We are now into the month of May. Throughout most of the northern hemisphere of the world, May is considered one of the most beautiful months of the year as it signals the blooming of spring and the bursting forth of life. Being under this isolation directive and social distancing, many people have slowed down their pace of life. Maybe it’s because the gyms and health clubs are closed, but I have never seen so many people out walking and running, especially up and down Alta Drive. People seem to actually notice one another more and share a smile and say “hi”. I’ve even heard comments how people have been more in tune with nature and have noticed the birds singing and the flowers blooming. So, there can be an upside to things, when we begin to take notice. Or as they say, “every cloud has a silver lining”. It is in this lovely setting of warmth and flowers in the month of May that the Church honors the Blessed Mother. Through the centuries, the Popes have recommended honoring Mary during the month of May. The Litany of Loreto, one of the most widely used prayers in honor of Mary throughout the world, was wholeheartedly recommended by Pope Clement VII and approved by Pope Sixtus V back in in 1587. In his great Encyclical on the Sacred Liturgy, Mediator Dei, Pope Pius XII characterized devotion to Mary as being of great piety and dignity. In 1965, Pope Paul VI promoted May devotions to Mary as a means of offering prayers for peace. St. Pope John Paul II dedicated his entire papacy to the Mother of God. Even our own Bishop George Leo Thomas has a very deep devotion and respect for Mary. He has even told us that whenever you see the “M” on the McDonald’s sign, that you think of Mary and say a “Hail Mary” prayer for him. Mary has unfortunately been a controversial figure throughout Christianity. Protestants and Evangelical Christians say we Catholics place too much emphasis on Mary. What they fail to understand, however, is that in honoring Mary, we are imitating Jesus and His own love for His mother, and honoring His last will and testament before He died on the cross, when Jesus gave Mary to all of us as our mother. Mary is not God, but she is the “Mother of God.” The Council of Ephesus, held in 431 AD, was of decisive importance in clarifying this. During that Council, to the great joy of Christians, the truth of the divine motherhood of Mary was solemnly confirmed as a truth of the Church's faith. Mary is the Mother of God (TheotĂłkos), since by the power of the Holy Spirit she conceived in her virginal womb and brought into the world Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is of one being with the Father. "The Son of God...born of the Virgin Mary...has truly been made one of us," has been made man through the Incarnation. Mary is also our great advocate and intercessor. At the wedding feast in Cana, Mary asked her Son to intervene when the wine ran out. Even though it was not yet His time, and not even in the scope of His mission, because of His mother’s request, Jesus changed water into wine, showing His love for His mother, his compassion for people, and His understanding of our life situations. So, yes, Mary is our mother, and a very strong advocate on our behalf. As we continue to deal with this epidemic, we are all asked to come to Mary, especially this month, to ask for her intercession. With this in mind, let me suggest the “Memorare” prayer that we might pray it each day: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus,
I believe that You are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and
unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen. https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/devotions/act-of-spiritual-communion-339

Bishop George Leo Thomas has extended the Diocesan Discontinuance Order through May 31. The obligation to attend Mass continues to be dispensed by the Bishop. The church, school and offices remain closed to the public. May we remain close to one another in prayer and in mutual love and caring. We pray that the Lord will be close to us and give us all that we need to come out on the other side of this present crisis as an even stronger and more zealous church.
