A Note From The Pastor… I hope you all enjoyed a very Happy Easter

with family and friends. Our celebra#ons

were so solemn and special: Thanks to all

who helped by enhancing our liturgies: the

Musicians, Choir, Art and Environment Team,

Ushers, Sacristans, and the other Liturgical

Ministers—I am so grateful to all of you!

Special thanks also to the Legion of Mary for

so faithfully passing out the Parish Gi&

(books) to families each year.

Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of

Easter. On April 30, 2000, when he canonized St. Faus#na, Pope St. John Paul II solemnly declared

this Sunday “Divine Mercy Sunday”. St. John Paul described this day with these words: “In a special

way, it is the Sunday of thanksgiving for all the goodness that God has shown us in the whole Easter

mystery.”

This Sunday, April 8th, we will have a Holy Hour from 3PM un#l 4PM in the Church. I will hear

confessions beginning at 3PM. Please note that I will be the only priest available for Confessions on

that day/#me at OLH. Because of this, now would be a good #me to men#on one of the Church’s

guidelines from the Code of Canon Law regarding going to Confession, especially whenever there are

long lines with people wai#ng to have their confessions heard. When going to Confession, one is

only required to confess grave [mortal] sins, along with the number of #mes that sin was commi"ed.

While confession of venial sins is recommended, it is not required. So, Confession is not #me for

spiritual direc#on. Also, please avoid giving unnecessary details: Just state the sin or sins, and, for

serious sins, the number of #mes the sin was commi"ed. Please consider a"ending this Holy Hour.

The Lord Jesus promised St. Faus#na great graces to those who go to Confession [as close to the

Feast as possible, or within one week] and receive Holy Communion on this day.

We will also have the Image of Divine Mercy at the Holy Hour. It will be blessed beforehand, and

an opportunity will be given for people to venerate it a&erwards, as our Lord had asked St. Faus#na.

Great Mercy is available for those who approach and venerate the Image with trust in Jesus’ Mercy.

A reminder that the Parish Pastoral Council and the Evangeliza#on Commi"ee both have asked

that we con#nue to observe silence ten minutes before Mass begins so as to promote a greater

sense of reverence.

Please come to a short, informa#ve, eye-opening video concerning Margaret Sanger, the woman

who made birth control popular in America, and founded Planned Parenthood, the na#on’s largest

abor#on provider. The video will be shown during Religious Educa#on Classes to the parents and all

other interested persons next Sunday, April 15th, at 10:30AM, and again on Monday, April 16th, at

6:30PM in the School Library.

I wish you all con#nued Easter Blessings.

God Bless,

Fr. Paul

Scrip Program Update

Thank you to all who have par#cipated in our Scrip Program over the years at OLH. There has always been a

small, but loyal following of people buying Scrip, and working for the program.

A&er much careful thought and considera#on, we have made the decision to end the Scrip Program in April.

We are excited to rethink some of our fundraising programs going forward, and are looking forward to welcoming

some new and different things in the future.

The last Scrip order will be placed on April 16th at 12 Noon. Get any last minute orders in before then to make

sure you receive your tui#on credit on the May FACTS payments.

We are grateful for all you have done in the past to help support our School. A huge thank you to the

parishioners and parents who have supported the program.

OLH Is Crea!ng A Parish Directory!

Adver!sing Opportunity

We have contracted Guide Book Publishing (GBP) to publish a Guide Book & Directory for our Parish that

will be updated and delivered directly to your homes annually. This book will be the Who, What, Where,

When, and How of our Church. The book is being provided at no cost to our Church. Local businesses are

being solicited to adver#se in the book. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about

adver#sing in our book, please call our office at (847) 872-8778 by Thursday, April 19th.

Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide

Book & Directory adver#ser over a non-adver#ser. It “will pay” to adver#se in our new Guide Book & Directory.

** Update Membership Informa!on **

Does our Church data base have your family membership record correct? Here is your chance to update your

record for our annual Guide Book & Directory (if you haven’t already done so).

It is #me for us to update our data base with any changes, addi#ons, or dele#ons that may have occurred in your

family over the past year.

Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your

children s"ll at home, and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want your record published?

If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please let us know now so

that the informa#on in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. If you need to update your informa!on, or do not

want your record published, please fill out the forms on the tables at the main entrances of the Church, and

place it in the collec!on basket, or drop it off at the Parish Office.

Thank you for your help!

Ask A Priest

Over the last few months, I have received a number of ques#ons that have asked about sin, but in a

very specific sense (“Is X a sin? What about Y?”). In order to address these ques#ons, both now and in

the future, I think it’s necessary to write a more generalized ar#cle on sin, so that we can understand

what it is, what its effects are in our lives, and how we can combat it moving forward. Disclaimer: I only

have 800 words to a"empt to answer a ques#on that deserves several chapters in a moral theology textbook; please

bear with my oversimplifica#ons.

*******

Our first task is to differen#ate between Sin and Evil. Although these words are o&en used interchangeably, they

actually reference two dis#nct reali#es. Evil is objec!ve, while Sin is subjec!ve. We can therefore evaluate ac#ons

performed as morally good or evil (or neutral), but it is only the person performing an ac#on (and God, of course) who

can determine if said ac#on was a sin. More on this later!

Our second task is to examine the origins of evil and sin, and to remove the culpability of God! As we review

Genesis 1-2, we are reminded that God created everything, and that He created everything good. One might be

tempted to make the syllogism: if God created everything that exists, and evil exists, then God therefore created evil.

This logic has one fatal flaw, however. Evil does not really exist; it is the priva#on of the good. Much like darkness is

the absence of light, or an empty bank account is the absence of money; evil is a movement against the good. But just

like we experience the effects of darkness, and an empty bank account, the priva#on of goodness can be felt in a very

real and tangible way.

Sin, as well, can be mistakenly a"ributed to God. A&er all, God is the one who created us with Free Will, and

therefore, He is the one that gave us the capability to make free decisions that violate His moral impera#ves. Free Will,

however, is not our capacity to choose between right and wrong. Rather, it is the God-given capacity for us to choose

for God! When someone inten#onally chooses evil, this is an abuse of Free Will. Commi\ng sin does not make us

masters of our own domain, it actually makes us slaves of our passions and brokenness.

I men#oned earlier that sin is a subjec#ve reality, known only by the sinner and God. So what makes something a

sin? There are three requirements for an evil ac#on to be classified as a sin.

1. It has to be a morally evil ac#on.

2. I have to know it is morally evil.

3. I have to freely choose to do it anyway.

For example; think of someone missing Mass on Sunday. 1. Is this a morally evil ac"on? Yes! The Third

Commandment tells us to keep holy the Sabbath day, and the Church has always s#pulated that every bap#zed Catholic

is required to a"end Sunday Mass. 2. Do I know that it is morally evil? Well, this is where it gets subjec#ve. It is

shocking to me how few people actually know the gravity of missing Mass. So many have been taught from an early

age that Mass a"endance is op#onal, or only for the ‘important’ days. If my reader was unaware of this requirement,

then she did not commit a sin by missing Mass in the past. Of course, now she knows that it is morally evil, so going

forward, she has to a%end! 3. Did I freely choose to miss Mass? Some#mes, because of travel or illness or unwilling

parents, people are, through no fault of their own, unable to get to Mass. If you did not inten#onally choose to skip

Mass, then you have not commi"ed a sin. ‘What about X? What about Y?’ I can give you my opinions on these things,

I can tell you whether or not they are objec#vely evil (which IS the job of Holy Mother Church, by the way), but the only

people who know for certain if a person has sinned is the sinner himself, and God.

Very briefly; there are two types of sin – Mortal and Venial. Venial sins are the smaller, everyday sorts of sins that

we fall into throughout our life. Although they damage our rela#onship with God, they do not destroy it completely.

Venial sins can be healed through the Sacrament of Eucharist, as well as the Sacrament of Penance. Mortal sins are the

big sins, usually a viola#on of one of the 10 Commandments. If I commit a mortal sin, I cut myself off from the life of

grace completely; if one was to die in the state of mortal sin, one would not be able to go to Heaven. If you are in a

state of mortal sin, get to Confession as soon as possible!

We will of course con#nue this conversa#on as we start to answer other ques#ons, but I am glad to have wri"en

(finally!) an ar#cle about sin.

Peace,

Fr. Mike

RCIA is ready to take our summer break. Classes for this year have just finished.

The RCIA Team: Arturo Bahena, Abba Range, Rich and Marcia Marek, Kim Whiteside,

Gaston Placa, Aus!n Mink, Deacon Marcelino and Brenda Hernandez, and Gerard

and Kelly Metoyer, want to thank Our Lady of Humility Church Family for your

support and prayers throughout the year for our Candidates. You have been an

of the Candidates being an inspira#on of commitment to us throughout the year.

Special thanks to you who sent le"ers and cards of welcome to our Neophytes – Church language for new

Catholics :) – at the Easter Vigil. They were very much appreciated.

Our Sponsors, Barb Brooker, Gaston Placa, Cheryl Mi-en, Deacon Marcelino, and Brenda Hernandez, deserve our

special acknowledgment this year. They accompanied their Candidates each week, and at all of the Rites and

celebra#ons throughout the year, giving welcome, support, affirma#on, and witness to their faith.

Sundays were special days for RCIA when the group was sent forth a&er the homily at each Mass to further dwell

on the Scripture readings for the day, and what it meant in our daily lives. The Team and Sponsors took a turn or

two facilita#ng these “Break Open the Word” sessions a&er the homily of weekly Masses.

In addi#on to the Team, Bonnie Tipton, Ryan Krueger, Jack and Arden Robinson, Deacon Mike Mercure, Pete

Owen, Deacon Jim Askew, and Fr. Paul, and all those who voluntarily shared their personal tes!mony, were guest

presenters throughout the year. Thank you, one and all, for sharing the fruits of your love, faith, experience,

tes#mony, and exper#se.

Tremendous thanks to Fr. Paul for his frequent presence and full support to the Team. We appreciate everything

you have done to help us.

May none of us ever forget the precious prayer of our Lord and Savior Jesus as He prayed for all believers.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message,

that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in us so

that the world may believe that You have sent Me. I have given them the glory that You gave Me, that

they may be one as we are one. I in them and You in Me. May they be brought to complete unity to let

the world know that You sent Me, and have loved them even as You have loved Me.” –John 17:20-23

Over the next few weeks in April, we will have an RCIA Spotlight. We will introduce you to our new Catholics and

our RCIA Candidates who are con#nuing on their journey to come into the full communion of the Catholic Church.

This week we would like you to meet Yuri and Veronica:

My name is Yuri Ruiz. I was raised Catholic and bap#zed at 6 months old. I religiously a"ended Most Blessed

Trinity in Waukegan for 8 years, and in August of 2016, I decided to join OLH. I am married and have a 9 year old son

named Jaiden who is preparing for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion, also at OLH. I am energe#cally engaged

in suppor#ng the well-being and future of my two youngest siblings Rafael and Carlos.

I am an Assistant Branch Manager at a Staffing Firm in Waukegan. I enjoy placing good talented people, and

matching them with great companies. I have an extensive customer service background, and have many years of

management experience. Companies heavily rely on my exper#se to find great talent. God is working through me

when I give people hope, and an opportunity for a new career.

In my spare #me, I cheer for my son at soccer games. I LOVE to travel, and spend quality #me with my family and

friends, preferably over good food and wine. :)

My name is Veronica Vargas! I was born in Chalco, Mexico. I came to the United States when I was 4 years old.

I was bap#zed when I was about 8 months old. I love to travel! I also enjoy spending #me with my nieces and

nephews! Growing up my family would occasionally go to church. As I got older, I explored other churches including

a Lutheran Church, a Non-Denomina#onal Church, and even a Bap#st Church, but I always found myself back at a

Catholic Church. I decided to join RICA not only to get my last 2 Sacraments, but to understand my faith. Being part

of RCIA by far changed my life! I found a new loving, caring group of people. I feel confident to ask all the ques#ons

I have. I feel welcomed and loved by everyone at RCIA. Since joining RCIA, I feel closer to God, and have a deeper

understanding of my faith!

The Our Lady of Humility Teen Ministry a"ended Paul Apostle of Christ on Palm Sunday. It was the story of Paul’s

final days in prison, and Luke’s urgent mission to record Paul’s ministry in the Acts of the Apostles. The story is

powerful, and it was beau#fully filmed. We hope that every parishioner gets to see this movie.

******************************************************************************* The Teens volunteered at Save My Starving Children on March 3rd, 2018 at their Libertyville loca#on. The workers

on their shi& packed 59,400 meals for kids in impoverished countries.

******************************************************************************* In February, the Teens decorated cookies for the Soup Kitchen on a Sunday evening, and then volunteered at the

Soup Kitchen on Thursday of that week. They worked in the serving line, and even got to distribute their own cookies.
