ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FAST ING, AND TEMPTAT ION
As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy
reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and]
shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our
prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone
who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words,
and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of
Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be
human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil
comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we
too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — God brought us into this land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 26:4-10). Psalm — Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble (Psalm 91). Second Reading — The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (Romans 10:8-13). Gospel — Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led into the desert for forty days (Luke 4:1-13).

Fr. Joseph with visiting clergy will

Is there something you have done that you fear God won’t forgive? Do you think God’s justice is greater than his love? Jesus made it clear that God forgives sins if we repent, confess our sins, and turn to him in faith for his forgiveness. God is eager to forgive us if only we ask.
40 Cans of Lent Program The Knights of Columbus will have a bin in the back of the church during Lenten Season to promote the program. All donations will

Five Ways to Have a more Giving Lent
A fruitful observance of Lent involves sharing what we have and who we are with others. It is a way
to offer love the way Jesus asked to and to grow closer to God as a result. Try some of these ideas
to have amore giving Lent.
PRAY: Give God at least 15 minutes each day in dedicated prayer. Keep a journal and record your
special intentions, people you pray for, and other petitions.
SERVE: Whether it is the parish potluck, cleaning the church, or helping wit a food drive, try to do
something every day to serve others. Consider turning off the television and computer and spend
time with family or friends instead.
GIVE. Whatever you can spare will boost someone in need. Donate your gently used items to the St.
Vincent de Paul Society. Abstain from meat for an extra day or two each week and donate the
money you saved to your parish, diocese of Catholic Relief Services.
WITNESS: Invite a non-Catholic or an inactive Catholic friend to attend Mas with you. Speak up
when you are in a group and the talk turns to ideas or topics that are against Catholic teaching.
REMEMBER: Send an Easter card to someone who needs cheering, such as someone serving over-
seas in the armed forces, or people you know who are homebound.

PRESENT is the only time you have to merit Heaven and escape Hell. PAST you cannot recall, and of the FUTURE, you are not sure. Be sure to use the present well and decide daily whether you wish to be in Heaven or in Hell.
