the hall for the dinner from 3:30-4:30 PM or attend the dinner and presentation by Kathleen Crawford from 5:30-6:30 PM. This event is an opportunity to learn about Kenya and the role that CRS plays in alleviating poverty there, and also to hear about the impact of your Rice Bowl donations. Children are welcome at all portions of this event. For more information and to sign up, visit the parish website (our Lent page) or contact Teresa Coda.

Lenten Reconciliation Service The Church encourages all Catholics to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation each Lent. Join us for a Reconciliation Service on Sunday, March 26th at 7:30 PM. We will pray together and then several priests will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. If you have not participated in a Reconciliation Service before, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience this Sacrament.

Bagged Lunches Brigade ~ Sunday, April 2nd 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM We’re preparing bagged lunches and need your donations and your help! Mainspring House, a homeless shelter in Boston, depends on bagged lunches to serve to hungry men, women and children who are unable to make it to specific meal times at The Table, the soup kitchen within the shelter. Please consider donating food items for the lunches (due on Saturday, April 1) or your time. Volunteers will pack bagged lunches in the Bullock Center and deliver them to Mainspring House. This service opportunity is open to children as well as teens and adults. To sign up to donate (and to view a list of what is needed) or to volunteer, see the “Bagged Lunches Brigade” notice on the homepage of the parish website. Questions? Contact Teresa Coda.

CRS Rice Bowl Join our faith community—and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States—in a life-changing Lenten journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your Rice Bowl today and don’t forget to download the CRS Rice Bowl app! May these 40 days of Lent better prepare us to encounter ourselves, our neighbors and our God.

Live Stations of the Cross ~ All are Welcome March 12, 2017, 730-830 PM in the Church. Thank you to all our Middle and High School students who have volunteered to help present a moving Live Stations of the Cross event on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 7:30 PM in the Church. We still have room for additional roles to be filled, so if you are interested in joining our fabulous group of student actors, please join us on Sunday, March 5 from 2:30 - 4 PM for our rehearsal in the Church. While all main characters have been casted, we are still in need of 4 or 5 youth or adult volunteers to help with the silent roles of soldiers. If you are interested in taking on one of these roles, please join us for our March 5 rehearsal, and contact AnneMarie Dion to receive a copy of the script.

Middle School Youth Night ~ Spring into Action! April 7, 2017 ,7:30 to 10 PM in O’Connell Hall. All youth currently enrolled in Middle School are invited to attend our next Youth Night on Friday, April 7, 2017. Join us for a rousing game of foosball, team up for some competitive ping-pong or take in a movie all while feasting on an array of tasty snacks! New this month: earn one (1) prize ticket for every friend you bring with you and introduce to our Youth Night festivities--and at the end of the night, pick a prize from the Prize Bin! Bring 3 or more friends and you can pick from the Special Prize Bin! Additional activities and crafts will be offered throughout the night.

From Senior Deacon Mike:

The ashes are blessed; the congregants come forward. The minister imposes ashes upon the congregant. “…remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return…” We embrace our Lenten journey anew!

Last Sunday, February 26th, Evan Richards was

baptized by Deacon Frank . Please join us in welcoming Evan and his parents, Ianmichael

and Jessica to the Our Lady of Sorrows family.

Changes to the Mass for the Lenten Season

The parish Liturgy Committee has been evaluating how we worship with the help of the General Instruction on the Roman Missal. It is the manual on how to celebrate the Mass that establishes standards for authentic worship and promotes liturgical options.

We are implementing some changes as we enter the season of Lent.

At the beginning of Mass we will use option one for the reconciliation rite. This is the one that begins, “I confess to Almighty God, and to you my brothers and sisters” and is found on the inside front cover of the hymnal. Next, instead of saying “Lord, have mercy; Christ have mercy” we will sing the ancient Greek trope, “Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison.”

Likewise, we will sing the Agnus Dei, instead of “Lamb of God,” just before communion. We will use a very simple chant setting.

The most noticeable change will be one that has no words. Every scripture reading is an invitation to the conversion of our hearts and minds. The General Instruction calls for silence between the readings, after the homily and after communion. You can be assured that the lector has not lost his or her place. Rather, silence offers us moments to think about what we have heard and to begin to prayerfully respond to God’s Word.

On the first Sunday of Lent, the choirs will have been moved to the stage behind the altar. The baptismal font and paschal candle will relocate to the area where the choir currently resides. The major reason for the change is improved acoustics. This is an experiment that we will conduct for the seasons of Lent and Easter.

The changes are not for novelty’s sake. Rather, we are plumbing the depths of our rich Catholic tradition to enhance our worship. The goal is to nurture our prayer experience and let the liturgy bring us even closer to God. Thank you for your understanding and good will as we move forward. ~ The Liturgy Committee
