Prayerful remembrance of the faithful de-parted has been an integral aspect of the Judeo-Christian faith since the second cen-tury BC. We Christians have always remem-bered the dead; their names are heard in

prayers of intercession during the liturgy and especially in the chanting of the Litany of Saints at the Easter Vigil. During the month of November we especially remember our sisters and brothers who have left this world in God’s friendship. In our Masses during the month we will remember the deceased members and loved ones of our faith commu-

nity. We welcome you to submit names for our prayerful remembrance by using the Me-morial Envelopes provided in the pews. Your offering will be used to supply the parish with reflection materials for the Advent-Christmas season.

¡A Dios lo que pertenece a Dios! Los tres domingos anteriores han mostrado a Jesús confron-tando y condenando a “los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos del pueblo.” El conflicto en el episodio de este domingo se expande para incluir a los fariseos y a los del partido de Herodes (una facción politica leal a Herodes.) El contexto del evangelio es el conflicto entre Jesús y las autori-dades, lo que conduce a la pasión y muerte de Jesus. Los jefes judíos están tramando como podrían “hacer caer a Jesús.” Ellso comienzan su ofensiva de manera sarcástica (“Maestro, sabemos que eres sincero...,”) ironicamente, es precisamente en su sarcasmo que dicen la gran verdad: en vez de alejarse de la confrontación, Jesus es muy sincero, el enfrenta el conflicto de frente. Jesús esta claro acerca de lo que es central -Dios y el reino- por eso es capaz de darle a Dios lo que pertenece a Dios: su propio ser. Discipulado nos pide nada menos que eso mismo. ¡Será que podríamos tener en nuestras vidas la claridad y deberes que Jesús presenta en el evangelio! Más, si nos eonfocamos en Jesús, eso nos trae claridad. Las autoridades judías sin duda conocen la postura del Antiguo Testamento de que hay un solo Dios a quien los judios sirven fiel-mente. La soberanía de Dios es indiscutible, todos los gobernantes son convocados por Dios para ello (la perspectiva del AT es que Dios también reina en la esfera política.) A este Dios soberano el pueblo judio ofrece gloria y honor; no hay cabida para nadie más. En contraste, el evangelio reconoce a otros soberanos y tiene una perspectiva diferente. Hay varias esferas de soberanía y gobierno. Dios es soberano y hay otros (menores que Dios)que gobiernan y a quienes el pueblo puede pagar lo que merecen. El evangelio nos muestra que nuestras lealtades no son a uno y otro, más clara-mente articula que hay diferentes esferas con conductas apropiadas a ellas. Una vez más, las autoridades judías echan de menos la percep-ción clara que Jesús tiene de si mismo y de su misión. La respuesta de Jesús pone las cosas en perspectiva; Cuando Dios es ver-daderamente el centro de nuestras vidas, no hay problema en darle a otros lo que les corresponde. El darle a otros lo que les corre-sponde no compromete el hecho de que Dios es el centro de nues-tras vidas. Jesús nos enseña que servir a Dios se expresa mejor cuando conocemos claramente la relación entre Dios y las otras autoridades en nuestras vidas. La autoridad civil hasta se puede usar para fomentar la labor de Dios, como en el caso de Ciro el persa que liberó a los judios del cautiverio de Babilonia. La autori-dad civil no tiene la palabra final sobre el pueblo, nuestras obliga-ciones son primeramente a Dios y luego a Cesar.

To God what belongs to God! The past three Sundays have shown Jesus confronting and condemning the “the chief priests and elders of the people.” The conflict in this Sunday’s episode expands to include the Phari-sees and the Herodians (a political faction loyal to the House of Herod.) The context for this gospel is the escalating conflict between Jesus and the authorities, which leads to Jesus’ passion and death. The leading Jews are overtly plotting how they might “entrap Jesus in speech.” They begin their offensive rather sar-castically (“teacher, we know that you are a truthful man...,”) ironi-cally, it is precisely in their sarcasm that they speak the greatest truth: instead of shying away from the confrontation or defusing it, Jesus is firmly truthful; he addresses the conflict head on. He has clarity about what is central -God and the kingdom- and so he is able to give to God what belongs to God: his very self. Disciple-ship requires of us nothing less. Would that we have the clarity about our life and duties as Jesus portrays in the gospel! Yet, if we keep our focus on Jesus, this does bring a clarity to us. The Jewish authorities are no doubt quite aware of the Old Testament stance that there is only one God whom faithful Jews serve. God’s sovereignty is uncontested; all rulers govern be-cause they are summoned by God to do so (the OT perspective is that God also rules in the political sphere.) To this one sover-eign Lord the Jewish people give glory and honor. There isn’t any room for anyone else. In contrast, the gospel recognizes other rulers and has a different perspective. There are different spheres of rule. God is sovereign but there are others (less than God) who rule and to whom the people can pay them their due. The gospel shows us that our loyalties are not either/or, but it clearly articu-lates that there are different spheres with appropriate behaviour belonging to each. Again, the Jewish authorities miscalculate Jesus’ clear per-ception of himself and his mission. Jesus’ answer puts things into perspective. When God is truly the center of our lives, there is no problem with giving others their due. Conversely, giving others their due doesn’t necessarily compromise God as the center of our lives. Jesus shows that serving the one God is even better expressed when we know clearly the relationship between God and other authorities in our lives. Civil authority can even be used to further God’s work , as in the case of Cyrus the Persian who liberates the Jews from Babylonian captivity. But civil authority does not have an ultimate claim on people, our obligations are owed primarily to God and secondarily to Cesar.

Activities for the family this week Take these activities as ways to further reflect on the Sunday read-ings: Have a family discussion about Church values and teachings, and civil values and teachings. What social injustices in our society can be addressed through political involvement? How can our family speak out on issues of violence, abortion, capital punishment, wel-fare, euthanasia, poverty? Watch the evening news or read the newspaper together as a family. Choose one issue to discuss each day. What is a Christian response to the issue? What is the best way to work for the com-mon good? As a family, include the issue in your daily prayer. Discuss the phrase, "give to God what is God's." What belongs to God? How can your family show respect for God and all God's creation? Stewardship by the Bible OCTOBER 16TH TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY

Each year at tax time, we conscientiously give “to Caesar

what belongs to Caesar.” Does my stewardship indicate that

I am as faithful about giving “to God what belongs to God”?

As with all things pertaining to the gospel, stewardship is fundamentally the work of the spirit in our lives. Discipleship requires the surrender of ourselves through grace and choice to Jesus Christ: “Mature disciples

make a conscious, firm decision, carried out in action, to be followers of Jesus Christ no matter the cost to themselves.”

THE ROAD TAKEN

The folklore of all cultures is filled with stories

of fateful choices. People find themselves in front of

two doors—one door leading to disaster, one to untold

bliss. Robert Frost’s famous poem “The Road Not

Taken” underscores the fact that our lives are forever

changed by the choices we make. Week after week, we

are offered a choice to declare to others and to our God

whom we belong to—the small god of money and pos-

sessions, or the great God whom Jesus called Abba

(Jesus spoke Aramaic, and this word means Daddy or

Papa). On Sunday some of us simply drop into the offer-

tory basket what we think is good enough, or perhaps a

habitual amount that we will never miss, or what we just

happen to have in our pocket. How about a different

approach? Whenever we receive a financial blessing,

whether from a weekly paycheck, a personal allowance,

an appreciation of investments, a sales bonus, or even a

lottery windfall, first and foremost let’s thank God for

this blessing. Then take a portion—the amount is up to

us—and share it gratefully with others: half to build up

the Church, and the other half to good causes you favor.

This places God as the highest priority in our lives. In

gratitude for God’s overwhelming love for us, we give

back a portion of what we have received, and only then

keep the rest for ourselves. The scriptures challenge us

to give this “first fruits,” not the tiny part that’s left over

after we’ve done what we want. Modern scientific re-

search shows that people who give generously tend to

live happier and longer lives. So becoming a grateful

giver changes how we think about life, and makes us

EL CAMINO QUE TOMEMOS

La trayectoria de todas las culturas está llena de histo-rias con decisiones fatídicas. La gente muchas veces se encuen-

tra frente a dos puertas, una lleva al desastre, la otra a una dicha

incalculable. El famoso poema de Robert Frost “The Road Not

Taken” (El Camino no Tomado) subraya el hecho de que nues-

tras decisiones cambian para siempre el curso de nuestra vida.

Semana tras semana se nos brinda la oportunidad de declarar a

quién pertenecemos, al dios minúsculo del dinero y las posesio-

nes o al gran Dios a quien Jesús llamó Abba, que en arameo (el

idioma de Jesús) quiere decir papá o papaíto. El domingo algu-

nos de nosotros ponemos en la colecta aquello que pensamos es

lo suficiente o tal vez una cantidad habitual que nunca echare-mos de menos, o si no, el cambio que tengamos en el bolsillo en

ese momento. ¿Y si enfocáramos esto desde otro ángulo? Cuan-

do recibimos un beneficio financiero, ya sea por el sueldo, por

algún subsidio personal, por el rendimiento de una inversión,

algún tipo de bono o aun la ganancia inesperada en la lotería,

hemos de dar gracias en primer lugar a Dios por tal bendición.

Después debemos sacar una porción (la cantidad es decisión

nuestra) y compartirla agradecidamente con los demás; una mi-

tad para construir la Iglesia y la otra para alguna causa buena de

nuestra predilección. Esta actitud pone a Dios como la mayor

prioridad de nuestra vida. En gratitud por el inmenso amor que

Dios nos tiene debemos primero devolver una porción de lo que hemos recibido antes de quedarnos con el resto. Las Escrituras

nos desafían a dar de los “primeros frutos” y no de la parte míni-

ma que nos sobra después de hacer lo que hemos querido. Las

investigaciones científicas modernas demuestran que las perso-

nas que dan generosamente tienden a vivir más tiempo y más

felices. Además, dar con gratitud cambia nuestra manera de pen-

“In the Beginning…” 30th Week

Chris has doubled in size over the last 4 weeks and is getting cramped in the womb. I don’t have as much room to do my exercises! My mus-cle tone is getting much better and my body is filling out with baby fat. Hair is growing on my head—nice fine hair. I can recognize mom’s voice. The third trimester is filled with aches and pains and general discomfort for Mother, but she knows that soon she will see her baby.

ABRIGO PARA EL INVIERNO

Una escuela primaria local nos ha pedido ayudarles en sus esfuerzos para asegurarse que ningún niño carezca de un abrigo de invierno para mantenerlos abrigados y bien. Han pedido ¡sólo cha-quetas pesadas! No necesitan chaquetas ligeras u otra ropa de invierno. Necesitan específicamente abri-gos tallas 5 a 16. Los mismos pueden ser ligeramente usados o nuevos. Habrá una mesa en el Salón Parroquial para recoger

los abrigos los fines de semana del 22 y 23 de octubre y del 29 y 30 de octubre. Cualquier pregunta, por favor llame a Jim o Shelia al 678-454-1161. Gracias por su apoyo al proveer abrigos para los niños necesitados .

WARMTH FOR THE WINTER

We have been asked by a local elementary school to help them in their effort to make sure

none of the children are without a winter coat to keep them warm and well. They have asked for heavy winter coats only! They are not in need of light jackets or other winter clothing. They have specifically asked for sizes 5 to 16. The coats may be gently used or new. A table will be set up in the Parish Hall to collect the coats the weekends of October 22nd & 23rd and Octo-ber 29th & 30th. If you have questions please call Jim or Shelia at 678-454-1161. We thank you for your support in providing coats for children in need.

United with the Catholics of the world at the Table of the Lord, we recommit ourselves to our vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries. Our offerings will support the work and witness of those who selflessly give up all for the sake of our Lord and His Gospel — the local priests, Religious, and lay catechists who daily provide loving service to the poor and suffering. Please be extra gener-ous as this collection will be divided between three very important needs. Thank you.
