Mass Readings, Feast Days & Intentions

Ask Father James:

Is everything in the Bible true?

All Christians believe what St. Paul said about the Bible: "all Scripture is inspired, useful for teaching, rebuking,

correcting and training in righteousness" (2 Tim. 3:16). That scripture is inspired, does it mean everything contained

in it are precisely true and to be taken literarily? Catholics believe that the Bible is inspired by God, free from error,

but should not be interpreted literally, i.e., word-for-word. For example, when we consider biblical passages like

Psalm 19:5-6 which says that the sun rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to set at the other;' such

passages are not intended to be taken literally.

This does not mean that we Catholics do not believe that everything in Scripture is inspired and inerrant; the

Catholics position has been that, the interpretation of Scripture is not a private activity, but the church's and its

interpretive voice must not be ignored. This is why magisterial authorities and commentaries come in handy.

Catholics are called to recognize that ‘what had been handed down from the apostles through the church was not

merely the biblical texts themselves, but a certain way of reading and understanding those texts.’

During the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther had challenged the Roman Church’s position of Scripture and

tradition approach that emphasizes that the historical, cultural, and theological context of Scripture within its various

genres should be taken into consideration when interpreting scriptures. The Pope had advised that with the guidance

of the church's authority (magisterium), using hermeneutics and biblical criticism genres, we are able to say that the

meaning of some texts in the Bible are not limited to that which was intended by the inspired author. Luther

disagreed, saying no human authority, including Pope or Church Council, could set itself over the testimony of

Scripture, arguing that the ultimate spiritual authority resided in "Sola Scriptura."

Today, sola scriptura model, has been adopted mostly by evangelicals. They argue and believe that the Bible is God's

word in truth...entirely unmistaken in its statements and teachings...and literarily true. They read the Bible as

literalist, believing that when scripture affirms something as true, it is true exactly and precisely as it is stated.

Catholics say the "Word," Christ himself; the Logos of the Father in whom everything has been communicated to us

was passed down in two forms - “Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition." God guided the human authors, who wrote

the Bible. It teaches the truth, but in reading it we take into account the human author’s intention and human

limitations, as well as the literary genres of the time.

If you have a faith question, please email Father James at: [email protected]
