During the next several days, all regis-
tered families who have not supported
the 2011 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal
will receive a mailing from Archbishop
Chaput. Because a successful Appeal is vital to the life of our archdiocese,
everyone is asked to participate – regardless of the
amount. As Catholics, we are called to be ambassadors
for Christ in the world. Please support the Appeal to-
day. May our Lord bless you for your sacrifice.

- I received some very positive feedback on not staying
with grass to surround our property. Here is an excerpt
from a parishioner’s letter: “Grass is a huge waste of
resources - both in its installation and especially in its
maintenance. Used for the right purpose - like a ball field - it has a great use. However, we over use it here in
the US (not so in countries where it didn't take on the "I
made it" symbolism), but it seems fitting we would be
obsessed with a non-native high maintenance plant that
we have to stunt every week by mowing so it remains in
perpetual adolescence. Bugs, mowing, disease, fungus,
drought - grass is not easy or cheap.”
- The first campout for the Knights of Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel went wonderfully well. Holy Mass, woodcraft,
cowboy songs, Shakespeare and ghost stories around the
campfire, fishing, a good hike, gun safety and shoot-
ing .22’s and 9 Mil’s (slingshots and bb’s for the
younger boys), good company with excellent fathers and
boys, good food and the beauty of the mountains; what a
blessing! Thanks be to God and Our Lady, our boys
group is off to a good start.
- I had to switch gears from being with the boys – who
managed to quickly make themselves dirty and main-
tained a high level of dirt and dust on their persons- to
working with the little girls of the parish, as the Daugh-
ters of Our Lady of Grace had their annual retreat from
Monday to Wednesday last. The subject this year was
Our Lady of Guadalupe. The mothers and volunteers
who put on the retreat were simply wonderful. I am so
proud of these good mothers, and so struck by the faith
and purity of the little girls…I know Our Lady of Gua-
dalupe was quite pleased with them. Contrast our groups
with the following: A pre-school in Sweden has decided
to stop calling children ‘him’ or ‘her’ in a bid to stop
them falling into gender stereotypes. The Egalia pre-
school, in the Sodermalm district of Stockholm, has
made the decision as part of the country efforts to engi-
neer equality between the sexes from childhood. As well
as the decision to stop using the words, the taxpayer-
funded school also carefully plans the color and place-
ment of toys and the choice of books to assure they do
not fall into stereotypes. The school opened last year and
is on a mission to break down gender roles—a core mis-
sion in the national curriculum for Swedish preschools.
The option to implement the rules is underpinned by a
theory that society gives boys an unfair edge. “Egalia
gives them a fantastic opportunity to be whoever they
want to be.” Madness. Utter lunacy. We might not be
able to do much about such things as this or the disas-
trous decision of the NY legislature to legalize homosex-
ual marriage, but we can allow boys to be boys and girls
to be girls. And more than allow…we encourage the
differences. The French had it right – Vive le difference!
- Do you suppose the shame of NY is somewhat coun-
terbalanced by the success of a number of other states in
defunding Planned Parenthood? Some states are really
doing some good in this matter: Indiana – PP defunded
by 2 million dollars, Kansas by 330K, New Jersey by 1.2
million, Wisconsin by 1 million, North Carolina by
434K, New Hampshire by 1.8 million. And Governor
Perry of Texas is expected to sign a bill that defunds PP
by 47 million. May it please God that more and more
states would defund that malevolent organization.
